Currently the list of major door prizes for the hourly giveaways at our September 29 Grand Opening includes:
a $2300 set of TeleVue Ethos eyepieces in a case,
a Meade LS6-ACF 6" LightSwitch go-to scope,
a Celestron NexStar 8SE 8" go-to scope with accessories,
and, just added today, an SBIG ST-i color CCD camera,
with more door prizes to come.
Our thanks to all the manufacturers who will be helping to make the Astronomics Grand Opening the grandest of them all with their presence and their presents. Hope to see you on the 29th.

Might as well piggyback on this post to ask who is going to the grand opening on the 29th . . . the OKC Astronomy Club and Norman North High School Astronomy students will be participating in a star party in downtown Norman that evening, with some solar viewing during the day. It would be interesting to see how many Cloudy Nights devotees from outside the immediate area are making the trek to Norman for the festivities. Question: where are the star party participants to set up during the day and evening? That block in downtown Norman as fairly narriw sidewalks and two-story buildings, so I assume close by?

There are a few areas by the James Garner statue for set up. Reasonable traffic and access to the sky.

Here's a pic of the area Michael refers to just a few doors west of the showroom. Train station in the left background; James Garner statue out of frame to the right. Plenty of room to set up, but not exactly a dark sky site. Oh, well, the Moon will be full that night anyway. It will be nice and quiet when the trains go by at 50 miles per hour 50 feet away, too.

Boy, you have me wishing I could make the 1000+ mile trip there. I could set up with my refractor out there and then mosy over close to the railroad tracks to see an oncoming train. If you want to bring out the kid in me, get me close to a set of railroad tracks. I also wish I could be up there to get my crack at "winning" the LS 6" or SE 8".

I still plan to be there and may bring a non astronomical friend who is an engineer so may well had to the amount of drool the objects d'art will require safety screens for. For Mike and especially Fred: would there be interest in simple display of a C-8 purchased from Fred by me in December of 1981, as an example of early salel? Facts are I still own it, still use it, still like it. I'll bring it if you are interested. If I do, it will bear a sigh,: Not for Sale or Trade in. Historical purposes only." The latest addition to the list of prizes is a $2000 retail Explore Scientific ES127 5" ED triplet apochromatic refractor. Yummie. I may have to enter the prize drawing myself. Over $10,000 in door prizes being given away at the Astronomics grand opening September 29 from 9am to 6pm.

Alas, the proverbial last minute "thing" has come up and I will not be able to attend. Maybe I can still get to Norman and see the store in a few months. Good luck for a grand grand opening and at least I still have the C-8 I bought at Astronomics back in December, 1981. Still have it, still use it still like it! Clear skies and clean glass, Mike

Not really. The event is just the event. The Manufacturer reps are here all day. Solar observation should be going on all day, weather permitting, and lunar observation will be going on until around 10ish.
Hourly drawings for smaller prizes, then the big guns get drawn for at 5.

Are you opening at the regular 10 a.m. time on Saturday, 9/29? What time will the store close on 9/29, as well. I saw usual hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, just wondering if that still holds for the Grand Opening? Thanks, and looking forward to my first visit to a real bricks and mortar astronomy store!

For those coming by during our grand opening, and who might feel peckish during their visit, attached is a map of the restaurants in our immediate area. Here's a list of the restaurants and their food types:

The map also shows the two main parking lots just west of our store. There is also curbside parking on many of the streets in our area and two large bank/courthouse parking lots within a block or two of us which should be empty on Saturday afternoon.
We'll open at 9am and stay open until 10pm if the weather permits observing in the evening (it's predicted to be cloudy Saturday night, unfortunately).
We'll start hourly drawings for small giveaways, like binoculars and such, at about 11am. The drawings for the Celestron NexStar 8, Explore Scientific ED127, Meade LS6-ACF, and TeleVue Ethos eyepiece giveaways will take place between 5pm and 6pm, so that everyone who comes in all day long has a chance to enter the drawings and win.
You have to attend the grand opening to get a raffle ticket for the drawings, but you don't have to be present to win any of the prizes.
There will be small freebies from Celestron and TeleVue being given away (beanies, Frisbees, etc) while quantities last. Reps from Celestron, Explore Scientific, Lunt, and TeleVue will be on hand to chat and answer questions. Should be a fun day.

Wow, looking at that map I realize I'm much closer than I thought I was. (You Are Here) I may just have to walk over. Oh well, maybe I can talk the wife into a mega drive for the weekend... 1800 miles round trip to attend a store opening that I don't really plan on purchasing anything at... I wonder if that will fly... When I told her about it yesterday she said 'Are We Going To Need The Truck?' LOL

As of now the OKC Astronomy Club and Norman North HS club should have a number of scopes set up in the area designated on the map, although the morning forecast is less than encouraging. Current weather projection is shower early, partial clearing in the afternoon and partly cloudy in the evening, which should allow moon viewing at least. I have not heard anything on this, but I suspect some of the manufacturer reps may be out with the observers allowing some use of new eyepieces (ES 120 anyone?) and there is a theater across the street which will be letting out before 10, plus the usual Main Street dining crowd, so public foot traffic ought to be good through the evening. Look forward to meeting incoming CN folks . . . and we promise not to do anything that would leave permanent marks on anyone in a Texas Longhorn shirt!

Just got to the La Quinta off of Ed Noble Pkwy. Eating at Ihop next door. Then gonna drive by Astronomics to make sure I can get there right. Long drive here, but made an hour longer by the BLEEP traffic in Dallas. Took an hour to drive 30 miles. Ridiculous. But we made it and will be there in the morning. Its almost surreal, especially with all the OU stuff everywhere. Ill stick out like a sore thumb tomorrow tho. Haha.

It was nice seeing some great scopes in person and meeting some neihbors from Texas. Had a great time wondering around the place meeting people I have heard of on here and talking to reps. Thanks for a great event even though the weather didn't really work out and for having this great site.

The weather put a dampner on solar and any ideas of working late but I got the feeling that most folks did not mind it at all; seemed to be having too good of a time to worry about rain (which it seems we need real bad anyway so it's all good).

Hey Matt he got a good picture of you. I know your job lets you get around the country a lot and if you are ever spending the night in the Elk City area pm me or something and you will have a place to star gaze and a scope to use if you don't have yours with you and congrats on the little one on the way.

Unfortunately, no. Local folks for the most part, which is surprising, as we had a good percentage come in from out of state -- Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, Arizona, and more. We had about 600 people come through, based on the number of filled-in prize drawing stubs.

I was wondering, did Astronomics have any of their AT 130 mm refractors on display? I know this scope has been on back order for several months.

We did not. Still waiting on lenses after being told they are almost done, or they are in our hands. I now feel like a total *BLEEP* as they still are not done and we have unintentionally mislead consumers due to promised delivery dates that have never been fulfilled. The only update I have is "pending" from the optical house after months of promises.

Congrats on the new store Michael. My wife and I were in OKC this past Spring for my son's graduation and we had planned to stop in Norman on out way to Dallas to catch a plane, but we were running late. Don't know when I'll get back to check out the new digs but we'll continue to purchase online.
Cheers,

I am definitely going up there to check out the store before the end of October. Might even be able to make it up there October 6th.

Is the lens cell for the AT 130mm triplet a TMB design/clone?
