Why would you select a Hubble UL16? The UL16 is a perfect balance between a telescope with huge light-gathering capability and unbeatable portability. It will be the telescope that gets taken out of the garage or from the back of a car to be used frequently. It will provide stunning views of the heavens and a lifetime of observing enjoyment.
Hubble UL series has been designed to be as light and compact as possible, making the task of transport to your favorite dark-sky site as easy as possible. The heaviest component of the UL16 is the primary mirror, which weighs in at about 25 pounds, and the entire telescope is only about 60 pounds, which is remarkably light for a 16-inch telescope. In addition, with its fast focal ratio mirror, the Hubble UL16 telescope has an eyepiece location that can almost always be reached when you are standing with both feet on the ground (only 67" from the ground when the UL16 is pointed at zenith).
With the Hubble UL16, most NGC objects can be found from a dark sky site - they may not be too obvious, but you can chase them down. The Hubble UL16 will reveal the hints of color in bright emission nebula such as the Orion Nebula and some of the brighter planetary nebulae (The Blue Snowball, The Saturn Nebula and others), incredible detail on Jupiter and, using an H-beta filter, a very distinct Horsehead nebula. Results will vary according to observing conditions and other factors. The Hubble UL16 is a telescope that can provide a lifetime of satisfying observing experiences in a 60-pound package!

Features of the UL16:
Exclusive Sandwich Mirror Technology: Our sandwich mirror technology has been used to manufacture research-grade optical elements and proven by over a half dozen years of successful applications at research facilities such as NASA, California State Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo, for the US Army, and in amateur telescopes around the world. Hubble sandwich mirror’s open core and close back design not only allows air to circulate through the mirror, but also provide the maximum structure strength to allow a simpler mirror cell design. Our sandwich mirror will reach thermal equilibrium up to 10 times faster than a traditional solid 16-inch mirror and means the mirror can deliver great views even as the air around the telescope is changing temperature.
Why is thermal equilibrium so critical? The main issue is "mirror seeing," the turbulence seen through the eyepiece of the telescope when the air above the mirror is different from the mirror itself. Since a sandwich mirror cools far more rapidly than a solid mirror of the same thickness, this major source of distortion is eliminated quickly, giving you sharp and stable views. With ever-changing temperatures during observing or imaging, your thick and solid mirror may never reach equilibrium, and never reach its full optical potential. This is one of the major reasons why our lightweight-sandwich mirror has superior optical performance in real world situations, even without an active cooling system. (Active cooling systems, such as fans, introduce their own problems, such as micro vibration, which may seriously degrade the image quality.) Our sandwich mirrors reach equilibrium extremely fast, and without any external disturbing aid.
Engineered Mirror Support: The UL16 has an extensively modeled and optimized 6-point flotation system that provides more than adequate support for the sandwich mirror. The three-point collimation system is completely independent from the sling lateral support. It will totally eliminate the often-found potato chip astigmatism introduced by sling belt when using the simple 3 pivoted bolts collimation system. In a simple pivoted bolts collimation system, the collimation of the primary mirror may cause the sling belt to pull the mirror axially on the mirror edge, bending the mirror to a potato-chip shape, causing annoying astigmatism.

Features of the UL16:
All Metal Construction: The UL16 mechanical structures have been extensively modeled via 3D CAD and advanced FEA to provide the optimal structure strength and stability. Machined with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology and hand fitted to assure proper fit and finish. Completed with deluxe and environmentally friendly black powder coating, it is such a pleasant to look at, not to mention the enjoyment to look through.
Dual-Speed 2-inch Linear Drive Crayford Focuser: The Hubble UL16 comes with a precision dual-speed, 2-inch diameter focuser. It's a beautiful piece of precision machining that enhances the viewing experience as well as the overall impression of a premium quality instrument you'll have with this telescope. This focuser is robust! It is a zero-backlash "Crayford-style" design further enhanced with modern "linear bearings" meaning you get a rock-solid, super smooth focusing experience that can handle the weight of even the heaviest of modern eyepieces. Its tension, the pressure on the drawtube, is preset to a very reasonable level, but adjustable to lock heavy equipment in place if desired. The smaller brass focus control adjusts focus at a rate 10 times finer than the larger focus wheels. This fine adjustment allows for critical focusing during high power visual observing or for imaging applications. The focuser has 45mm of travel distance.

Hi Ira,
The UL16 is designed to be bottom heavier until a max load of 1.2kg (2.6 lbs) on the focuser, with the shroud installed. Unless you have very heavy load (The weight of heaviest Televue eyepiece, the 2” Ethos 21mm is 2.25 lb), you most likely only need a small counter weight (customer provided) on the secondary cage.
If you do have load heavier than 1.2 kg, then you may need some kind of counter weight (customer provided) loaded to the mirror box at the bottom.
In either case, a few pieces of steel chains, or a sand bag should work well

My concern would be that the shroud does not extend up past the secondary and focuser - one of the places I'd be sure to flock if I wanted the best contrast. No doubt a wonderful scope at a dark sky site, but a problem in the city.

Hi Tong, There have been some comments that the Orion ultralight structure, which is supposedly similar to yours, has issues with the stiffness of the truss frame. Any comments about this? ) Also, are there any plans to possibly make a rigid shroud extending up from the upper collar to above the secondary and focuser? Finally, is it possible to visit your factory in Hong Kong for a hands-on experience? Thanks!

I too would be interested in an answer to this, as flexure could be a problem for collimation. For example, with the scope pointed horizontally and a laser pointer attached to the secondary cage, how much would the laser dot move on a nearby wall when a Nagler 31mm is inserted in the focuser?

I am so sorry for late response. Yes, we will make a secondary baffle later. As for the stiffness, there are two focuser positions. If you use the one which is right on the top of the side truss joint, there will be no collimation shift when scope is pointed from vertical to horizontal. Here is a test report. http://www.astromart.com/articles/article.asp?article_id=852

Great innovation, way to go.
You have a great idea here and it is evident by the current crashing of the astromart site.
A light weight dob is very attractive to a lot of people.
BTW, very attractive introductory price too.

Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your interest in our products. Yes, you should be able to fit Argo navis digital setting circle and a ServoCat without too much effort.
However, you may also consider our own upcoming GoTo system. We will be showing our UL16 GoTo and UL18 GoTo at NEAF later this month.
Thanks,

The professional grade SiTech controller combined with the revolutionary SkySafari will more than double your enjoyment and fun with the Heavens.
http://hubbleoptics.com/GoTo.html
- Professional grade Sidereal Technology controller combined with the revolutionary SkySafari running on iPad, iPhones, iPod Touch, or even an Android device.
- Wireless, touch-screen-based 21st-century GoTo system with tracking capability. You simply touch the star and your scope will move to the right target.
- Skysafari (Pro) features 15.3 million stars, 740,000 galaxies, and 550,000 solar system objects, including all the comets and asteroids ever discovered.
- You can even track a satellite or a comet!
- Point your scope to the NCP or SCP and turn on the power, the scope will start to track precisely. Nothing else, not even a handpad is required; it is as simple as this.
- Superior local search function. A spiral search will either miss sky, or has too much overlapping sky. SiTech local search feature is a series of circles, each larger than the other. It remains a true circle regardless of your altitude or declination. You can pause, reverse, speed up, slow down, during the search, and you have two radius choices, all from the handpad.
- With closed loop encoder feedback drive control, there is no need to worry about drive slippage or wind gusts as the scope will always track precisely.
- Backlash management and compensation is also included.
- With our state of art 10K altitude inclinometer encoder, there is no need to set up the altitude encoder every time you transport your scope.
- Superior and precision servo motors drive system with state of art drive train.
- SiTech has a powerful script feature. You can pan the Lunar terminator using relative pan commands, Pan the Veil Nebula with absolute pans, even write your name with starlight, etc. Making the scripts is as easy as moving your scope (or the virtual scope during the day), and clicking on various options.
- For advanced imagining users, SiTechExe (running on a PC) offers an extremely powerful and unique PointXP telescope modeling software by Dave Rowe. PointXP takes a series of "Calibration Stars" to performs some very complex transformations, Gauss-Jordan, Partial Derivatives; and does a fine job in correcting for many telescope mounting errors and mount flexture and can increase the pointing accuracy by a factor of up to 10!
- SiTech provides the Auto Guider port on an optional wireless handpad receiver. This is an industry standard connector, where you can plug an SBIG or other standard auto-guider. The autoguiding works extremely well, because of the “Equal Area Guiding,” Backlash compensation, and instantaneous corrections. The auto-guider inputs are acted upon within milliseconds. Check out the latest astro photography on www.siderealtechnology.com.
- Built in SiTech ASCOM software support for auto focuser and de-rotator via a second SiTech controller. You will use the “Azimuth” channel of the second SiTech controller
for the focus motor, and the “Altitude” channel of the second controller for a field de-rotator motor.
Interface with any ASCOM Compliant Planetarium programs and telescope control routines inside CCD imaging programs.
- The interface to the following popular Planetarium programs are supported:
Earth Centered Universe (ECU)
TheSky™
Cartes du Ciel
MegaStar
- ARGO NAVIS™ and Sky Commander are supported; but are not required.
- Easy Plug-n-Play self-installation, and No drilling is required! Just tighten a few screws, and you are ready to GOTO. It will likely take more than a few minutes, but it
will NOT be hours or days to install our GOTO system.
- The GoTo package includes: SiTech Dual Servo Telescope Controller I and Wired Handpad; 2 servo motors and gear boxes; all necessary accessories (cables, adapter
plates, screws, etc.); a 10K azimuth encoder and 10K altitude inclinometer; and a Skyfi wireless receiver. The iPad is not included. Please note that if there is no RS232
(serial) port on your computer, then you must have a USB to RS232 Adapter Cable, which is not provided.
$1495 Limited Special Offer with free motors (only when supply lasts).

Thanks Tong, Quick question though. The site mentions that the trusses on the f5 are a 2 piece design. What exactly does that mean and or could you post a picture of the new structure?

Hi Sean,
I am sorry for the late response. It has a bolted extension section, which is very strong.
Thanks,
