A few questions:

1. Do they run electricity lines for the participants? (I have sleep apnea and must use a CPAP machine while sleeping.) Of course I need electricity for my scopes too....

2. Food service: Breakfast Lunch and dinner? What days are they there? (i.e. if I arrive Wednesday will there be food?)

2a. Can one arrive early?

Thanks,

Dave

There is always someone arriving early. For each day before and after the star party all you have to do is to pay a nominal fee ($11 or $13? - I can't remember) for camping privileges on the observing field. If you get there early you should have no problems hooking up to the "electrical cord octopi" (permanent electrical outlets located strategically around the field). Bring your own heavy gauge octopi arms. Food was available for the Cherry Springs Star Party held this past June for a good part of the day and night (perhaps around the clock?). However the food vendor was lamenting on the fact that he/she was not making a profit. So it might be wise to bring ones' own provisions just in case.

Dave ( & Ted), camping is now $13/night for nights other than star parties. Many people arrive early, some days early. It's a good idea if you want a great spot. You pay by filling out an envelope near the bathroom, and dropping it (and your money) into the green tube. They do check! Again, this is only for non-star party nights.

There's no food vendor except during the star party, and it's pretty basic "burgers & such". They do all 3 meals and are open all night, but Ted is right, they did not seem to have a lot of business, so I hope we don't lose them in future years. There is drinkable water. I always bring supplementary food, like a pre-made salad, breakfast cereal and milk, etc, and do a meal or two at a local restaurant. The nearest restaurants are about 20 minutes one-way. Yes it's safe to leave your stuff on the field, but I'd not leave out eyepieces, etc.

There are showers at Lyman Run State Park, about 20 minutes away.

AC power: there are plenty of hookups, but you need your own power cords to plug in.

WiFi-> doesn't work really well. Cell phone service: spotty at best. The only coverage I have is with the phone built into my Chevy Silverado.

White lights, especially headlights-> turn um on and you die!

...except in an emergency of course.

There will be plenty of friendly folks on the field to help out a new person.

Look for me while you are there....it will be my first major star party as well! We can learn the ropes together! I'll be there with members of my local club and also some other great people I met here on CN.

Can't wait! Really looking forward to this. This weekend I was observing from a fairly dark site and the views were amazing. Black Forest should be even better! It will give my 16" dob a good workout!

Can't wait to see some of the other equipment there too. I want to get ideas on improving my scope.

According to Maxine (and others) on the Cherry Springs Yahoo Group:

Domes at Cherry Springs are all down!

The big Pro Dome is out-of-round and they're not sure if they can fix it, and if they can they plan to move it across the road to house a telescope they just purchased for public programs.

All the clamshells have electrical problems and can't open. They are looking into a way to use a hand crank to open/close them.

The roll-off observatory is OK.

The State Police forced them to just put up a new 90 foot tower near the bathrooms for some sort of emergency communications system (required by post-911 state law). At least there's no lights on it, but there's a larger one with lights that can be seen from the field when the leaves are down during the winter.

You can park your car on top of your scope and tent if you want, but people usually like to spread out a little. Everything can be as close as you want and if the weather is good it will be very crowded.

It is exactly as Jeremy said. One further thought is to make sure that you have a good view of the sky and enough turning radius for your telescope. The later that one arrives the harder it is to park a large vehicle in a position that will not block the sky from those who have already set up.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be there early by a couple of days so I will probably be OK to set up near my car. I have a solid tube 12" and don't want to have to hike a mile with it.

How do you guys set up and leave your scopes out the entire time? Is a couple of tarps enough to keep it out of the weather for the most part?

Never been to one of these so I'm getting a little excited as I try to plan.

I used to just carry my solid tube 12" newt back in the tent if rain was coming. Most leave theyr gear set up all weekend and cover it up or just cap the tube if the weather is nice.

edit* Speaking of covers. I just bought a telegizmos horizontal park cover for my dob from Ebay user ruby123 who runs the Ebay store for SmartAstronomy. It was about $50 cheaper than anywhere else I could find.

I'll just list everything i've learned to bring from the last 8 years attending star parties there.

Tarps - they'll do a decent job protecting your scope from rain, make sure there are no holes though. A dedicated cover fits a little better but costs a bit more than a tarp. I stake my tarps down so they don't catch a strong breeze and knock the scope over, which has happened to others.

Dew - You need a dew heater. You need a bigger battery for your dew heater than expected. You need dew straps on every surface you expect to use (secondary, eyepiece, finderscope, telrad). In a pinch, hand warmers rubber banded to these items does work very well. Make sure nothing on the secondary can fall off and hit the primary. Your books and maps will be soaked by the end of the night, keep them covered or have something over them (ie in an alcove). The grass will soak whatever shoes or boots you're wearing, waterproof boots are very handy.

Lights - Red. Anything else and you may be shot. People don't always think about lights in their car that may come on from opening a door (lights in the door) or accidentally hitting the lock button. No white light in your tent either, it'll be noticed. No laser pointers.

It can get pretty cold some nights so have plenty of layers and hand warmers. Frost is totally possible but not likely.

Don't hog the outlets on the field, bring an extension cord and a power strip.

Bring the right size allen wrenches, screw drivers, etc to tweak your scope.

Put your eyepieces and small valuables that can be walked off with in your car (make sure lights wont come on) or in your tent at night. Sadly things on a rare occasion have walked off, primarily eyepieces left out.

Don't forget sunscreen during the day, little shade out on the field.

The 24 hour food on site is ok, but the best food is in town, 15 minutes away.

Have a list of what you want to look at and good deep charts. If you haven't been under extremely dark skies it's easy to get disoriented and kind of wonder what to look at. On transparent nights the skies are VERY dark there.

Ask to look through other scopes! Everything imaginable can show up, from a 32" dob to a 6" apo, there are some very nice scopes and eyepieces to take a peak through.

You definitely shouldn't put any tickets in the raffle.

OK. Now about the dew heaters. If I show up with a bunch of hand warmers, will someone show me how to use them? While I'm hoping to get some great views of some things, I'm more about learning to use my equipment that I have at this point. I mean, when I get all dewed up at home, I just call it a night.

Thanks

Bring a bunch of large rubber bands in good shape. Open the hand warmers, rubber band them around whatever is getting dewed up like the secondary (if it's too large for a rubber band, velcro straps?), plus eyepieces, finders, and telrads are easy enough to rubber band them on. Just get them on the sides of whatever is dewed up and they'll warm the whole thing up, eventually stopping dew. It's easier to start dew prevention before you get dewed up, then to try and fight dew after it shows up.

I'm trying to hurry and make a dew heater using a fan controller from a computer. I have the control unit complete. I added a resister to my telrad so that should be OK. I have a 12v dryer that I can use if needed too.

I'm going to try to make a few eyepiece heaters out of velcro straps and Nichrome wire....If I can't complete these I'll go with the handwarmer/Rubber band route.

My secondary doesn't dew up too badly (solid tube dob) but at that location it might. The design of the secondary doesn't make adding heating elements very easy.

Your secondary will dew up, potentially very very quickly on some nights.

I also highly recommend making a dew shield for dobs. It may some a little odd for a dob, but it can really help a dew heater out by having a dew shield. MessiTom is right too, your primary could even get dew on it at the BFSP if you're up long enough. We didn't drive 5+ hours to get dewed out in an hour! I've seen dew forming on things while it's still twilight there...

Another way to delay the dew is to keep the covers on until astronomical twilight is over and then begin to view the objects you want to see. The views won't suffer that much while your telescope acclimates and you will not dew up during the process.

What material should I make a dew shield from? The tube is 19 inches in diameter. How far should it extend? I've never seen a dob outfitted with a dew shield.

A favorite material is a thin foam camping pad. I believe the rule of thumb for a dew shield is 1-1/2 times the aperture, though the ones I have seen on dobs look closer to 1X.

A heads up for you. I was just able to pick up a 10 pack (20 handwarmers) for $8.00 at Lowes. I was also able to find a roll of black craft foam (36"*60") at Micheals Crafts for about $5.00.

I found black foam too...36 x 60 but it isn't quite long enough! I'm glueing some together. I also have some thin pieces of wood to support the foam.

Tested the dew heater today in the garage. Seems to be working great. I did find out the some of my channels are not working. One I know is blown. The others I think are poor soldering on my part. I'll open it up this week check the connections.

I just got my confirmation, I'm signed up!! Very excited. If anyone else is going alone and wants to meet up send me a PM. This will be my second star party, 1st only a few weeks ago. Haven't been to skies this dark yet!!

Instead of a tent I'm thinking ill rent a minivan to sleep in. Warmer and quieter. Do you guys know if there's a place to park it for sleeping away from the field? I just read on the FAQ there is 30 dedicated camping sites but appears to be no way to PRE purchase. It says you can RV in the field so I guess I could do that it I can block all the lights on the thing somehow ... Thoughts from ppl who's been? I'd prefer the campsite but if I can't guarantee ill have it I'd like to be prepared.

To the guy building the dew controller: I've done the same thing with a fan speed controller I bought for about 12$, works great!!! I wired an additional 12Ah battery to my battery tanks existing 7Ah battery and it worked great , could have gone all night (if I could have at is).

I don't have a secondary dew heater though.. Going to try to get/make one before then. And heck I'll bring my refractor as backup (have plenty of dew straps for that)!

Go to a craft store and get a sheet of red cellophane and cover you interior lights with that. I'm sitting here making flashlights as we speak!!! LOL
Also covering my Kindle for my push to. I know what you mean about getting excited as this is my first one.

I don't have time between now and then to make a dew heater but I got hand warmers to use. I made a dew shield today and made one for my Telrad as well. It's all set up in the yard right now so I'll see if they help any tonight.

I keep everything sort of organized in milk crates so I made a table top to sit on top of those for a table.

Only thing I'm not sure about is covering at night and do I need a tarp or something as a sort of floor. I've got some huge trash bags that I suppose I could use as a cover if needed plus they don't take up much room for packing. A solid tube dob just takes up so much space in a Jeep Patriot.

I was just at a craft store too. I have a red flashlight already....Would be nice to have a spare or two.

I have a large tarp to cover my scope if necessary. I'll also have a 10x10 shelter just in case.

I drive a Red Chevy Tahoe...I'll be bringing a 16" Solid Tube Dub. Takes up nearly every bit of room! Takes some crafty packing but I should be OK.

Sleep in the van on the field. Tape a cover over the dome light and keep your hand off of the panic alarm/door lock button and you are all set.

I'll have a small tent and a 10x10 shelter that I'll setup pretty much right on top of each other. I have a large tarp to go over the scope.

Should have a tarp to under the scope itself? I use a ladder most of the time to get to the eyepiece and the tarp would take quite a beating. I do have a tarp I use under my tent that I could use in a pinch.

A ground tarp helps keep where you're walking drier (drier boots and slightly less local moisture for dew), plus if you drop anything it can be easy to find it. However, if you're planning on using a plastic tarp, the crinkling may drive you insane. Canvas or carpet = best option but it's not absolutely needed, just a nice extra when observing.

BFSP is fast approaching!! Some of us in the CAS caravan will be arriving sometime Wednesday afternoon to get an early jump on observing. Look for the weirdo with the floppy camo hat, a Rush T-Shirt on, and lounging away smoking my pipe, and that should be me.

I am bringing my 12.5" telescope I made which should be plenty in the dark skies of PA.

Looking forward to seeing other Cloudy Nighters there!

Rush t-shirt?! ?today is Alex's 60th I might wear my tie dye grateful dead shirt with the little aliens on it. Don't ask

I actually have an extra 8x12' canvas tarp when I bought some for light shades at home. Good idea i might bring that. I had my 10" in a green zone and was very happy so I know it will be plenty of aperture for me. I have some of the foam camping pads that are blue.. I might bring a scrap of that as extra dew shield since I don't have a dew heater for the secondary yet. I have everything for finder/telrad EP thpugh. Lately I haven't been able to stay out long enough for it to dew over anyhow. And I ordered a 12v hair dryer finally, just in case .

After the Caravan arrives, when the evening comes, right about the time of the Twilight Zone, we Countdown to the anticipated darkness. Hopefully, we picked a spot where The Trees will not block much of our view. As we gaze upon the remaining Available Light from the The Big Wheel in the sky, we draw in a deep breath and for a moment, Time Stands Still. Soon, our telescopes will be bagging DSOs Hand Over Fist. Those with larger telescopes are Driven to see many faint objects, but the rest of us with smaller scopes have a Ghost of a Chance to see them, but it is hard to Resist trying! Of course, it would be Heresy if we sleep through the night and it is clear!! If you do decide to lay down, make sure you are Face Up to see the stars! Astroimagers will busily collect photons through The Camera Eye attached to their telescopes. I know they use Kid Gloves with those refractors!!

In The End, for those of us that have never been under darker skies, the Afterimage will be in our minds indefinitely. When we return home and unpack, hopefully, we won't be saying, uh, Where's My Thing?...you know, questioning where you left your Ethos without Losing It. who might not use Kid Gloves and you end up in the Limelight in the cage with By-tor & The Snow Dog that will

Thanks Bill! It's a pretty good list of vendors, may be picking up an item or two. I'm especially excited to check out the meteorite collections, they're always impressive.

I second that notion (meteorites) ^. NOW if only I had some money to spend.

At this time of year I don't ever remember a problem with either. Someone who's been there recently would know if anything is up though.

It's going to be chilly at night.

There was another hatch of gnats and small flies last week in my area about sixty miles from the park. The cool weather that is on the way tonight should put a damper on the flying insects.

Most excellent! I too am getting pretty stoked about the party. I have all the gear packed up and ready to go. Just need to pack the other stuff (like toiletries, towels, snacks, and other such things). 4:00am will be here soon.

Oh yeah.. I will have my tie dye Rush shirt to bring along too! No aliens, but there is a guy standing in front of a star (2112)

Just a heads up since it's still technically summer...the low Thursday night is in the upper 30's. Friday night they're calling for low 40's or maybe 50 depending on the website. It's going to be one of the colder BFSPs!

Leaving later this morning to start heading up there today. Should take us about 4.5 hours or so from North Jersey. Will be bringing our flagship 20" F/3.5 (with recently First-Light'ed Lightholder primary mirror!) Truss-Dob, a customer's 10" F/5 TT/Custom, our 11" F/4.5 STS and our 8" F/6 STS. Looking forward to seeing everyone up there. Please be sure to stop by our set up on the field and say "Hi!", especially at night so you can test drive any of the scopes listed above - that's why we bring so many scopes, so we can share.

Safe trips everyone,

The Hickson Observing Atlas, an awesome guide:

As it says on our web page, if people are buying food, they will stay open longer past 2am. So I am not sure what there is to be "disappointed" about ZB. They are also open on Thursday which is before the BFSP officially begins.

Report from the field:

First night down. Looks like about 200+ people already here. We were surprised to see so many so soon. The skies were clear until about 10:00pm when we started seeing some wispy clouds moving in and out. Around 12am the clouds were thicker. Many turned in (like ourselves) early. It rained a little around 4am.

In spite of the clouds, the observing was good until we turned in. I stuck with familiar targets for now. Tonight, I will try to do a more serious observing run. Glad I brought cold weather gear

And the view through Rob Teeter's 20" was awesome! Thanks Rob!

Report from the field:

Thursday night was magical. The skies were very clear but it was pretty cold. I picked up a used 80mm Stellarvue ED doublet that I used for the first time that night. The view of Andromeda was spectacular in it! I used to own a 90mm Megrez, and I missed the views from a refractor so this was a nice acquisition.

Last night we got about 3 hours of observing until the soup came in and we decided to pack the scopes up. It was disappointing but it was nice to get a few hours in.

I am very impressed with this place and want to return on a new moon weekend. It is such a nice facility.

Nice to meet some of my fellow Cloudy Nighters here.

Hopefully post more later but the IPad cramps up my hands... Heheheh

We're at a Camp Ground approx. 30 miles west of CS and I have my SN10 here. Last night, planned on coming up for the Public Session but well, it was totally clouded over and raining. So that was a no go. I had my LXD75 mount set up from the previous night here and covered with a tarp with the scope itself stored in our motor home. Got ready to go to bed around 10:30, looked out the window. Stars! Errr. Said the heck with and went to bed anyway.

I didnt win anything this year. BUT I was tickled that During Rob Teeters talk about the evolution of the dobsonian a picture of mine was used of a boundary layer fan that had been posted on the forum here.

For anyone that was freezing thursday night when it was in the 30's, I highly recommend getting one of the $99 liner vests here:

http://www.heatedclothing4u.com/#!core-heat/cee5

I had the vest and an extended battery and was nice and toasty the entire night (despite an autoimmune issue making me very susceptible to the cold) while people around me had to call it a night to warm up in their sleeping bags.

hi all,

Even though the skies weren't as clear for as many nights as I would have liked,
Still, it was a good time spent with Kiski Astronomers club members, and friends, (new and old), from around the region.
Took a lot of observing field camera pictures and deep-sky video-captures, which will take awhile to process.
I'll send out a Starparty report sometime in the next week or two, but for now, here's a couple of Youtube videos.

http://youtu.be/qnLZlHE6ut8
Taken at the 2013 Black Forest Star Party held at Cherry Springs State Park, PA.
Night of Wednesday, Sept 4th 2013 at 11:08pm - bolide falling in the SE thru Aquarius.
It was as bright as the Full Moon, casting shadows on the ground.
Unfortunately, the bolide itself was on the left-hand side, just out-of-frame of the video capture session.
But, you can see it lighting up the clouds. A number of people on the observing field reported hearing a boom.
Captured using a Samsung SDC435 video camera using a 3mm CCTV lens.
Time-lapse 1 frame every 30 seconds over multiple hours - exposure up to 8 seconds.

That's unfortunate, the nights will be shorter and the weather may not be quite as good as in september.

They schedule around the new moon so I guess we have to take it when we can. Can't wait. Anyone ever been to the other one that's up there in the spring?

The Cherry Springs star party in the spring is similar. The weather at that time of the year is usually cloudier and wetter than in September.

I'd rather have it in the 2nd or 3rd week of September when the nights will be longer and clearer. Guess i'll just end up driving up that weekend for an unofficial star party.

With those date is August I don't think I'll be making it next year. I work at a company that installs Point of Sale Equipment into school districts. August is our busiest time.

Getting a 1/2 day in September was tough enough....August will be impossible.

Thank you to everyone that attended BFSP 2013 last weekend! While the weather wasnít stellar, there are some things we just canít control. ;-) If you have any input on the things we can do something about, please let us know by taking the post-star party survey. Registered attendees should have received an email containing a link to the survey. If you have not already done so, please take a few minutes to give us your feedback.

Thanks again and hope to see you at next year's BFSP!

Friday night into Saturday morning I measured 21.08 with my SQM.

That can't be with a clear sky. If so then the sky at Cherry Springs has seriously degraded. SQM postings for there previously used to be in the 21.5 and up range.

I used my SQM on Thurs. at about 11:30 PM and got readings from 21.52 to 21.75. An average of around 21.65.
A friend who was with me used his and obtained 21.25 to 21.42.
In the past our readings were very similar so possibly the batteries were weak on the other two meters.
I thought the skys were darker this year than at last years BFSP but not as dark as maybe 4-5 years ago.

John

Sky Quality Meter. It measures just how dark the sky really is. As far as what the levels of bad skies to pristine skies I am not sure.

I'd like to get on my self as I was at Black Forest on Friday night an the seeing was pretty good. It was only marginally better than when I observed from my parents house only about an hour south of Rochester, NY. Though at Black Forest I could see more definition of the milky way than I recall at my parents.

I also got a reading of 21.95 initially. So if I average them I get 21.50. Of course this was while pointing straight up at the Milky Way.

Friday night was not good. It was largely clear but there were a lot of high clouds and haze obscuring the sky. You could see all the high thin clouds before it got dark. Thursday was dramatically better. Bright star clouds all the way to the horizon. Friday, the milky way was all washed out. Wednesday was OK too for awhile.

Those other readings are more of what I was expecting. With the very low 21 reading I imagine there was a great deal of cloud in the sky.

Yes, give it another chance. Here's a photo I took Thursday showing the milky way nicely to the trees.

I was not at this year's BFSP, but that SQM reading seems rather bright, but might be influenced by the Milky Way. I've had SQM readings at Cherry Springs over the past several years of 21.4 to 21.7.

Similar to 2 years ago? ....with new moon in the last week of the month. This also means Stellafane will be in July in 2014.

Anyway, this works out great for me, since I can only come to BFSP when it is at the end of August. I spend Sept in the Adirondacks (where I had 5 clear nights in the last 2 weeks and SQM readings of 21.6 or so, and it never got below freezing).

I was at CSSP this year for 5 nights, with the first and last being clear. In 2011 CSSP had 2 clear nights and I was at Cherry Springs in May for another 3 clear nights, plus a 4th 'half clear'.... so you never know about what weather will bring at Cherry Springs.

I'm probably going to be back to Cherry Springs early in October for a mid-week run. I've done that twice in the past 4 years and had 3 and 4 clear nights in a row, below freezing one year, but in the upper 40's the other one. A great time of the year to hunt down fall galaxies early and 'winter' stuff in Orion, etc, pre-dawn, plus all of the leaves are changed. I love October at CS.

Brett,

Reservations are not required.

Registration: Astronomers wishing to use the Astronomy Observation Field are required to register and pay a user fee. Please see the park bulletin board for fee schedule and to acquire a fee payment envelope. Please follow written instructions, posted fee schedule, and list your location on the field so that you can be located in an emergency, then deposit it in the fee tube.

I think it was $13 a night, I didn't see that on the link Dave posted.

Does the wifi usually work ok if there isn't a large star party like BFSP? It was completely clogged when I went, so was cut off, since ATT doesn't work up there (verizon seemed to for some)

Although there's nothing yet on the "official" BFSP website, the Pennsylvania State Parks website's park events page lists the dates for BFSP 2014 as Aug 22-24 2014.
