Ok, I'm in.

Kerry, I wouldn't hold it against you if you cancel if not enough give thumbs ups.

Pixie wants to go too. She seems kind of proud of her scar and wants to show it off.

Oops.

I just realized that the time period you've set is not the same weekend I've had on my calendar all year. (I put all new moon weekends on my calendar in January.) I'm planning on an astronomy trip the following weekend. I've had your weekend marked off for backpacking. While I may not be backpacking (thanks to a knee injury) I will probably not go to G/dale that weekend. (Now I understand Brad's comment about "not on Labor Day.")

I'll probably go to either G/dale or Brothers S.P. the following weekend, 9/6-9.

I'm still up for the 6-9th. How much would it cost to keep the sani-can left for another week? I suppose they might have to come clean it anyway?

Kerry,

The sani-can from Bishop Sanitation (509-773-4707) is the same price for up to 28 days as it is for one week. If you order it can you just have them leave it until Sept 11th? Or if you prefer, let me know and I'll order it. If it needs cleaning after your weekend let me know and I'll call in for it to be serviced.

So I guess both weekends are a go. Take your pick, or both.

Brad

If you want to order it, I'll split the cost with you...it will be pretty light use on our weekend...PM me your address and I'll shoot you a check.

Well yes, they should know and they may have printed out detailed directions and stuck them in my file, but if they get a new driver it might be a bit of a problem. I guess ask them to search for directions in a file under my name. I'd be happy to tal k to their dispatcher if she needs to call me. They should have my number.

And an important reminder to all: probably the only real rule I've gotta insist on is no open flames, charcoal or the like. It's a tinderbox this time of year. Thanks much.

My plan is to be there on the afternoon of the 6th and might stay, depending on weather, until Monday morning the 9th. I hope to see you there Steve (and Stacy?). I have connected with another astronomer in the Olympia area who may also come with his wife.

I have ordered the honey bucket, but only with hand sanitizer inside and not the wash station. The wash station would more than double the cost. However, if I get howls of protest I can call them back and get the wash station too, but need to do so soon.

Brad

After the last month of being a hostage employee at Whidbey Island for 4 days a week, I'm leaning on doing both weekends. I expect to be there until monday on the first weekend but only may be able to do Saturday night on the second weekend. If the boss doesn't want to work friday prior to the second weekend then I can make Friday and Saturday.

I would love to get out there for at least three nights, 6-7-8, but will have to see what the weather looks like closer to the date. It's a $300 gas commitment. Not sure if I have any vacation left, so might have to take a hit there as well. It will all be worth it if the weather cooperates!

I don't blame you for your caution, Stacy. It's an investment for all, in some kind of currency. My biggest concern is just how smoky it will be. Most of us have two weeks. Pray for rain!

. . .and while I'm talking to Stacy . . . I'll be meeting a bunch of friends for the Dark Star Orchestra show in Bremerton Fri., 10/4. Why not get a ticket or two & join us?

Anyone know if smoke is still in the air? If there are any road conditions going via Yakima?

Smoke is my primary concern, given that the long range weather forecast is pretty positive. Here:
http://www.nwccweb.us/information/firemap.aspx
is a map with info. on fires. It looks as if the largest is immediately south of The Dalles. With good weather I'd expect the winds to move around to northerly, moving the smoke away from us. The Conrad Lake fire is the next-nearest and it looks small, but with good weather we'd probably get at least a little smoke from it.

On honey bucket: What's the latest word on allocating expenses? Are Kerry & Brad splitting the cost, or what? I'd be willing to "tip" both of you but I'll probably see only Brad on weekend #2. If that's the situation you should PM me your mailing address, Kerry.

And Kerry, maybe 3 weeks ago I finally finished the bottle of exquisite gin you gave me. (Can I say that on a public forum?) I'm pretty sure that at least 6 people had tastes. Thanks again!

The honey bucket should be there tomorrow, and I did not order the wash station, but did order the hand sanitizer. So bring your own wash water. Kerry and I did split the cost. I'll be looking forward to seeing you, and anyone else coming the second weekend.

Decided against Goldendale
I checked hour to hour prediction and two of three nights partly cloudy - which could mean great or terrible. It would cost me a lot of money as a gamble. I will see how things break next week but have a number of potential family obligations.

Best of luck to those who do go!

I am thinking of heading up Friday 9/6 afternoon and staying three nights leaving Monday depending on weather.

The other option would be to head up Thurs. but it's already a short week with Monday off....

Smoke, no, but if you missed it there's link to fire info second post from top above.

I've never looked up air quality indexes; would that hold clues?

So who else will be there this Friday, Aug 30 besides Kerry?

I will make it. I invited my students but no one took me up on it. So it will be just me in my party.

Anyone have a couple of 48mm filters of any kind that is cheap or unloved to spare? I am in desperate need of said filters to use as spacers for a field flattener. My last minute measurement showed that I am off by more than 10 mm. If you have a couple let me know if I can pick them up tomorrow if you are conveniently located.

If not I may need to head up to Seattle and try Glazers or try Robi's in Lakewood. If you know any camera stores in between Seattle and Tacoma that might have slightly non-standard parts (48 mm seems to be not in vogue except in the world of telescopes), that information would be valuable as well.

If I can't find some in the am tomorrow, I may have to push back my arrival to Saturday.

Thanks.

Ajay

Don't forget to try to get an early start if you are heading out this Friday afternoon guys. After 2 or 3 things will be gridlock on all roads heading out of town.

Sure wish I could join you.

Just to be clear, the spacers have to be filter threaded. Regular T-threaded spacers won't work in this situation.

Alright, so my quest for spacers is fulfilled! I found some at Robi's Camera in Lakewood. Going there was a great idea. It is an old-fashioned brick and mortar camera shop with stuff (old and new) that will make most of you drool. Prices weren't bad. They carry some Meade stuff and I saw one Televue EP in the display case. There aren't many camera stores like this around any more. Pop in and see for yourselves some time.

Hope to see some of you tomorrow. I still have some prep work to do and its already 3:00 p.m. Don't have hopes of making it there in good time.

Just got back home from two great nights. The first one (Sat night) was the best I've ever seen anytime in WA state.
Sunday night was super windy so lost a lot of data.

Even so the images I shot (Fireworks Galaxy and M33) look really nice after preliminary processing. I will post as soon as I get them done.

Thanks you guy's! I kind of like the simplicity of that picture!

Well it was a really nice time at Pixieland! I want to thank Mike for letting us use the place and Kerry for arranging it. I travelled light with DSLR's, LXD75 mount, AT65EDQ and a couple of camera lenses. Friday Night and Saturday Night were exceptional skies.

I had the chance to pay a visit to a very old friend down in Mosier Oregon on Sunday, and by the time I returned it was like a furnace. The wind came up (as it often does) so I lowered my tripod and parked my truck to block the wind. Was able to shoot some subs of NGC281, but after about an hour I started getting some haze. Switched to dark frames and went to sleep.

I got 4 objects imaged over the weekend(wich was quite a treat) and a bunch of terrestrial photos that I still need to look through. I'll post some of the better results later

I second Ram's assessment. Best sky ever on Saturday. Sunday night, there was a stiff breeze all night. I imaged a single target - the Crescent Nebula over two nights.

Got Luminance and Blue on Saturday. My Subaru provided enough cover to my somewhat squat Atlas that I got some good Red, Green and OIII data on Sunday.

The spacer rings for the field flattener worked really well. Round stars all over the field of view from now on!

The Moonrise this morning was breathtaking with some nice cloud formations and Orion still blazing. Robert tried to get a picture but his camera did not have a wide enough view (looking forward to your other pictures, Robert). I rather like terrestrial clouds but strictly during day time. Cloudy nights only at www.cloudynights.com .

There has been come confusion, my friends are going to a star party near Goldendale, in a field, with a single honey bucket, this weekend; but, it's at Skyview Acres and organized by the Rose City Astronomers... The most confusing part is that the RCA have my name on their list of attendees. What's up with that, do I have a long lost twin?

I'm glad everyone had a good weekend! As usual, I'm fascinated by the images. Although I'm not really competent to express an opinion I'll say, "Very nice!"

My "plan," such as it is, is to head down that way Friday. This is dictated in part by the forecast in this morning's paper, which calls for showers during the week, followed by another nice weekend. I think I'll have the flexibility to stay Sunday night but I'll need to examine my work calendar to verify.

Brad, I think you've answered the eternal question, "How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?"

Indeed it is and yet my place stays constant due to the land management act...which prevents anyone from building on less then 10 acres. Not to mention I have 57 acres of of trees belonging to a paving co. abutting me to the West and thousands of acres belonging to the local watershed to my North.

Thanks Ron And Tom!

Tom- I've been a fan of the basalt features since I was old enough to walk. The Moses Coulee, Dry Falls, Palouse Falls. The floods that carved the features, revealed so much geology as a side effect. A person could spend a lifetime trying to take it all in. The scale and scope is fantastic!

Hi, All,

I really don't know what the rain will do to the ground. I can tell you what the ground is like: (a) when there isn't any rain; (b) after a rainy period but with a week or so to dry out; and (c) after it's rained lots for day after day. (a) is good. (b) is good. (c) is bad. We'll have something between but I don't know what.

I think most *probably* (as opposed to *certainly*) the dry ground will suck water down deep real fast and it will create moist but not soggy soil. But beware: the access "road" isn't a road at all, but rather it was designed to intercept snowmelt and rain moving downhill, in order to prevent erosion. It might well be the soggiest part of all. And the field might be soft enough that all rigs except Stacy's land yacht will be fine but Stacy will need a ride home from someone if he tries the lower field.

I still want to go down Friday but I'm getting hammered at work and that will have to come first. I have an important project that has to get out by the first of next week and I want to take Monday off if at all possible. So depending on how my work on it tomorrow goes I may not leave until Saturday . . . But if you see headlights at 2:00 a.m. Sat., it's probably Pixie & me.

Thank You Stacy, Ram, and Kerry!

Stacy; I've planned on going(although I wavered a little for a slate peak trip) and am still looking to head down to Goldendale this weekend. I might head out late afternoon tomorrow.

EDIT: just checked the weather... friday seems to be a wash(no pun intended) I may have to bow out. One night is a pretty brutal drive(when you consider that with this weeks commute, I've put on 1000 miles in the last 7 days). I'm considering Slate Peak next weekend. The weather is looking better next week(so far)and I may just take all my stuff to work(at Whidbey island) on Monday, then just keep going up Highway 20 when I get off on Thursday night.

*Really* near Lk. Goodwin. Spectacular shot, Robert.

While I won't rule out a late tonight start it's looking most likely Pixie & I'll leave some time tomorrow.

I think I'd like to drive down to a watering hole in Hood River Kerry told me about for the Seahawks game Sunday. Even though its, uh, at 10:00 a.m. I'd welcome similarly inclined idiots, so be thinking about just how important sleep is and whether you might really prefer a good brunch-time meal and a wide-screen TV, followed by a long afternoon nap upon return.

Robert, Pacman came out really well. Excellent work. Love the wide field and colors. Most images I've seen are close ups. That 65 EDQ is a great scope.

So I've worked like mad, to make time to come over to Pixieland this weekend. Hope to stay Sat and Sun.

Getty is a company that stockpiles photos. Some are royalty free but many are fee-based. So if someone writes about a famous person, for example, and wants a photo to accompany the writing, they could go to Getty and get a photo. Same with about any subject: travel, animals, scenery, etc. I see Getty given credit for newspaper and online photos, often of athletes and coaches.

I got some more M33 data and a bit of data on M74. Only my second time imaging a supernova.

I got a pretty weak M33 from down here in the soup, and I still got some work to do on M31(not really happy with it's current state). I wanted to shoot longer subs but with the trees as a limiting factor, I didn't want to just have a few subs.

ended up with 16 X 5 minutes of M33

Nice processing....Yeah it was soup here last night too.
It began to dew heavily at around 11:30 and gt worse as the evening progressed. Man I had to wipe off the objective of the 10"f/15 at around 12:00...just to be able to see. By 4 oclock when I was waiting to view Jupiter and mars..the scope and mount was dripping like a river...I aimed the scope high and the water ran off like a sure river onto my face. Good Lord. The at about 4:40 the marine air and clouds came in and wrecked everything.....We were done.

I spend a good portion viewing Uranus last night and Neptune. I never seen them through the 10"...sweet.

I got to view till the clouds shut me down at 4:40...so I got in some good EP time.

Anybody else...have any adventures to share. Plus there was a fire up the road and about 2:00 there was some smoke settling low..because of the drastic humidity.

Rob

I had crazy fog in the morning and was wiping everything down as I was taking flats.
The humidity levels were insane through the night. My dew heater was going really hard!
But the seeing was really nice. I hope to have a nice result at the end of this.

I was up at Hurricane Ridge Saturday night with some fellow OAS folks. It was excellent viewing. We had some dew threats but about the time I noticed the dew, it would dry up again. We were up until 0430, what a great night. I hope all went well at Pixieland my friends.

Yeah..the fog crept in fast after 4:00 am.

Still..if everything goes well and we move to Texas..the 12% humidity will be nice instead of this crazy 89% stuff.

Pixieland was a bit of a wash on Sat night, my only night there. I had big plans to view in some areas to the SE that I have not yet explored, but moving clouds persisted most of the night, and by 3:30 am it was complete overcast. I'm guessing Sunday night was awesome as the high-pressure was suppose to settle in by then. I did enjoy some Milky Way time early in the evening, when we had only about 25% cloud cover.

Thanks again to Mike for the great site, and thank you Brad for arranging the Honey Bucket.

Very sorry to those that were talking to me but I did not respond. I was wearing a cap, and a wool hooded coat, and the wind blowing created a situation where I couldn't make out words, just heard murmuring...

Was also great to see Stacey, Ajay & Rob - hope to see you guys again next spring!

Yes, Orion looked almost 3D in your scope Stacy!! I think everything we looked at last night looked exceptional!!
Mike had an tremendous amount of detail of M33 in Sugaree.
Amazing spiral arms and knots of gas.
We turned in about 4:30am.
I spent the majority of my time giving the new Nikon 8x42 Prostaff 7's a workout. These will be keepers!! We got some great comparisons with a couple of Stacy's bino's and Mikes Canon IS bino's.

Ajay was wondering if I caught the jet passing under the Moon.
This was prime focus through the 120ST.

I think everyone had a fine time at P/land over the weekend.

I felt bad that Steve had to go home to his out-of-town visitors after just one night. You're a hero for making the trip down!

Saturday night was disappointing astronomically, thanks to thin, pesky clouds that would tease us with brilliantly clear sucker holes. But as said, we had a fine, convivial time flaked back in our lounge-lizard chairs, passing binocs back and forth. And it allowed a couple hours more sleep than expected.

I had a much more sane Sunday morning than initially envisioned. Instead of leaving for Hood River around 8:30 to watch the football game I slept in, then enjoyed the morning mountains with coffee in hand. Stacy and I wandered into G/dale and into the Top Hat just as the third quarter of the Seahawks game was getting under way. It was a scene out of a David Lynch movie, with retired cowboys and farmers at the bar, wizened bartender with a cigarette tucked behind her ear, tiny TV up high on a cabinet and sultry Naomi beckoning us to her table. Only one beverage was right for a place like that, and I thank Stacy for taking care of tequila duties for both of us. Mr. Tequila and I have a kind of stand-off relationship.

Sunday night was very good. The transparency slipped toward mediocre but the seeing was excellent. As Ron said, I spent some time viewing M33, which appeared rich and diverse.

I was the last to leave yesterday. Ajay stayed to capture some more photons to complete his Pelican image. He was excited about some time exposures he was playing with Sunday night while his imaging setup ground on, and I expect we'll see some pretty cool pictures from him.

I drove home via Hwy 410, which I haven't traversed in several years. Gosh, that's a scenic drive! (It also currently features about 20 miles of 35 mph construction, happily not active when I traveled through.)

Thanks for posting the pictures, Ron!

Ron - those moon pictures are awesome!

Mike - I had a wonderful time, and yes really wish I had been there Sunday night. I long to view the Orion area while not freezing my but off. Maybe next month I can take a trip to the Cle Elum area for an all-nighter.

Great shots Ron! Also, thanks for saving the night by having an extra power tank I could use when mine died .

Another great Pixieland weekend. And Pixie herself is looking fantastic! Thanks again Mike.

Boy that Asher really knows how to live. I appreciate him letting me stay at his place.

Stacy

Thanks guys, really love sharing my pics.
It was great meeting Brad and Steve and seeing Mike, Stacy and Ajay again.
Mike you have a little piece of heaven there, thank you for sharing!!
You are an entertaining and gracious host!!
Stacy, that is why I drag the extra power tank along. I don't think I've used it once since getting the deep cycle battery.
Thanks for the delicious grub and the evening libations. The early morning soup was AWESOME!!
It was fun doing the bino shootout.
Can't wait to get a peek through those Prostars.

So I stayed on Monday night and it looked iffy at first. As the night went on, transparency improved till it was very good. Dew was not as bad as Sunday night, but there was some. I got 2.5 hours of H-alpha on the Cave nebula and 2.5 hours of Luminance data on the Pelican. I could have centered the Pelican a little better, but the data looks very promising. In the Pelican, I was tickled to see some finely detailed Herbig-Haro objects that are precursors to stars. Don't hold your breath on seeing these soon. I like to take my time over the winter months to get it processed right. I will post to the PN thread at some point.

Thank you Mike, Brad and Kerry for this fine event.

Ajay

It was good to meet you Ron, and see Mike, Steve, Stacy and Ajay again.

I very much enjoyed observing Sunday night, I viewed many new objects with locating help from Ron.

On Sunday I went over to Skyview Acres on the other side of town to visit a friend from Olympia and a few other imaging nuts courtesy of Rose City Astronomers.

Brad

That's some really beautiful images! Great work.
I'm glad everyone had a good time.
It was quite clear here in Seattle and I got enough data to complete my M33. I will post this probably next week. (Got visitors this week)
