New Astronomics building progress photos
      #4811455 - 09/16/11 05:51 PM Attachment (163 downloads)

Some people have asked how the construction of the new Astronomics building is coming along. I’ve attached some images taken over the past few months that will give you an idea. More will be coming along.

The first image is the start of construction when we started to raise the roof on the second floor. Since we were going to have to put a new roof on the building anyway, we decided to raise the roof by three feet or so to give the 4000+ square foot showroom a more open feeling. If we were going to have the largest showroom in the U. S. (according to all the manufacturers), we might as well have the tallest, too. Glad the weather was dry while this was underway. That hole would make one heck of a leak if it rained.

One wall of what is eventually going to be my office on the second floor. Big window overlooking the street on the left, another window overlooking the town on the far right. We’re saving the old painted advertising signs on the walls. They should clean up nicely when the dust and plaster is removed.

The Arbuckle’s Coffee sign we uncovered on what will be one wall of the showroom. Arbuckle’s Ariosa is the “cowboy coffee” all the chuck wagons carried during the cattle drives in the late 1800s. The “coffee that won the West” is still being produced.

This shot is after a lot of the roof has been replaced on the second floor. It might give you an idea of the size of the showroom area. The showroom will run a little over 80’ from the camera position, which is where some of the offices will be, to the overexposed area in the distance where the roof is off which will be rest rooms, break room, and video production room. The light wells for five of the six skylights we are putting in are visible. The roof has been raised, so you can compare the more open feeling the showroom will have compared to the yet to be raised roof in the previous Arbuckle’s sign shot. The showroom is 50’ wide. More pictures to come in a few days if anyone is interested.

Indeed we are interested!! It's so nice that you are preserving the old signs on the walls; this is history that could not be replaced!

You guys are going to have a fantastic new Astronomics!

This is an earlier shot to give you a little sense of scale of the showroom. That’s 6’3” Michael in the shot.

First floor, looking towards the street. The big hole is the bottom of what will be the elevator shaft. Warehouse is on the first floor (makes no sense to carry big boxes up to a second floor warehouse, only to carry them down later). Showroom is on the second floor, with both stairs and an elevator to get to it. The stairs will wrap around the elevator shaft. It’s a ways up to the second floor, so we expect most people will take the elevator. I know I will.

Second floor showroom again. The big hole in the ceiling is for the top of the elevator shaft. The camera is roughly positioned at the doorway into Michael’s office, which is at one end of the showroom, while the bright area in the distance will be where the rest rooms, break room, and video production room will be located at the opposite end of the show room. Individual offices for Pete, Billy, Tom, etc. will be against the wall to the right. Big showroom space, which will eventually be filled with scopes, mounts, accessories, binoculars, spotting scopes, and more. The piles of lumber on the floor are the old ceiling beams and joists we removed to put the new roof in. They will be split and repurposed in the new building, wrapping the elevator shaft in wood, baseboards, trim, etc. We’ll save the advertising art and as much of the old building as possible.

About 40% of the first floor warehouse space. The 3’6” deep pits with the rebar will be filled with concrete and act as the piers for the steel framework that will support the second floor to meet the city’s 100 pounds per square foot load-bearing requirement for retail space. At least I’ll be confident that my office won’t fall through the floor of the second story. The warehouse will hold pallets stacked two high, giving us a lot of inventory room.

From the back of the warehouse looking towards the front of the building, showing about 40% of the warehouse space. It’s not quite big enough to get lost in, but then again I can get lost in a closet.

Very neat about those old advertisements.

Looks huge, but with a ways to go. Depending on when it's all done, I might be forced to make an additional detour off of I-40 when I drive back to California in December.

They’ve put in the temporary covered walkway out front so they can knock out the cinder blocks that are currently filling up the second floor office windows. Then they will install windows up there to bring light into the offices and showroom.

A lot of progress has been made from when I saw the first photos after you bought the building. I like the old wall paintings/advertiisements as well.

You will have to have a grand opening party/sale when the time comes.

Looking up where the elevator shaft will be. One of the skylight openings on the right (temporarily covered to keep out the rain). This is centered over one of the landings for the staircase. The raised area at the left (partially cover by the framing) is where the top of the eight person capacity elevator will fit.

The elevator is primarily a people mover up to the showroom, although it will occasionally be used to get new scopes upstairs to put on display in the showroom. Since the warehouse is on the first floor, and we will load new scopes for people through the front door or through one of the two loading bays in the back, the conveyor belt became redundant. For structural reasons, it would be more expemsive to keep it than to eliminate it, so it reluctantly has to go. (I kind of like it, but Michael told me I couldn't ride it up and down for grins when I needed a break from work.) Know anybody who wants to buy a conveyor belt in good working order?

The new building used to be an appliance store, as well. Before that, an OTASCO (Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company). Both of them kept inventory on the second floor and used the conveyor belt to get washers, dryers, TVs, tires, batteries, etc. down to the first floor showrooms. That's also why there is a two-entrance garage in the back with a hydraulic car lift still in the floor from when they put new tires on cars at OTASCO. Unfortunately, the car lift is non-functioning or I could have ridden that up and down for grins during my breaks in addition to riding the converyor belt.

We gave some thought to putting one at the very front of the building so you could see it from the street, but it's not in the cards right now. In any case, it would need one heck of a pier from the roof down to bedrock just to support my Astroscan.

We're hoping for construction completion in late November (delayed from the originally-scheduled August date the architect gave us, dagnabbit). We probably won't want to do a full move in during the Christmas season, so it will be after the first of the year that the move is complete. That means we'd probably have a grand opening, combined with a manufacturers day or days, after the new product introductions at CES in January. The timetable is very iffy at this time, so don't make plans. We'll let people know a long way ahead of time when things are finalized. Thanks for your interest. We're doing our best to make the new location a place worth visiting.

Don't think restoring the sign alone qualifies, but we are looking into the grant issue because we are restoring a building in the Norman Downtown Historical District close to its original exterior form.

Great view of the Sooner Theatre! And if you look to the right instead of the left, there's McNellie's, so you are well-situated in the coolest block in Norman. And Tom can walk to city hall from his office!

It's great that you and your family chose to be a key part of the renovation of downtown Norman. This area is chock full of fascinating history, beautiful architecture, and that still-feels-like-a-small-town charm that makes Norman such a wonderful place to live.

Now if it only had the dark skies of New Mexico!

Do I win a free trip to the Grand Opening for spotting the Monty Python reference (Cheese Shop sketch) a couple of posts back? That is a competition, right?

Loving what you are doing to the place; history preserved is so important.

Why all these questions? Is this some sort of Spanish Inquisition?

That is soooo wonderful that you are opening the windows back up. I hate to see old buildings with their windows bricked up. The efficient use of natural light was so important to the design of these structures. That alone should help you with a grant application. Congratulations on the new building!

Elevator shaft coming up through the second floor. The temporary railing in front of the shaft is to keep people from falling down into the future location of the stairs. They will end even with the front of the elevator shaft, which opens to the left in the image. The temporary 8" x 8” wood columns holding up the central beam will go, replaced by a few smaller steel columns. There was a wall at one time in the past where the center beam is located, as our new location was once two stores wide. The sprinkler pipes are too low and will be raised to the level of the new beams.

If you go back a few images, there is a side view of the elevator shaft showing the start of the stairs that wrap around the shaft. This image shows where the stairs will pass behind the elevator shaft after they make the first turn to go upstairs. Now, just imagine being on the first landing and looking up and seeing a fully-mounted 7” Questar above you at the top of the stairwell as your introduction to the Astronomics showroom. That should make some visitors happy.

The stairs look narrow, but they are actually fairly wide, as that skylight visible at the top of the image is close to 30’ above this ground floor vantage point.

The second floor exterior, taken from the roof of the one-story office east of us. A lot of pointing and tucking of the brickwork to be done. Luckily there's a two story building west of us, so we don't have to worry about attending to the mortar between every brick on that side.

All four second floor double windows at the front of the building should be in by this afternoon, 10/26, as well as the three second floor windows on the east side of the showroom. At least we'll be in the dry if the weather turns wet and cold. No more plywood and plastic sheeting covering the holes in the front and sides of the building.

For those interested, here's an image of East Main in Norman in the 1950s. Our new showroom is the double-wide building with the lamp post in front of it on the right side of the image, just past "The Booterie" shoe store with its Florsheim Shoes sign. You can see the four double windows on the second floor that were filled in with cinder blocks some time after this image was taken. We have opened them up again with the new windows shown being installed in the previous post.

The side windows are in place, too. They are so clean you can hardly tell they are there. The building has been deafening the last few days, what with the workers’ boom boxes booming, steel being unloaded and dropped on the concrete floor, the fork lift lifting, the crackle of arc welding, nail guns banging, the pained cries of the owner as he gets yet another bill to pay . . .

Lighting starting to go in. There will be 114 floodlights in the showroom alone, to give you another idea of the size of the place. They will be on dimmers so we can balance the indoor light against the light from the windows and skylights. The coax cable draped under the beams will be rerouted through knockouts in the beams and painted black so they won’t be seen. Michael on the left; our GC Nate on the right.

My office, in the center between the elevator shaft and stairwell on the left and the preserved advertising signs on the right, has been reframed with large transom windows on two sides to let the natural light from the windows to the outside world in my office flood into the showroom. The transom windows will help keep my choice in background music from flooding into the showroom as well.

Hey I recognize that downtown area! McNellies will be a great place to grab lunch or drinks if things are going slow at the office.

I was in Norman from 2005-2010 for school, now back in Tulsa for more school. I'll have to come drool on the showroom floor when everything is completed. Looks like it's going to be awesome!

The stairs that wrap around the elevator shaft are in, waiting for the stair treads to be finished and the reclaimed wood from the roof supports we took down to be applied as facing on the stairs and elevator shaft. No point in finishing the treads while workers and nosy owners are traipsing up and down the new stairs and making a mess of them.

Michael looking over the showroom area now that the multiple “measure once/cut twice” wood roof supports have been removed to open up the area, leaving the only three steel support columns. The framing being done in the back left is where a second set of stairs for a fire exit will be located.

Steel going up for the storefront. This will be the recessed double door entry. The narrow steel-framed section to the right will be a side window into one of the two display windows visible from the street. The narrow steel-framed section above the double door entry will be windows to let light flood into the lobby.

More steel for the storefront. The steel-framed section to the left will be one of the display windows. The current blue column will be encased in brick. The narrow steel-framed section to the right is another window into the display area. We will have a mix of old scopes and new scopes on display and visible from the street. Old scopes will include a 4” Unitron that has been brass-plated (it’s a mascot that anyone who has been in our office has seen on display); an ‘80s vintage orange tube C8; maybe even my 1979 vintage Edmund Astroscan, and who knows what else. How’s that for a colorful display? Brass, orange, and fire engine red scopes. The narrow steel-framed section above the display window will again be windows, this time to let passersby see the three three-pendant Bocci light chandeliers per window that will illuminate the displays.

If you sand down the original flooring in the second floor showroom to get rid of the grey grime of ages and put a protective coating on it, this is the wood color and grain you get. I’m glad we are going to be reusing the original floor, instead of bland new snap-together wood flooring on top of the original wood. Now we just have to sand down and refinish all 6000 square feet of the second floor.

The 4000 square foot second floor showroom. It looks bigger now than it did a month ago, with the debris removed. The wood beams that were stacked up to the right that we are going to repurpose as trim have been moved downstairs to the warehouse. They can be refinished and cut to size there without messing up the second story floor refinishing work.

It is going to be a building all of you can be very proud of; and trust me, all of CN will also be proud. It's wonderful to preserve the old brick, bring back that beautiful flooring; rather than destroy & replace with new, that would not have the beauty of the old.

Good talking with you today, Fred!

No, but we still have the safe room in our present building. It's only about 5-8 minutes from most of our homes, about 50% closer than the new building, and the current plan is to keep the 13 year old current building for the foreseeable future.

We will probably have a soft opening while we work the kinks out of operating procedures and such, what with the warehouse and shipping being on a different floor than the showroom. We will then probably have an official grand opening later on with manufacturer's reps and such. We are planning on manufacturer's days and new product demos on a regular basis.

Our GC told us there would be essentially no construction done in the week between Christmas and New Years and the week thereafter. Boy, was he right! At least construction didn't go backwards. I was kind of looking forward to not falling over in a heap from old age before they finished the building, but that's looking less and less like likely.

In our last image, I showed the elevator car shell installed. Here is the progress since then. Entry and dual opening doors have been installed on the first floor and the elevator car raised between floors (part of the underside of the elevator car is visible at the top of the entry, between the two open exterior doors).

Here’s the elevator entrance on the second (showroom) floor. The two side opening exterior doors are closed and you can see the top of the elevator (with its interior doors closed) in the shaft behind the doors.

Otherwise, not a lot of forward progress during this construction hiatus. Rats.

The elevator shaft masonry work is finished and sheet rocking has started throughout the building. This pic shows the lobby and the filled-in masonry gap around the elevator. You can compare it with the pics immediately above. We start sheathing the elevator shaft in wood and working on finishing the stairway next week.

The sprinkler system control valves in the showroom window. We can't cover it up, so we'll just pretend it's a piece of sculpture. There are several art galleries on the same block as the store, so we can probably get away with calling it a piece of modern art.

Things are progressing, although it's sometimes hard to tell. Baseboards are being installed all around, using the old growth oak beams reclaimed from the roof that we saved when we raised the roof way back when at the start of this thread. We had to pull about 50 pounds of nails from each beam so they wouldn't tear up hands and saw blades.

Work is progressing. Another three decades or so (it seems like) and we'll be ready to move in. Most of the work is being done downstairs . . . sheet rocking, painting, wrapping the exposed new metal support beams in wood and making them look like part of the original building, building the street display windows, etc. Typically 6-8 people working at any one time. This is a pic of the showroom, looking towards the front. Almost time for the doors and windows in the offices in the back and to the left. Then it's refinish the floors, wrap the metal support beams in wood, paint, finish out the sky lights, finish the electrical -- maybe it's going to take four more decades after all.

It is interesting that you are not allowed to put it in its own separate room. I am an architect and we do that all of the time. Of course every jurisdiction has its own rules.

You may remember the three 6" square metal supports running down the center of the showroom 8 posts above. We are encasing them in reclaimed wood, as seen in this image. I think it's an improvement.

The giant fan that is visible in the image (which is the exhaust fan from the garage area when the store was an OTASCO tire and auto supply store before becoming Danny's TV) is being salvaged and mounted on the rear wall of the showroom as a decorative reminder of the store's history.

Nine posts above I mentioned that they were wrapping the metal supports downstairs in wood. This image shows some of the wrapping before the wood (new wood I am sorry to say) is distressed and stained to match the old reclaimed wood to the right that is framing the interior of the entrance doors and transom.

We've wrapped the elevator shaft in wood, distressed, stained, and glazed to look old (we didn't have enough reclaimed wood to wrap the shaft, so new wood had to be used). A 12" wide strip of reclaimed wood will be inset around the base of the shaft to set off the original wood flooring that we are reclaiming. This is on the second floor.

Down on the first floor, the wood-wrapped elevator shaft has been wrapped in plastic to protect it while the lobby is painted, tile is laid, the illuminated-from-within "astronomics" sign is installed on the back wall, etc. We've wrapped one of those pesky metal support pillars in new wood. It will be distressed, stained, and glazed to match the elevator shaft. The railings for the stairs leading upstairs at the left will be constructed from reclaimed wood with panels of tempered glass between the posts. The same will be done at the top of the stairs so that the 3.5" and 7" Questars set up at the top of the stairway will be visible through the glass panels as you climb the stairs.

Still more progress. Stucco has been applied to the front of the building. The blue-painted iron pillars on either side of the recessed entryway will be repainted (although the color is yet to be determined.) The second story brickwork will get a little pointing and tucking where needed and then the sort of flesh-colored pink paint that's on the bricks now will be repainted in a more suitable shade.

The hangy-down thingies in the ceiling (wiring conduits, sprinkler system pipes and hangers, etc.) visible in the previous two images have been painted so that they disappear into the ceiling, as can be seen in this image. The sprinkler system fittings have been left orange to go with the red accessory bar we've built. The bar adds a splash of color against the far wall. The brick wall behind it will be filled with hundreds of eyepieces on open shelves, all on display to handle and drool over.

The front of the building has been painted. We're now waiting for the installation of the sign and exterior lights so we can get rid of the plywood passageway that has protected passersby from falling debris for far too long. It has done its job well. No passersby were harmed in the making of this building.

Here's the benefit of reusing the existing old wood. The grey area of the floor is the floor as we found it, with decades of dirt and wear ground in. After a lot of sanding to get rid of the grime of ages, the original 90 year old wood floor has reappeared and is what you see inside the office cubicle, waiting to be sealed to keep from being regrimed. All of the showroom and office floor will look like it when we get finished.

Funnel was an EF2, tracked just south f Main Street which would be within a few blocks of the new building. Local news here is reporting some home damage but doubtful that either the new or old Astronomics buildings were right in path. Hang on thogh because tomorrow is supposed to be even wilder here in tornado alley.

I saw the pictures of devastation along Boyd St, and I was hoping you came through alright. Looks like you dodged an EF2 bullet.

NOAA just called a tornado warning to the west in Caddo County, and that one looks like it's heading east, so you may not be out of the woods yet. Here's hoping you and yours stay safe.

And in these parts, we're expecting snow tomorrow. Never a dull moment, eh?

With no tornado damage to the new building, they put the first coat of polyurethane on the showroom floor. A light sanding to even it out, a second coat, and the floors are done. The old wood floors are looking pretty good. Almost don on the building. Then, the move.

There are LED lights inside to make the cutout white letters glow softly against the black sign face. A timer will shut them off at 11 each night. The diffused glow of the letters is not nearly as obnoxious as the period street lights the city installed several years ago up and down the Main Street historical district, including one right outside the west end of our store.

We probably won't be totally moved in until early June. It depends on how soon the city will give us an occupancy permit after we finish construction (hopefully within the next two weeks). Then we will have 6000 square feet of our present store, offices, and warehouse to move and set up, which will probably take several weeks to complete. So . . . June.

Great, thanks. I'll pop in on my way back through. You should at least be close enough for me to peek in the window and get a pic out front.

I just want to make sure Mom knows where it is so she is prepared for Christmas.

The floors are finished. Here's a view of what will soon be 4000 square feet filled with over 100 telescopes on display. Dusty footprints on the floor from the construction still underway. We'll get rid of them before we open.

The lobby, with illuminated sign (LED lights inside make the letters glow so people looking in at night know who we are, and there is a halo of light on the wall behind and around the sign), wood-wrapped elevator, and stairs. Black tile floor (you can see the construction dust on the tiles which has been tracked upstairs in the earlier picture of the showroom). The base of the column needs to be finished and wrapped in salvaged wood (you can see the lighter color where the base was removed so they could install the tile). Stairs need to be finished -- black treads and black risers.

Bocci pendant lights in the display windows to glow softly and pretty up the display areas at night. There will be a constellation of 28 Bocci lights glowing over the stairway, as well. Still a lot of work to be done in the display areas, as you can see -- painting the walls, covering the horizontal fire system pipe and the insulation above the window, cleaning the windows, etc.

Waiting for the rest of the debris to be cleared out so we can get pallet shelving and such installed in the about 4500-5000 square foot warehouse. Still masonry work to be done on the back wall, installing steel security doors between the garage area and the warehouse, etc. But it's coming along. Not too long before we get to move in.

I like how you guys left that faded sign on the brick wall in tact. The whole place looks really well executed and classy. Are you going to be doing a grend opening celebration or something? Here's a suggestion, close the street down, get the city to turn off the lights and have a star party in fromt of the store.

No new pics today. Four blocks of Main Street are closed down for the annual free three-day Norman Music Festival, including the block our new store is on. 18 stages, 278 individual musical acts of all types (rock, folk, country, classical, you name it), 50,000 total visitors -- 56 last night, 88 today, 134 on Saturday. Deafening fun for all, but no work getting done on the building.

Not much in the way of pics to post. Nothing inherently dramatic in the way of before and after pictures of doorknobs being installed and breakroom sinks being installed and plumbed. We're coming down to the last week or so of trim and touchup work before we can get an occupancy permit from the city and actually start the move.

Here's a shot of the elevator, newly tiled to match the lobby floor. We still can't use it until the city gives the okay. We can pay for it; we just can't use it. Drat!

It's a daytime shot, but you can get an idea of the halo lighting around the illuminated sign at the back of the lobby. This identifies the store to passersby night and day, if the telescopes in the window aren't enough of a giveaway.

Many of the finishing details were ad hoc decisions as the building came together. For example, the look and construction of the railing around the stairway in the post above, as well as in the image in this post, was decided late in the building process. We knew we needed a railing; the look of it was what we were lacking.

The first impulse was for a custom-built stainless steel and glass railing around the stairway whose modern look would contrast with the retro look of the wood-wrapped elevator shaft, the reclaimed original wood floors, and the advertising signs on the wall that we are keeping. Nice idea, and about $20k.

Then the thought came, and I think it was Michael who came up with it (I can't remember, as I've slept since then), that we build the railing ourselves, using more of the original wood ceiling beams we had salvaged when we replaced and raised the roof. We had some excellent carpenters; we had the wood; why not?

The result was an interesting "old" wood railing that did not look out of place with the reclaimed wood floors and advertising signs on the original brick walls. The glass panels in the railing added a little modern touch and allowed people coming up the stairs to see the 7" Questar that will be parked at the top of the stairs. The Bocci-style lights over the stairs will glow like a constellation of stars above the 7" Q. We think the effect will be quite nice. The fact that it cost a lot less than a custom stainless steel railing would have cost was very appealing, too.

Most of the details were developed like that, using as much of the original building components that we had saved to repurpose as possible in order to link the original 1920's building look and feel with the 21st century telescopes.

You may have seen the barren pallet rack image on the previous page. Here's a newer image -- before the two days of a four-person moving company crew moving small item shelving and a lot of the 2500+ SKUs we have to sort and stack. Most of what you see on the racks was moved by Michael, working until 11:30 or midnight every night for the past week, with help from Adam during the day.

The showroom floor as of this morning. Only part of the display scopes have been moved upstairs. With over 100 scopes to set up (say an hour each on average to open, assemble, position, and repack and store the shipping cartons), plus trying to get the offices sorted out and the business running smoothly again, it is unfortunately going to be a while before there are pretty pictures of the completely stocked display floor to show.

I hope that is an optical illusion, the one light looks like I would brain myself on it coming up the steps

Fred, those lights are so beautiful!

Wow! It's hard to imagine all the work it is moving all that stock, & getting the showroom setup!

Even through a photo, that lighting evokes the feeling of entering a field of stars.

Very nice.

Fear not. The lowest lamps are a minimum of 8' above the steps.

Just when you think there is light at the end of the tunnel someone ordered more tunnel.

Usually I've found that the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train.

About a quarter of the scopes opened and set up. They still have to be staged for the most effective presentation and traffic flow. At least the cartons are getting cleared out so you can see the floor again.

I like the way you provided collimation light sources through out the store so one can collimate their scope right where it sits.

You know, it appears to me those darn legs are just begging to trip folks. If there was a cheap pad, rod and flag or orange ball like you used to see on the old car radio antennes to herd folks away from them - it would look a bit *BLEEP* but it may save a scope or two. Dang, what to do. Or have you found that to be a non-issue?

May need loaner drool towels at the front door for folks to borrow as they wander the floor.

That'll be a nice showroom for you. What are those two mounts in the very front? Are those new versions or prototypes of a new heavier duty Voyager?

I can't say right now, but those are Explore Scientific refractors on those mounts (hint, hint).

We're working on the problem. We're thinking of a sign on each scope that says "If you break it, you bought it."

A view up the stairway towards the Questar 7" and 3.5" that greets those brave enough to climb the 26 steps. A 12" Meade LX200 in the background.

A view of the progress opening scopes to date. About 60 opened, another 50 to go. A partial lineup of Explore Scientific in the foreground, partial lineups of Meade and Celestron in the background. Starter scopes line the wall in the background. Still working on the final layout when we get all the scopes set up. Then it's time to work on the eyepiece wall with over 200 eyepieces on display. Then on to the binocular and spotting scope display areas, with the the microscope and weather station areas bringing up the rear. Lots of work still to be done.

Another view. Meade in the foreground; a 14" EdgeHD on a CGE Pro mount in the background with a row of other Celestrons around the wood-wrapped post. Some SkyWatcher refractors and Dobs in the background; with all the TeleVue refractors on TelePod, Panoramic, and Gibraltar mounts in the distance. Stlll more to come in the coming weeks.
