Astro Photography Tool - APT
      #3574349 - 01/21/10 08:21 AM

Hope that this is the right place for this post, because it is a kind of advertisement.

I’m glad to bring to your attention a software tool that can be useful for somebody. It is named “Astro Photography Tool” - APT in short and for now is related only to Canon EOS models. This tool was started only for private use, but I was convinced to give it a public form. This took more than half year of my free time to make it user-friendly and really hope that it will cover at least part of yours expectations for a good software tool and of course that will be useful for you. If there is interest I’ll put more efforts in this undertaking.

So here it is www.astroplace.net

Let me know your thoughts about it! Thank You!!!

Thanks Dan!

I can't test it on 350D, but got one 400D for test from a friend. On 400D with PC shutter cable there were no problems.

Some news from the kitchen The new version is coming soon and will be released around the middle of this month. There are some fixes of annoying bugs in the user interface. I just bought one 350D so will make again tests with this model (it is with Digic II processor) and if I found something it will be fixed.

As a gesture of gratitude to everyone that supported APT, there will be some features available only in the full version. For now the list is not long, but will grow.

-Grey, green and blue skins
-Sound notification when plan is completed
-Selection of the folder where the images to be saved

Very nice work Ivo
Ten min reading instructions for both APT and a new 450D and I was taking test shots with no extra hardware required. The Anti Vibration pause will eliminate one of my biggest issues and the live view mode is a huge help.

Hi,
I just bought your APT program. I'm running windows 7 starter. Where are my images being stored in my computer? What is the path? I tried going to your tools and typing in a new images path (C:\Users\Davio\Desktop) but the image isn't on my desk top after I run an exposure test. Where are they being stored?

Is there anyway to adjust the size of the program, make it a little smaller on my screen? I'm using this on a 10" mini computer screen.

Davio R.

Hi Davio,

Thank you for purchasing APT! On your desktop you have to have folder named "Camera_1" and in it "2010-06-19". There the images are stored. If you use two cameras in same time then you will have second folder "Camera_2" and again sub-folder with the current date as name.

What is the problem with program size? Isn't it starts on the full screen?

Hi Ivo,
1. Thank you for your reply. Where are the images being stored now without the Camera_1. folder and sub folder on my computer?

Can you please provide me with the exact Desktop/ folders Path? ie. C:\xxxxx\xxxxx\Desktop\xxxxx\xxxx for Windows 7 Starter 32 bit. Is it C:\Users\Davio\Desktop\Camera_1\2010-6-20?

Do I have to make a new subfolder on the different days I'm using the program?

2. The program fits my entire screen and I can't resize it to the size I want. In the upper right hand corner there is minimize icon (-) and an exit icon (x) but no little box in between to resize the program. If you incorporated that I can run your program and my PHD guiding program side by size on the same screen (10").

P.S. I love your program. However, it crashes a bit with Windows 7 Starter 32 bit. Your tool is the kind of thing that really makes things easier in the field, at night. The focusing portion alone is worth the expenditure. You should be very proud of your work.

Davio R.

Hi Davio,

"Camera_1" and "2010-06-10" folders are created automatically. If you entered in the settings dialog the path "C:\Users\Davio\Desktop\" then the full path to the images will be "C:\Users\Davio\Desktop\Camera_1\2010-6-20"

APT works in two modes - fulls screen and minimized. When it is minimized there is floating window that you can use to monitor the current APT state while you are using other programs.

What are the problems under Win 7 starter? There was one under Win 7 64 bits, but it was resolved in the latest version. Thank you for the kind words!

Special Note: This program IS highly functional and does the job. These comments and my problems are stated to improve a great program on the various Windows OS platforms. I highly recommend this software and supporting Ivo as he refines this software. Buy it, you'll be glad you did. Great job Ivo!

Hi Ivo,
Did exactly what you said with Desktop path. It does not save to the computer nor are Camera_1 or subfiles created. After an experimental exposure run last "View Last" image is there but if you click on it again the monitor screen goes blank (which I can see happening). Image Dest: works in camera mode and camera + PC mode (saves just to the camera). Not in PC mode only. My simple path to my desktop is C:\Users\Davio\Desktop\ .Please keep me posted should you figure this out.

What are the problems under Win 7 starter? There was one under Win 7 64 bits, but it was resolved in the latest version. Thank you for the kind words!

The program crashes periodically.

This is a great product. Was a no brainer to buy it. I've got it doing a dark frame library run right now on my 450D: different exposure lengths and different ISOs. Also some of the best red-light/dark adaptation I've seen.

It does exactly what I needed a program to do....control the camera and automate the exposure runs.

Can't wait for the next version.

I'm sorry to say it, but just found that the new automatic mirror lock enabling/disabling feature is provoking problems especially with Digic 4 cameras (500D and 550D for sure)

While the new version 1.10 is done, a fix for the unregistered version can be found here. http://www.ideiki.com/astro/Beta.zip

All registered users can contact me at any time and will send them the fix for the registered version.

A lot of apologies for the inconvenience!!!

Since this version there is small change in the version numbering – 1.10, 1.20 and any version with last digit “0” will mark the current stable version. Numbers like 1.11, 1.12 where the last digit is not “0” will mark the beta versions. The site will be updated to allow downloading registered and unregistered beta versions. I hope that there will be interest to try the new features and to help to test APT with more EOS models and to make it better. I want to say big “Thank you!” to everybody that were and are helping so far!

On the home page are listed some of the planned features for v1.20. There will be a focus on polishing the things we already have, but there will be some new things too On first place the extraction of the EXIF temperature data.

Please let me this link again. It is the Yahoo group related to APT - http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/astroplace/

And last, this Saturday I’ll be out of the town so will be slow on responses. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The site is updated with version 1.32. It contains a fix of a problem when Digic III camera is used with serial cable.

There is no need to update your APT 1.30 if you use other camera or you don't use serial cable.

On the Download page you can get the latest Tooltips in English. Corrected are some typos.

I apologize for the inconvenience!

Ivo, I have a question about the 550D Video. I just purchased this last week and was wondering about the video on the 550d. when I switch it to video the live view function comes on, will I be able to view this on the APT program? and watch my live view on my laptop or broadcast it for others to view. Excellent product, works well with my 450D

Thanks

Hello Mittag56,

You have freedom to make calculations of the objects scale for any object size, focal length and camera combination even in the demo version.

In the full version there is a catalog of 545 objects to speed up these calculations and to help in objects framing.

Regards,
Ivo

Hello,

On the site you can find a new "beta" version that contains 95% of the things that will come in 1.60. In "Download" page you can find a link "Download beta version".

From Tuesday I'll be on vacation and will not work on APT till am back, so decided to release what I have. The window resizing is not finished and because of that is disabled, there is need to clean some UI bits, to update the tooltips and User's guide, but they will wait till I'm back. The version looks stable, but will suggest you to have a copy of the 1.53 setup in case there are problems

I'll check the mail every day so will be able to respond to all questions

Here are the list of changes and some notes:

- New User Interface. APT has a new look All features are grouped in three tabs Camera, Telescope and Tools. There are no more buttons with icons. Also there is different look for 4:3 and wide screens that gives optimal size of the preview.
- Dropdown lists have scroll-bars that can be used with mouse.
- Shoot button can be used for Bulb exposures. In this mode the anti-vibration pause and long exposure control settings are in use.
- Reminder to put on/off the telescope cap when you switch between Dark/Bias and Light/Flat plans.
- Reminder that Virtual long exposure control and Digic 3 camera combination will lead to amp glow.
- Image browser (in demo version you can't change the folder). You can preview images and use them to build Framing Mask. When you shoot in RAW+L the browser will show only the JPG file because it is faster. If there is no JPG then RAW file will be displayed.
- The images folder will not be changed after midnight.
- The default images folder now is C:\APT_Images\Camera_1. (in the demo version it can't be changed).
- Fixed it the @@@ bug in file naming.
- LiveView automation now uses 30s as exposure time.
- AutoStar section now has Up and Down buttons (full version only).
- Camera status in main window now shows Current/Remaining count during plan execution.
- Camera auto-connection on startup. If the camera is on it will be connected automatically.
- Other small enhancements and fixes.

I'll be very thankful to hear your feedback, opinions and suggestions!

What is 170+ for 2?

The answer is - the number of the major features added in APT for two years.

Yes, it is true! Since January 2010, APT got more than 170 new major features and many minor one. If you doubt take a look on the History page (the link below). Even more details - 90+ are added in 2011. And this is not the end. I will try to add more than 100 new in 2012.

Compare these numbers with the price - 12.70 EUR... I think that it is a fair one. How often you see such prices in the astro hobby?

The work on enhancing the text and audio information in the Object Browser (now available in Demo version too) is in continuous progress, so everybody can download the part that want from the Downloads page in the APT's site.

The latest news are:
-There is a new version of the text version with some changes in the existing information.
-There is a new audio pack - Caldwel objects.
-Updated is the "full" audio pack. It includes 358 objects now.

Many thanks to Jeff Seivert for his hard work!

The beta 1.94 is available on the site Note that CCD support is not included in it!

Here is the list if changes:

- Darkness Clock - shows the Sun and Moon set/rise, Nautical and Astro twilights. The clock shows the things from "nigh" point of view - most nights start in one day and ends in other Also there is a maker that shows the current time and flashes when there is approaching event in the next 15 minutes. The left end is 12:00 at mid day of the day in which the night starts/started. The right end is 12:00 at mid day of the day in which the night ends.

- Deep Space Darkness calculator. It shows the exact times for all tracked events. Calculates the 'Deep Space Darkness' - the time when the sky is dark and Moon is not above the horizon. You can see the values for any date - input a date and hit 'Enter' key to recalculate or use Prev/Next buttons. Also you can search for the next night with at least X hours of DSD time, starting from the selected night

- Settings dialog is reworked to use tabs and there is new one - location. You can enter coordinates in the format +/-XX.XXXXX. APT will convert them in to readable form

- When PHD dithering is On, APT will check on every plan start if there is connection to PHD and will attempt to make connection if it is not available.

- Object calculator DB is extended with the new models - 5D Mk III, 1Dx and 60Da

- Recalc button will switch on the object scale mode of the 'Target' button.

- 1100D model has no native mirror lock function. APT is updated to support LiveView simulation for this model.

- Some UI enhancements.

Please keep a copy of the official version in case something with this beta goes wrong...

As usual I'll be more than happy to hear your opinions and suggestions!

There is a new beta - 1.95 that adds support for the models 5D MkIII and 1D-X. The new version of the Canon's communication library states that it adds support for 60Da, but I don't see any changes here and also have confirmation that the current official version works fine with that model...

There are few fixes in the Darkness clock and Calculator.

The CCD functionality is not fully finished yet, so it is not included. If there are no changes in the plans the beta 1.96 will be published in Friday for initial tests with real CCDs.

Question - if it goes to version 2 within a year of purchase, is that going to be an extra cost to upgrade?

Just to note that active development of 2.00 is resumed

I had a very busy summer - hard time in the office, vacations, imaging sessions and so on, but APT development never stopped completely. There was a serious mail communication with many APT friends. As a result various small issues and suggestions are addressed in the DSLR part.

Things are getting back to normal and am working on APT on daily basis again, so soon will have a new beta version that contains the improvements so far and better CCD part.

Thank you for your patience and support!

APT 2.00 is coming very very soon! But I need your help by making final tests with real CCDs. The details can be found here: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Astroplace/message/2363

Two more announcements:

- When APT 2.00 is released all active licenses will be extended with 6 months to compensate the long development time of this significant upgrade of APT

- As usual there will no pricing changes or surprises! APT 2.00 price will be still 12.70 euro for the first year and 6 euro for renewal no matter when.... But now you have a chance to get a bonus by getting your license before the launch.

Thank you in advance for your help and support!

The beta version 2.05 is available now The weather here is bad and will be very thankful to hear your feedback, suggestions and ideas!

In short the changes are:
- Bahtinov Aid - works with LiveView and Images in both EOS and CCD mode. It is an incorporation of the Bahtinov Grabber technology into APT
- Canon's library 2.12 integration - 6D and 1D-C are supported now
- Fixed is a bug in turning CCD cooler to OFF
- Fixed is a bug for QHY9
- Some minor CCD fixes
- Some minor tweaks here and there

For the full version:
- Framing masks are upgraded to work with LiveView
- ASCOM focusers with temperature sensor now acts as Temper sensor and can be used, to monitor the ambient temperature, to store the reading as part of the name, to get notifications for refocusing.

There are some changes in the installer program, so take a look if everything is fine there too

Looking forward to see your comments!

The newest version of APT – 2.10 is available. The main addition is the Bahtinov Aid panel. It gives possibility to analyze the diffraction spikes from Bahtinov masks and to tune the focus on sub-pixel level. All this becomes possible thank to Neils Noordhoek and his project Bahtinov Grabber. With deep sorrow I learned that Neils passed away before he can see the result of our cooperation. Thank you Neils for all that you shared with our community!

The list of the other changes is below.

2013/02/12 - v.2.10 New features and bug fixes
-Added: Bahtinov Aid - works with LiveView and Images in both EOS and CCD mode
-Added: Canon's library 2.12 integration - 6D and 1D-C are supported now
-Added: Framing masks are upgraded to work with LiveView (full version only)
-Added: ASCOM focusers with temperature sensor now acts as Temper sensor and can be used, to monitor the ambient temperature and etc.
-Fixed: A bug in turning CCD cooler to OFF
-Fixed: A bug for QHY9
-Fixed: A bug when AstroTortilla calls APT in CCD mode
-Fixed: A bug in the scroll when APT is in window mode (not maximized)
-Fixed: A bug in CCD mode, that doesn't allow to make Bias frames
-Fixed: Some minor CCD fixes
-Fixed: Some minor tweaks here and there

The next version is planned to address as much as possible of the already requested features. It is scheduled for the early March.

Don’t be shy and share your images in the APT’s gallery

Ivo, I just read with interest how you incorporated the Biula Audio Trigger into your app. My laptop has 3 USB ports so I don't need the audio cable to control my shutter but I would like a less expensive alternative than the Shoestring adaptor to control mirror lockup. Can the Biula Audio trigger be redesigned to control only the lockup function through the 3 pin port on the camera?

Hi Charles,

I'm not a guru in this area, but looks that you only have to map the stereo jack to the 3 pins and it should work fine

Just for the records to mention that all Digic 4 cameras don't require additional cable.

APT can control the true mirror locking only with the provided USB cable

Hi I have a question regarding APT v2.2 (full version). I have got it installed great and with my canon 1100d not a problem but when I connect my scope I strike a few problems. I have the latest Ascom drivers v6sp2. I can connect to the scope and it picks up that it is a Celestron AVX mount no problems but when I go to slew or sync or Goto I get the error “Cannot slew to coordinates. Exception occurred".
I run the Ascom diag with no problems any ideas.

Paul

I have been using v2.10 without any problems using my canon T1i (hooked up with USB cable and serial shutter cable running windows 7)decided to upgrade to v2.31 and now when taking a image the shutter opens but when the timer hits 0 it dosent release just stays open till I hit the stop button. any ideas on what might be wrong? also uninstalled v2.31 and went back to v2.10 and everything worked right.

Robert

Hi Robert,

I'll investigate what is going on, but why do you use serial cable? APT can control all functions of T1i without it.

Just purchased APT and I have not had a chance to use it yet but based upon my initial screen of the program I AM AMAZED. I plan on trying APT out over the next few weeks. I have a C8SE with a T3i and few other toys attached. My goal is complete remote access and control on the telescope. Currently I am remote controlling using a 65 foot USB setup but I may go Ethernet or wireless. Still getting the tools for remote focus control in place.

Happy Holidays to all.

Hi Yoddha. I have just purchased the software and I have a question:
- Basically I'm working on 3 PC's: my home PC, my laptop for astro imaging and also I have access to a little observatory with QHY8L camera. My question would be: where are the configuration files of the software or is there an easy way to save settings from one PC to another. For example my home PC is my main processing PC (it's a powerhouse), and I would love to plan ahead my night for my laptop to use with a 1100D or for the QHY8L at the observatory, and than to save my plans to a USB drive to transfer the plan settings to my laptop from my main PC. Is such thing somehow possible?

Hi MrMxyzptlk,

Thank you for your support!

Almost all settings are stored in the file APT.xml located in :

"c:\Users\[your_user_name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Astro Photography Tool - APT\APT.xml"

In the XP era it was easier because the file was placed in the folder where APT is installed. In the next version or two will make an "user interface" to import/export all the settings Till then you have to copy the file manually

Happy holidays!

I think I have found a bug. (or a feature? ) )
I made a plan with 30 frames. I became surprised when I saw only after 15 passes the session was over. I was using the option save images to PC + Camera. When I took a look in the save folder I have seen that there are 30 captures named like this:
image001.cr2
image001(1).cr2
image002.cr2
image002(1).cr2
etc
When I switched the options and saved only to the PC the 30 passes were done, but if I choose PC+Camera than only half of the passes are done because physically the 30 files are there because of the double save to the PC ... So why the double save to the PC when PC+Camera is selected, and APT why does it think it is finished as only half of the passes were made ...

Happy New Year

Yes, I know about the problem. It is related only to Digic 4 cameras and Cam+PC. I have fixed the issue on Dec 30, but want to make few more test before release it to the site.

The issue comes from a workaround made for Digic 4 because Canon was not allowing to use Cam+PC, but it looks like they have fixed their bug, so I had to remove the workaround...

Hi Yoddha. The upgrade works great, no more doubled images.
The remaining question is: Can we have custom Flat plans? I mean, the auto mode is not always good, I have an electroluminescent panel and with the auto mode I get frequency noise (black bars), so to do correct flats with my panel I must increase the exposition. To do this right now I must make another light plane to compensate, but it would be better if I could change the settings for flats so I get the correct auto generated file name. Keep up the good work, APT is amazing.

Good news

In order to use custom flats please go to Tools tab->Settings->Advanced tab and enable "Advanced Flat Bias plans" By this APT will not use the AV mode for flats. BTW currently am working on Flats Aid that will help to determine the right exposure time

I'm sorry to say that, but the problem is in the Canon drivers There is no 64bits driver for 350D and because of that there is no application that can fully control 350D under 64bits version.

The only known solution is to install a virtual machine with 32 bits version of Windows and to control the camera from there

Is there any chance of getting APT and my 350D with a Win7 64 bit PC connected and working?

I already tried WinXP virtual machine and it didn't seem to make any difference at all.

On Edit.. I see you already answered my deleted question.. After some research I thought the WinXP virtual machine would do it so didn't want to bother you..

Thanks..

Hmmm, strange... Is the XP virtual machine with 32bits version of the operating system?

First make sure that you have installed the APT version for Digic II. If there is still a problem try to install the EOS Utilities. APT contains the needed libraries, but in very rare cases there is need EOS Utilities to help with the driver installation.
