Northwest Unknown Star Party July 4 - 7 2013
      #5786732 - 04/08/13 07:59 PM

Hey gang. We have a new moon in the summer over the Independence Day weekend July 4 - 7.

We simply cannot let this opportunity go by without organizing a star party of some sort.

Once again Table and OSP are on the same weekend. Any ideas? Maybe a second Goldendale? Most public vacation spots will be very busy. Anybody with a chunk of land in a dark area wanna turn it over to a bunch of astronomer/campers?

Stacy

Hurricane Ridge or Mount St. Hellen's or maybe somewhere on Rainier might also be a possibility.

Just ask Mike and organize one for July...I did a July and August last year...I will more than likely organize an August star party at Goldendale this year.

Yes, Mike's usually up for a Star Party lol!

As great as Goldendale is, are there any other options for July you think?

I guess anything planned for the western side of the mountains would require a contingency plan for weather, but it would sure be nice to head up to the mountains somewhere.

Mt. St. Helens would be good, but it's usually only a one day affair. If I remember, there was/is a group from Vancouver(?) that hold an event up there...can't recall the details at the moment. Tom has done it I think.

The Mt. St. Helens Institute has been holding a little star party up there - usually in August. I don't think they did it in 2012 - at least I never saw a notice and I've always got them before.

What about Hart's Pass for July 4th?

Meadows Campground - just a stones throw from there has great views. The Forest Service has even poured an observing pad atop a hill in the campground.

Here's the pad.

The trees around is are just trunks. The area burned badly 10 years ago.

Stacy, I'm sure you could sail your yacht up/down there with no problem until, of course, you meet someone going the other direction. At that point, after changing his underwear, the other guy would have to back waaaay up to let you by. Hmmmmm, on second thought it would be a serious challenge. I think there's a reason no trailers are allowed on the road.

I like Hurricane Ridge a lot. It's a terrific location for astronomy. This weekend I'll be seeing the guy who will then (7/4) be campground host at Heart O' The Hills campground. I'll ask him if it's possible to reserve some camp sites. It very well may not be possible, and over a holiday weekend chances might be sketchy. There are other campgrounds in the area, further away but not too bad; they'd be under some holiday pressure too, but then that'd be true anywhere, I guess. In fact, I might find it worth my bucks to rent a motel room in P.A.

Pixieland would be available.

Now the road is in fine shape.

JUST DON'T LOOK OVER THE SIDE on the way down. Yeah, it is hard to avoid looking if your on the passenger side.

You can always walk to short stretch of road.

If you live in Washington you should drive that road at least once in your life. It is a very scenic area.

I've tried to get a picture that does justice to Dead Horse Point and the more I think about it, the more I think this one really captures it in many ways.

Basicly the youngster is looking over the edge, and "moma" is walking away from the edge

Hmmm... Hey Mike. I wonder if he'd consider letting us "hang out" for a night or two at the Hurricane Ridge Lodge parking lot if we did some outreach? Or would that be a Ranger thing? That parking lot is huge and the outreach possibilities would be fantastic! I'm self contained so could provide a tidy "base" for meals and what-not for the group.

As a Native Port-Angeles-O-Rican like myself, perhaps he could pull a few strings? Maybe coordinate with Cliff's group? That would be an epic weekend!

Stacy

OK, here's the word. The bad news is that Heart O' The Hills is officially a non-reservation campground. The good news, however, is that the host can pay for the number of needed campsites, then be reimbursed when we arrive. He's willing to do that and in fact he sounded delighted at the prospect. He mentioned that he could cherry-pick some excellent sites for us. No, that campground has no group camp site but it has some large sites, holding as many as four tents.

Quote:

I didn't ask about that but I'm sure there would be no problem. I think anyone, astronomer or not, can stay in the parking lot at night, so long as they aren't "camping" there. I'm also sure that outreach would be appreciated. John does outreach nightly during new moon periods, weather permitting, and he'd surely welcome more guys and equipment. The only problem with joining up with his outreach is that he sets up by the day lodge, where he stores his scopes, but we'd prefer to set up at a much better astronomy area about 100 yd. away.

But here's the downside to a long Hurricane Ridge weekend. We couldn't leave our equipment set up during the day. Each day we'd have to go through a total break down, set up, unpack & pack experience. I'm not sure that amount of work appeals to me. I did it there once before (when I got smoked out of OSP a couple of years ago and camped in Minnow at Dungeness Spit) and it gets real old. That said, I'd still be willing to do it.

Yessssss...... Me likes the precious.... Opps, wrong forum!

I am thinking there will be a lot of activity up there over that particular weekend. As will probably be the case with most public sites. That can be great for outreach, but maybe not so great for observing. However, as the wee hours approach, you will probably have some serious observing time.

I can see some serious potential here. Of course there is a lot to be said for setting up at a stable location for a few days and not having your time/energy wasted on setting up and tearing down...

Still open to suggestions

I have to work that day, but am off at 1:30pm.

Sounds doable if I leave right from work and hit the Edmonds/Kingston ferry.

Chatting with the Cle Elum Ranger station, it's possible the Table Mountain area may be open by this weekend. It depends on the weather and how the District Ranger feels about it. Given that, I am setting my sights on that site for a casual, unofficial and quite unorganized mini Star Party for the July holiday weekend.

I will update as information becomes available.

Table Mountain area is open. The Ranger cautioned to be careful in burned areas, especially in windy conditions.

I plan on being up there July 4, 5, 6 and 7. If anybody would like to join there should be plenty of space. Even though some areas are burned, I believe the overall area should be pleasant.

I am planning a recon visit possibly this weekend or next.

There is a vault toilet at Lion Rock which is just a few hundred feet from the usual Table Mountain Star Party site for those who are not self-contained.

Be great to see a few of you up there!

Stacy

Stupid me, forgot my memory card for my camera, so all I have is phone pictures

Luckily Robert is much smarter (and better photographer) than me and will post some of his shots later. For now here are some phone shots:

This one shows some of the intense damage to the forest. We drove through many "hot spots" like this on the way. These trees are weak and many you can see have been recently cleared from the roads.

Drive up here cautiously - and at your own risk!

Robert has some much better quality shots I'm sure he'll post soon.

My opinion was that while some areas have suffered greatly, most of the traditional viewing area is still quite enjoyable to visit. The magic is still there and although many areas are burned, they are still quite beautiful and calming. Birds are chirping and lots of signs of other wildlife.

I am looking forward to my early July visit and hopefully we will enjoy some calm winds and clear skies.

Stacy

but much more is not devoid of life. The entire viewing field was completely untouched and the vast amount of meadow lands on Table mountain sustained little damage from the fire. It's all part of the process that takes place in the life up there. I don't think we should shy away from it and leave the location unused. There is no "healing" that needs to take place or "rest" that is required. Table Mountain will recover whether we use the observing field or not...

So... I'll be going to the "dis-organized-unknown-star-party". I'll be bringing a chainsaw in case any trees drop accross the road while we're up there. Most of the truly questionable snags have been dropped already either by the fire, wind or the USFS. But if conditions got relly windy I wouldn't be shocked to see a few down. NOT reccomended that anyone camps or sets up near the burn area's

thanks Ron and Carol!

It's certainly better than I expected in some aspects.. The burn pattern reminds my a lot of the yellowstone fire. it will be a few more years bfore the full impact on the remaining trees will be known. Some will not survive, some will come back very strong. As charred black bark begins to shed from the stands, it'll take on a bleached white look as the exposed wood weathers.

In doing some research it appears that there is some salvage logging going on, but much of what we saw up there is beyond salvage and clearly rot is setting in quickly. Pine doesn't keep, so the only stuff that might be usable in a comercial sense is fir tree's. There were quite a few firewood harvesters up there, as there are every year.

Stacy and Robert, thanks much for the report and photos. I am heartened by the photos, yes damage and the forest will take years to recover, but the Table Mountain site looks great, and the grass, sage and heather is thriving.

Any interest in making an August trip there?

Thanks again!

Thanks for the tour, guys. That was a fine little piece of photojournalism.

I expected wider incidence of the "totally sanitized" areas, based on my one previous trip up there. I did a fair amount of wandering through the woods then, and there was a tremendous amount of dead wood "fuel" lying around virtually everywhere. It looks though, as if a few trees survived in most areas and the long term results of the fire in those areas will be typical forest fire house cleaning regeneration. In about 2002, 2 or 3 years after the epic north Cascades fire that swept from south of Leavenworth up to Lake Chelan, I took a carload of kids camping up the Entiat River. When departing we took forest service roads overland to Lake Chelan and it was many square miles of Robert's "totally sanitized" shot -- areas that will require decades, rather than years, to regenerate.

It's still looking as if I'll be able to sneak up there for a night the weekend of July 6, even though I'll start a drive to North Dakota in the middle of the following week.

As a matter of fact, depending on how the July trip works out, I may forgo OSP in favor of Table. It's such a *BLEEP*-shoot for the seeing at OSP that I am considering trading the darker skies (and the new chef!) for the closer proximity of Table.

Have to see how it goes.

That was the Tyee Creek Fire. I think there was a second fire in the Icicle River and into the Tumater Canyon at the same time. I had a photo of a helicopter dipping water out of the Wenatchee River; you could just see the main rotor blades peeking above the guardrail along Highway 2...

My one trip to Table was, I think, in 2006. I haven't gone back, mostly because of the disappointing level of light pollution to the south. If I go up for a night in July and (fingers crossed!) hit a good night I'll reevaluate. My $.02 US.

Hmmmm, Maybe we're talking about two different events, or the two separate burns you mentioned merged. When the woods are that dry there's usually more than one fire. I remember the fire jumping US 2 west of L/worth and continuing north.

No passes or permits are required. Just drive safe and if high winds are present, be extra careful driving through the "hot spots".

Hi Mike, the Tyee creek fire was massive. Largets in washington state in the 20th century. It burned uncheked for 33 days in 1994. 135,000 acres... When I drove up the Entiat river there were places 5 miles away that clearly looked like the bottom of a campfire pit that was just white ash. The fire that was over in the Tumwater Canyon was the Hatchery Creek fire/Rat Creek Fire + Round Mountain fire.

Quote:

On Sunday evening, July 24 [1994], a lightning storm moved through Central Washington,
igniting more than forty-one fires on the Wenatchee National Forest and a total of ninety-nine
fires in Washington State....The storm came on the heels of record-breaking summer temperatures,
reaching into the 100 degrees range, to forests already impacted by several years of
drought-like conditions....Extreme fire behavior thwarted significant containment efforts through
the first few days of initial attack on these fires. Fire behavior was said to defy description or
comparison with what most seasoned firefighters had previously seen.

How are the dirt roads coming in? Spoke with Ron. My wife and I will probably come up for some viewing July 4-7 in our 23' RV. We've had it up there last year, no problems getting up. Just wondering if the roads suffered any damage over the winter or if the FS has repaired them.
Clear Skies,

I am looking forward to this show. I am going with my step-son. We introduced him to Bob Marley. I guess he enjoyed it as our Grandson's middle name is Marley. Apearing with Eric Burdon. First song I ever learned on the guitar was "House of the Rising Sun", so that should be fun as well.

Hey Stacy,

I was at Table Mountain in 2010. Been a while. Can't find the map with driving directions at the TMSP site.

Are these directions via Google Maps correct?

The directions are to Lion Rock, but that's close enough, right?

Yes, I would say that is correct. my memory says that once you exit I90 and cross over the freeway, you come to a 4 way stop intersection. Go straight ahead about 1/4 mile. take a left onto Reecer creek rd. once on Reecer creek road, I pretty much ignore the signs(because there are many for upper and lower green canyon roads) and follow that main path. There are some turns in the road as you get coser to the foot of Table Mountain, but you are clearly staying on the main road that heads up Table.

Hey Stacy,

I was at Table Mountain in 2010. Been a while. Can't find the map with driving directions at the TMSP site.

Are these directions via Google Maps correct?

The directions are to Lion Rock, but that's close enough, right?

Ajay

Hi Ajay,

I think you take exit 106 off I-90. Go straight at the intersection, but you may want to grab some ice or water at one of the convenience stores there. Then left on Reeer Creek.

I always just stay on Reecer Creek road (main road) then it turns into one lane Forest Service road. Paved for all but the last 2 or three miles (stay on the paved road and you'll be fine). When it turns to gravel, just stay on 35 (or FS3500) it is the most traveled. You will see the site to the left just before you come to a 4 way intersection, at which you turn left.

Oh yes! I'm going to try for Friday evening but might not make it up till Saturday depending on my friend that is coming along with me. My biggest issue is trying to decide wich camera I want to choose... and what to bring for dinner on Saturday night

My "plan," such as it is, is to go up Saturday, spend the night, then return Sunday. If the forecast is for better weather Friday night I may do that instead. Either way, it'll be just one night for me. I'll be leaving to drive to North Dakota the following Wednesday.

I figure on traveling light, sleeping in the truck. And dang! My Coleman camp stove had a fatal malfunction over the Luau weekend! As far as I can tell, a critical part for the pump broke off and slipped through a small hole into the inside of the fuel bottle. I'll have to commission a certain friend known to haunt swap meets to locate a new stove for me. He's a genius; he found the one that just died, used maybe once, for $10. I'll do fine with a backpacking stove and won't do much cooking anyway . . . maybe just morning coffee.

As of today, the 4th, 5th, 6th evenings all show clear with light winds. Moonrise between 3AM and 5AM.

I am going to ask the folks in Ellensburg and Wenatchee to turn out their lights for the weekend to give us a break.

PS, If you live in Ellensburg or Wenatchee please turn out your lights this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Thanks.

Just got a message from Bill (Wayazo). He and his wife took their motor home up to Table today.
There are many horses, trucks, and trailers in and among the tree area.
He is parked down at the south end of the meadow by the AP area. He says it is wide open down there.

That's where I usually end up anyway... Geeze ? what? are they having the ellensburg rodeo up there? Hope they have low light courtesy. I'll be up Friday evening, I'm open minded and certainly willing to give her a go, but if that bunch of equestrian enthusiasts are a pain, I'll head north for Saturday night. Don't get me wrong, got lots of friends who have lots of horses... I'm just not all that certain that the two compliment each other

Well to be honest Robert, I am so used to observing in
sub-idea conditions that I don't know if it will be a bother to me or not.
We can probably arrange the vehicles to make a "steel curtain " and reduce any spurious lighting to a minimum.
I will be going up there Sat afternoon, hope you decide to stay.

I was up there Thursday and Friday, got back today.
The tens of Rv's and horse trailers scared us off and we setup at a lower field that was equally good as the main field. We also needed a shaded spot for the tent and there weren't any at the main field. Sorry I missed you guys. It was a good two nights of imaging.
I am planning to head up there again next weekend!

Andy

Great shots Robert and Ron!

Saturday night we had about 30 students from Edmonds/Shoreline area, who are visiting from Japan, stop by to look through our telescopes. I showed them all Saturn and M13, which garnered lots of squeals and ohs and ahs as they had never looked through a telescope before! Mike showed them the Swan and another glob I believe and Robert his Northern Lights shots from the night before. It was fun to share the view.

I also was surprised to see lots of campers, sani-cans and horses up there when we got there Thursday but they turned out to be very low impact. Great neighbors as well. Some of the horses were amazing!

Thursday night was the best I think. Friday's light show was just great fun! It was also nice of Christopher to share the view through his 6" Televue. Saturday Ajay came up from down below and Ron also joined us. While not as good as the previous nights, us Northwest astronomers can't complain when we get consecutive clear new moon weekends. I had three great nights of viewing this month as well as last month at Mike's place in Goldendale.

Table Mountain has lost some trees, but none of it's beauty as far as I'm concerned. Enjoying the sunrise over the wildflower meadows with a creamy latte' is just about as good as it gets.

Thanks to everybody who came up and made this a weekend to remember.

Stacy

Thanks for the pix, guys!

It was an unblemished weekend, decorated with new acquaintances, thousands of wildflowers and beautiful weather, all at a lovely location.

I suspect Ajay encountered a freeway slowdown just before the rest area at Indian John Hill. Ajay and I caravaned down the hill yesterday morning. I didn't see him follow me onto the freeway and I think he may have stopped for gas. I continued on and a collision happened about 200 yd. ahead of me. I saw two cars careen uphill through the meridian about 1.25 mi. before the rest area, raising great clouds of dust. I suspect injuries, if any, were minor, since neither car rolled. I was past the accident in a few seconds but probably those behind me weren't so lucky. It must have been terrifying for those involved but perhaps simply an expensive lesson in defensive driving.

Independence Holiday weekend was stunning here.

Saturday we celebrated my daughters 22 birthday with a big outdoor party..which included lots to eat..BBQ'd everything.. and I smoked several huge slabs of beef too(started that at 6:00 am). Live music...:).Then we had 4 quads for everyone to ride, horse shoes and then we also set up the range and shot guns...some folks brought all kinds of guns to shoot, that was real fun. We then had a huge bonn fire..(A trailer load of wood) , then we shot off lots of fireworks.....then.....when all was clear..I opened up the OB and we had a great night viewing the stars...(Many had never looked through a telescope before..let alone one so large). Everybody had a great time...about 50~60 people attended.

What a day...it was Epic.

I was not far behind, perhaps only a minute or two. I missed the slow down. The occupants of one car got out. Some in the other seem to be slow getting out. I saw a couple of ambulances headed east later.

Ajay
