I haven't gotten much this year besides some used Naglers but Sky Safari Pro with iPad has opened up a whole new world. The Argo navis library is good but Sky Safari pro gives you so much more and it works flawlessly with my ServoCat gen 3 after gary made a modifocation to accept the serial connection. LUV it!!!

My submission would be the Cambridge Double Star Atlas. It has Tirion drawn maps that show thousands of double stars and all the NGC, IC and M catalogues. Also a very delightful history section on the history of double star observing. The very best all around sky atlas IMO. A definite keeper.

Also, BackYard EOS is fantastic!

Another Vote for Sky Safari but in my case it would be for the Android OS. It was released the day before Christmas and it is the first really serious astronomy app for the Android OS.

I see lots of votes for the ES 82 degree eyepieces, were they released in 2011 or did the price just become affordable in 2011? Looking back through the ads on Astromart, I see ES 82 degree eyepieces being sold used in 2009.

It was a combination of a redesign and lower prices. They met the magical price point....

Hi Tom,
I only just noticed this thread - sorry

Couple of questions before I can consider what my suggestions would be: -

1] Is see that this is a poll - so is this just a simple count of how many times a product gets mentioned by responders?

2] I see responders submitting Explore Scientific 82 Series eyepieces, but weren't these released during the previous year? Or, does the actual year of release not matter?

A comment I have is that it would be useful to know why a product is being submitted as "Product of the year" by someone.

Regards,

skybsd

I know Nebulosity has been around, but so have a number of other products that have been nominated.

So I propose Nebulosity-3.x.

Release 3 was made available last year. It fills the niche in the affordable but excellent category. Nebulosity+PHD is hard to beat without shelling out four to five large ones.

ES 9mm 120 degree eyepiece.
too bad there are so few out there (only 4 I know of, one was a return). This eyepiece really has an apparent field of about 140 degrees, and stars are pinpoint from the center to the edge of the field; Jupiter at the edge is white, but otherwise looks exactly like it does in the center, with the same bands visible. I'd actually call it the Product of the Decade, not just Product of the Year.

Clears,

Telegizmo 365
For me,without question, this has been the most usefull product I've bought in years.Injuries of thirty years ago have come back to bite me big time and I felt that my latter years would have me tied to lesser mounts and lighter scopes (ex,c8 on a cg5).Now I have a c11 parked on a g11 in the backyard.Set up once and thats it.I keep it covered with the 365 and so far,so good.A really outstanding product that greatly increases my time at the eyepiece.

Istar achromat objectives....used a pair to build these 5 inch f/5.5 binoculars. Excellent quality lens at a fair price.

Well, I suppose if you wanted to vote for anything that will only be released in 2013, you must be clairvoyant.

I was referring to the fact that this thread was started on 12/01/11. The original poster never tallied up the vote for 2012 and now we're into 2013.

We are barely into 2013; this was for the year 2012. It's only been 4 days (not counting today), since the vote ended officially. Tom T will tally the votes & post the results when time allows. Don't forget, Administrators & Moderators not only donate their time here, but also have their real lives & jobs to contend with.

Carol, I think you're mistaken on this. The candidates for product of the year were for the products that came out in the year 2011, not 2012, that according to the precedent that he [the original poster] set the year before. If you look you'll find a product of the year for 2010 that we voted on during the first few months of 2011. Hence the product of the year for 2011 began one month before 2012. It should have ended around March 2012 for the winners of 2011. Instead it's gone over a year.......

I hope I'm not too confusing on the post.....

Got me confused...

Well, if this is for 2011, here's my new vote.

6 inch f/5 Istar achromat objective used to build Box refractor (the inspiration for the BoxBinos)

Yep; I believe you are correct! I went back to the original post, and it was dated 12/01/11; so couldn't be for the year 2012. I think this was simply an oversight, and the results never got posted.

Would be nice to see "Customer Service" as a product. I think companies like the site sponsor and others should be acknowledged, products can be great - but made better by those who stand behind and support them.

My customer support product of the year awards go to TEC, SBIG, iOptron, Agena Astro, Starizona, Astronomics - in no particular order.

This sticky thread is getting a little dated.

I don't remember for 2011.
2012, with no hesitation, I would say SkyFi and sky safari.
In 2013, I would vote for Celestrons plate solving auto calibration StarSense accessory, though as it still has a few software bugs, maybe should hold off until 2014

Juice-lid vibration suppression pads for the 2012-13 contest. The APM 6" ED lens has my vote for the 2014 version.

Looking forward to next years contest already....the suspense is unbearable!
