Pelican 1600 Case
      #5619719 - 01/12/13 07:40 PM

Anyone have a Pelican 1600 case. I was looking to get a good eyepiece case. Looks like it will hold quite a bit. Any feedback is appreciated. Was looking at this one below.

I have 2 #1600 Pelicans. I use one for my EP etc. and the other was used for my CGEM mount.

Look at this site to compare prices.

I ordered a 1654 I ordered from them. The cases are big, but protect the stuff in them, very well.

I use the Pelican 1550 for an eyepiece case and it is plenty big enough. It's a fairly heavy case when it's loaded with eyepieces. I personally would go with two smaller cases rather than a case bigger than the 1550 if the 1550 isn't big enough.

Interesting info. I have a few 2 inch eyepieces on large q70 38 mm which is 6 inches long. I see what you mean it is a very large case. Maybe smaller is the way to go. Thanks for your advice all.

I also found the 1600 a bit too big and heavy for just eyepieces, but works great as a case for my DM-6 and mount accessories.
I did settle for the smaller Nanuk 930 with adjustable padded dividers which has worked out well for my eyepieces.

I have a plano case that is awesome. Bigger than a pelican 1510 for a little less.

I love it. 4 latches, waterproof, deep.

Might be worth checking it out, or looking at one of its little brothers.

I've had the 1600 for about 10 years and it's a fantastic case. It is large, and I'm actually considering transferring my Stowaway and all it's accessories to that case, and getting some smaller Pelican cases to hold different EP sets.

No matter how you use it, any Pelican case will serve you well.

The 1600 is huge, but it holds a lot and is great protection. I added a couple of eyepieces and had to jump up from a 1550. I prefer to have my eyepieces laying flat hence the need for a large case.

You could reuse the foam and reorganize, but it would require a little spray glue of some kind. When the foam is plucked it's plucked.
I have 21 Pelican cases of all sizes and I color coordinate to come extent. Yellow for eyepieces, tan for ADM accessories, green for my tents, orange for tools, but mostly black because most large cases are only available in black. Color cases make things a little easier to find in the dark.
I also use Pelican cases for my hand guns, the 1170 is a perfect fit for most.

Paul, nicely organized case! I have my eyepieces in a 1600 case too. Do you go down to the second level of foam when you pluck? I organize them vertically to fit more into the case. I'm wondering I there's another case that you can lay the eyepieces flat, but its not as deep as the 1600.

The 1600 has two layers of pick-n-pluck foam, plus a thinner solid bottom layer, so what I've done is switch out the layers. I put the old picked-out layer on the bottom, the thinner solid layer in the middle which will now act as a good base, and the "non-picked" layer on top. This will probably only work if you lay down the eyepieces in the case like I do, but it does give you at least one more re-organization before needing replacement foam.

Well after some thought I bought a Flashpoint 1550 from Adorama for $59.95 with free shipping. I have a small Orion eyepiece case now and it has held up well. I am pretty easy on my equipment so I think this will work fine and half the price.

I appreciate all the advice. I will be sure to post a picture and thoughts of the cases.

I think I'll give one of the smaller cases a shot. I don't travel to dark skies nearly as much these days, & I'm sure it will do the job I need for storage and moving to the backyard. Even if I decide I like Pelican better, I won't lose anything by having one of these. If I decide these are more than adequate for the job, then the savings can be put towards eyepieces!

Ken, thanks so much for the pictures. A picture is worth a 1000 words as they say. I was thinking of one too, but would like to put my huge and long EPs in there standing up, not laying down. Do you think thats possible? I see your Q70 is laying down.....
But then again, if they're half the price, I could get 2 if I need more room. BTW, where's it made?
Thanks

How "deep" is the lid on the flashpoint 1550? Been looking at cases and some have 2-3 inches of foam on the lid, that extra inch or two would be better for me if it was in the bottom.

you guys who are comparing the interior and exterior dimensions of the Pelican vs Adorama cases on the Adorama page, should go to the Pelican site and see that Pelican has different dimensions there. Not much, but definitely different; mostly larger

I'll try to answer both questions. The lid is about 1 1/2 inches deep with foam. As for the Q70 I didn't think it would fit standing up. So I ended up laying it down. As you can see I don't have a ton of eyepieces so I wasn't worried about running out of space. It think it would be really tight though with the Q70 38mm maybe its smaller brothers could stand up,

Hope that clears it up

Ken

Yes I am. I joined in like Sept. of last year but soon after bought a 8SE and been picking up gear along the way. So haven't been able to put the extra gas in the truck to get out to a meeting since, it's a hog . I'm actually located in Mountain Top.

No need to bring it I was just curios, I'll be out of town so can't make it to the Feb 5th meeting anyway. I'm putting gear purchases on hold until my starsense arrives but will be looking at similar cases for later this year.

Jim,
They seem really tight. It says it actually has a water purge option and it floats. It seems to be very well built. I have bought several things from Adorama over the years and they have been very good to deal with.

Thanks Gabe. I didn't have to go into the second layer, so what I did was buy a piece of regular 2 1/2" charcoal foam and saved the pick and pluck for any future mods.
I did have a 1550 which worked great , but wouldn't allow me to fit all my stuff in once I bought the 21E and the 4.5 Delos.
