Online Retailer Question - This Cannot Be
      #5910493 - 06/08/13 10:00 PM

I stumbled into something that surely falls into the 'WAY too good to be true' category. It is stuff at www.sale-telescopes.com. Here are some examples.

Losmandy G11 mount WITH GEMINI II for $1917 (typical pricing more like $3k).

Televue TV-85 Apo (green or ivory) $1453 (typical pricing more like $2395)

Astro-Tech AT111EDT F7 EDT for $957 (typical pricing $1595)

This is just too good to be true. They do seem to be located in Indonesia for starters, BTW. So who knows how shipping really works. But does anyone have experience with these guys?

Thanks.

dave

Dave:

It is too good to be true. They claim to have Astro-Physics 3600 GTO mounts in stock. Try the Astro-Physics website to see if they are an authorized dealer.

They claim to have the Astro-Tech 111EDT in stock when Astronomics, who owns Astro-Tech, has them on wait list. They claim to have the AT-106 in stock, Astronomics doesn't even list them anymore because they have no supplier.

They claim to have the $48,000 Alluna Optics Alluna RC-24 24" f/8 Ritchey Chretien Telescope in stock... at half price.

It's bogus...

Jon

Bleh. Why do these threads keep popping up?

There's also a version of this where the "dealer" is located in Singapore, but nobody here has ever heard of them.

I guess these guys pop up because, like spam, there's still that 0.5% of greedy buyers who think they can get something at half-price (and end up getting screwed).

As the old saying goes, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Websites are cheap and a great way to part people from their money. This is a scam. Stay far, far away.

They ask you to wire them some money and send them a bunch of information about your bank account. What could possibly go wrong here

Dave, as you can see from all the replies, this place is very likely to be a rip-off! Better to scour the CN classifieds, and S&S fora for deals, as well as Astrom*** (That-Site-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named!). Using these sources you will at least have half a chance at possibly getting a bargain on a decent scope without losing your shirt!

Good luck!

As I've posted before, there is absolutely nothing to be feared by mentioning Astromart. See! Astromart. I said it again. There are no rules - stated nor implied - regarding mentioning Astromart. It most definitely is not the "Site-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named!" I'll say it again: Astromart.

I was looking at this ES scope on sale-telescopes.com:
http://www.sale-telescopes.com/products/Explore-Scientific-ED152-Carbon-Fiber...

A friend who lives in Bali Indonesia called the phone number on the web site, they got somebody who knew nothing about telescopes, and who did not know the sale-telescope name.

He visited the address in Jakarta listed on the site, and saw this:
Gramedia Building (a Book Store).

And lastly, Explore Scientific says these folks are NOT an authorized distributor.

So stay far, far away.

Now you've done it!!!!

You must now either go back and deliver unto them an shrubbery (cut down... using an herring...), or utter "The-Phrase-Which-Must-Not-Be-Uttered-Or-Spoken-Or-WHispered-Or-Mumbled" unto them (unto their ear(s)... either one will do... or all of their ears... collectively... emphasizing the capitalized letters in each word... dis-TINCT-ly) that they may then be so pain-ed, so distrac-ted, that they then forget (for an season) your having mentioned previously "That-Site-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named" that you may then escape (for an season) the consequences of having utter-ed so vile a thing as you did utter.

ASTROMART!!!

(Oh drat! Where in blazes did I put that herring?!)

Yea, but a big dob is a pretty heavy light saber handle.......now the ETX80 model light sabre is very easily weilded....it's pretty underpowered though, kneepads provide adequate protection from it......

Well I zoomed in with Google maps satellite image, and I think I can see a brand new Astro-Physics mount sitting on the clearance rack outside the building! Please wait while I mail them an envelope stuffed with $100 bills. I think they'll accept it in lieu of wire transfer.
