Hi All,
I grew up in Cleveland, been away for eons, and have a chance to get back to Ohio this summer for some star gazing. The last time I did Deep Sky was from Clay's Park but by now that's all light polluted.
Do you guys have a club or group that meets for observing that I could attend?
Have any of you tried Lamping Homestead for observing (Blue Zone)?
Thanks in advance,
Ed

Hi Ed!
Welcome to the Ohio Never Ending Star Party thread!
Being that we are all in different areas of Ohio and many other states, we don't have one specific astronomy club. We have an annual star party here at our place every summer where folks travel from Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Arizona, and the list goes on. We like to think of our gathering as the Astronomy Non-Club Club. We post on this thread when a date is set for the star party. It's typically in June around new moon. We'd love to have you join us!
I've been to Clay's Park. Actually it's not far from here. I've never viewed there and am not sure how light polluted the area is now. I'm sure some others can chime in on it, but I wanted to give you a welcome to the thread!

Hi Ed,
I belong to the Astronomy Club of Akron, as do several others who post to, or monitor, this thread.
Our observatory is at Portage Lakes State Park, about 10 miles North of Clay's Park off of SR 93.
Yes, the LP is pretty bad.
We have 2 more stargazing events scheduled this year (Nov 10th and Nov 17th).
You can get more info at http://www.acaoh.org

Most of us go to BEOTS, the one Diane was talking about. She and her husband, Scott host it and it's great fun. You might also want to check out some of the northern Ohio clubs. There are several and most have dark sites. Here's a nice one that I've been to a couple times in North-central Ohio by the Huron Valley Astronomer's Group. They have a nice annual event called Sky Tour.

(Something must have changed with my settings, I'm unable to provide an actual working link.)
If you want to travel further down south toward Columbus, the Columbus Astronomical Society has a pretty dark site just south of Zanesville that's really nice.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and invitations. It's looking like early June and near Columbus. About driving, I currently drive 112 miles one way every month here in Texas to star gaze (lotsa brown bag lunches and no extras during the month but it's well worth it), so driving a little to get to blue or green near blue zones in Ohio is okay by me. I'm not afraid to drag any body along in a carpool either to save us both a little on fuel. I'll stay in touch via this thread - yous guys are lively and fun group.
Just waxing nostalgic for a moment. Our house was in a cramped little Cleveland neighborhood off of Fleet Avenue. There were houses and trees every where so the only way I could catch a glimpse the southern part of Scorpius was by hanging over our back yard fence and looking down the row of garages. Then my dad connected our garage to the house with a roof that I could access from my bedroom window. I would take my 60mm f10 Sears Refractor with the Alt-Az Slo-motion knobs out there an set it up over the peak making available all of the goodies. At around 1am in Mid June (right after school let out) the Scorpius Jewel Box (between Mu and Zeta Sco including NGC6231) was directly South and I had an uncluttered view. Absolutely gorgeous in a low power (24X) field.

Welcome Ed. You won't find a better group of amateurs anywhere on the web. You find that we are a good cross-section of the people involved in astronomy. We have most all aspects covered. And some of these folks are very good at what they do. Stick around , it's a great place to visit.

Hi Ed! Welcome to the Ohio thread. I'm one of those Texans Diane referred to who goes up to Ohio for BEOTS some years.
Nice to see another Texan invading the thread....

The first time I observed from Clay's Park (first really dark skies for me) it took me a while to find the Big Dipper - YIKES there were a lot of stars. Another night the "Lightning Bugs" were all around going off like flashbulbs (age hint) at a concert.

I recently started started to do a review of my new ES24mm ep, and the topic of what 2 inch eps I used, I thought back to the last chance star party where I used my first 2 inch eps, and decided to go back to the thread, and relive it.naturally that far back, is in the archives now, but still available. Reliving that time was awesome.....but a little disturbing. I was mortified to look back at what I looked like then, lol. And Scott I still have the 30 mm GSO, and also the the 2 inch diagonal Mike sent my way along with the 42 mm GSO. Those two were the foundation for my love of wide field eps.

I remember that 30. Those 2" GSOs are really pretty great for the price.
Di has some pricier EPs in her case which work better with Stella's short F but the last few years I've pretty much just used my Measde Series 5000 Plossl kit. I got the whole thing with the case for like $300. They work great with the longer Fs of Leviathon and the 12" LX.
