Kinder Gentler report on the Meade PST repair
      #2711275 - 10/21/08 08:26 PM

I got the PST back again from Meade on Monday. I took it out to the outreach today and the focuser has the exact same image shift as both times before.

They are sending me a new case, stand and an 18mm CEMAX eyepiece for my trouble.

The VP says that all PST's have image shift in the focuser mechanism and that mine is "within tolerances".

Does anyone else with a PST get an image shift when they turn their focuser? My other PST does not.

Not sure what you mean by image shift...

If you are saying the image moves side to side (or up and down) as you focus then my PST has none. I have my pentaprism aligned perfectly square to the optical train and there is no play in the focus mechanism.

With an 18mm CEMAX eyepice in my PST I get a shake back andd forth of the solar image by about half the solar diameter whenever I turn the focus knob.

Colin when you say you have it aligned perfectly, is this something you did. Because when I looked in there, there was a screw attached to a black plastic part that fit in a slot onthe inside of the black box. There was a pentaprism glued to the black plastic part. the black box cover held it in place.
I saw no adjustable parts except for spring tension.

I believe I get a minor amount of image shift. I'll pay more attention next time I take it out. Some of it could be the way I position the mount for quick looks.

Only image shift I ever saw on my PSTs was due to a sloppy mount (photo tripod). On a nice solid mount (LXD75) there was zero shift.

WOW... now thats a good one! image shift. I bet they spent over 10,000 in meetings trying to come up with excuses to cover their butts on the craftsmanship that goes into repairing them.
I think with all the problems they have had with repairs... replacing them would be the way to go. I mean... really. If it takes a week to a month to actually repair the darn things. The payroll alone is not worth it!! Figure in health care and unemployment costs, then workers comp fee's... heck. They could send you 2 new scopes for the cost spent on repairing ONE scope!
Just my opinion... AGAIN...

Image shift.... Get the @#$% outa here ya bums! there aint no such thing on a PST. IMO....
In fact, every PST I have looked through has NO image sfift at all. I have looked through more than 20 of them.
They tride to bribe you with goodies to get you to shut up on their goof up. I personally would keep the goodies, send the scope back, and say it is NOT RIGHT. I would sacrifice the use of my scope to get it right. eventually they will realize they cannot fix it, and just give you a new scope... I bet...

If you have image shift, it is most likely it is coming from the prism getting hung up it the track and tilting back and fourth. I have none in mine. Since we can discuss opening and looking into the system, then I would watch the prism has you turn the focusing knob. It should move smoothly up and down the track and both 90 degree faces of the prism should stay exactly parallel to the sides of the metal housing were the telescope screws in and then eyepiece tube is mounted. Turn the focuser so the prism is at the top of it's travel. In that position the top face of the prism should be exactly parallel to the inside top face of the black metal housing. If not your prism is misaligned. Also there is piece of friction material mounted to the side of the prism that contacts the inside face of the cover. Besure that is positioned so it is mounted flat on the side of prism. Too much friction between the cover and the friction material can be causing the prism to rock as it is being focused.

Here is link to the patent for how the penta prism focuser works http://www.designerinlight.com/solar/solarpatents/07248405.pdf
Note in the drawings how the top and left side of the penta prism are exactly 90.0 degrees to the light path. If your prism is tilted and not like the drawing in the patent then it is misaligned. If it is rocking back and forth and not staying exactly 90.0 degrees to the entering and exiting light path, this will cause image shift.

Exactly my thinking.

I am trying to keep this from a Meade bashing post at the urging of the moderators.
