Gasp...

Thanks for giving us such a good beginners option!

A few questions, (I may have missed this) the camera appears to be available separately, it looks like its a color camera? Also, what is that 4 pin square connector, will that allow for remote control of the menu? Is the BNC to RCA adapter component? Lastly, any idea if miloslick will support this camera?

Very cool, Rock. Typical of your quality offerings.
Add this package to a small goto mount, and I think one would have a great intro to video-assisted astronomy.

I'm a total beginner so...Does this combo come with a separate video screen to see the camera's images or are they viewed on the laptop or both?

Hi Curtis,

Thank you for asking the questions. The New MallinCam Micro is as stated on the website, a 75 Ohms output. It is composite not component. Component will require 3 separate color inputs adding way too much wiring around the scope. Single composite (industry standard) is all what's required.

The New MallinCam Micro is a color camera and can be switched to monochrome through the menu.

The Rear 4 pin connector are for RS 485 for camera control via computer and RS 485. The RS 485 is already built-in the camera but not yet assigned to the rear 4 pin connector. A MallinCam software is being made and should be ready shortly. Miloslick will be next for software.

97% of our poll conducted on the MallinCam Yahoo groups clearly indicated the preference of computer control over a wired keypad.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for the question.

As stated on the website the monitor is user supplied at that price. Many people favor one brand over another for monitor so the choice of monitor will be a user choice.

MallinCam do offer high end LED monitors made for Video Astronomy. All you need is a low cost type LCD , CRT or LED monitor of your choice to get going. The menu of the camera has a selection of CRT and LCD monitor and a large selection of Gamma selection to adapt to any monitor and video capture device such as our own MCV-1.

To view a live image on a computer, you will need a frame grabber such as the MCV-1 we sell for all our video ccd cameras.

Thank You.

Rock, now you're talking! $100 for the camera alone is fantastic news, since it is still quite a jump up to the next level (MC Jr. & Jr. Pro). That's right at Samsung pricing!

Can you confirm if there will be a remote wired keypad or wirelessless trigger option?

Hi,

A GOTO mount you say? Well we are working on that! I had a prototype at this year Telescope show in Canada at AstroCATS in Oakville Ontario. Next year event will be May 3-4 2014 in Burlington Ontario Canada and we will be there with all kinds of new items.

Thank you.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the question.

There will be all sorts of neat little things for the camera. But for now we have the most popular and most demanded feature which is RS 485 via computer control. At the moment the camera is not yet assigned to the RS 485 but its coming. A new software is being made by the same maker of our original software maker Stephane Lalonde. Next, will be Miloslick Software. Anyone purchasing a MallinCam Micro will be able to send it back for upgrade for free when the RS 485 will be finalized. It use the same protocol as the Samsung by the way.

The New MallinCam Micro is certainly breaking price barrier never heard of before. Now we cover from a very beginner's camera all the way to top notch models. There is a MallinCam that fits the bill for any inspiring video ccd astronomer!

Thanks for the info - so the RS485 is all hooked up and ready to go for when you release s/w for the mirco? That's great news!

ADDED - thanks for clarifying your free upgrade program when it's available, again, great news! *my* own request would be for an option to use a wired/wireless controller as outlined below.

Just my opinion with regards to computer control over wired, I suspect there will be user bias within the MC yahoo group; most all are serious about using the MC, and probably use the higher end models, and would most likely tinker with wanting the best images and capturing them - hence a computer would come into play.

With the MC Jr. Pro and your new micro, I would wager most of its use would be live viewing (ie, straight to TV/LCD/Projector), and a wired remote would make a computer-free viewing much easier. Also, as a video finder, I won't want it tethered to a computer, a remote control would be much preferred in this case (since I would have another video cam on the main scope).

For example, I use a MCX with 6RC at my other observing location, and with computer control and capture, it takes just a bit longer to fire up everything. Just this last weekend, I setup the inaugural first light of your Jr. Pro at our local club's observatory (C14), and amazingly, I was up and running in around 8min - and that included setting up a portable LCD projector and screen!

Peter,

I don't want to let the cat out too much at this time but a wired controller is in the works. Upgrade will be required. Keep in mind that this model is released as a Video Finder or a beginner's camera. More polls will be posted on the MallinCam Yahoo groups soon.

Rock,

Thanks for the patient response...I really like the idea of being able to "see" some of the fainter DSOs that are not visible at the eyepiece. I have a family and believe that we could really enjoy a Mallincam. I'm reading over the wonderfully illustrated MallinCam Setup Instructions.pdf to learn more…

About the RC scope in the combo...(Again total beginner here) is there some benefit to the RC design for video?

Mike,

Very good question, thank for asking.

Reason we choose this design (Ritchey-Chretien) is to allow the best possible image with flat field. Also cost versus a refractor clearly makes this optical system the best one to use for deep sky work.
Also these type of optical tubes are made for imaging and have everything made for adapting just about any cameras on them. Size and light gathering capability of the optical tube makes it an ideal choice.

Using the New MallinCam Micro on a 6" RC will deliver pinpoint clarity and images contrast with the several baffles in the VRC6. A perfect match for the small ccd sensor used in the MALLINCAM MICRO Video CCD camera. Also, you can use any accessories we have from our line of video astronomy cameras including focal reducers.

Thank you.

Hi, (no name)

Since we just finished a large batch of cameras, weather has not been very cooperative for us to take pictures with it. Only prototype images so far.

A video ccd camera is made to view live not take pictures. Anyone who claims you can do imaging with a video camera is not telling accurate information. You can "snap" some images of you observing run with a optional frame grabber to computer but that is it. Unless you know how to process video files you may be able to do some satisfactory images.

As soon weather clears up, we will be live on NSN with the camera at http://nightskiesnetwork.com . We will post when we will broadcast live on the MallinCam Yahoo Groups at:

Thank you.

Rock,

One of the specifications of camera says " 700 hundred Lines resolution through a BNC 75 Ohms output " can you expound how this full resolution can be viewed with commonly available HDTV and/or captured to PC/Mac? My concern is what I understand of composite is it doesn't support that resolution.

I am considering using this as a solar/planetary/bright DSO camera, so I could use extra resolution.

Curtis,

Any video ccd cameras with composite and or S-VIDEO is not HDTV. A camera needs to be design as such and must use a HD ccd sensor which lack serious sensitivity to do so. HDTV needs very small pixel size to achieve greater resolution to name a few requirements for HDMI.

With that said, you may be able to use the MallinCam Micro on solar, lunar and planet with no difficulties but do not expect HDTV quality here. Price reflect the function of the camera. I would highly recommend to get a MallinCam Signature for that with its SD-SDI output uncompressed professional broadcast output. Its the only way to go.
Unless you plan to do solar imaging, I would recommend the MallinCam SSIc. It was design for that purpose. It use the same sCMOS sensor as the MallinCam Signature. The BBC in UK are using MallinCam Signature exclusively for all their broadcast related to astronomy. They also use MallinCam Xtreme Just do a Google search on the subject.

MallinCam Signature:
http://mallincam.tripod.com/id55.html

MallinCam SSIc:
http://mallincam.tripod.com/id58.html

All HDMI type camera are 16:9 ratio. The MallinCam Micro is 4:3 ratio.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

You do not need to "join the MallinCam Yahoo groups" its open to public. You can go freely read everything on it without subscribing to it. We stand 100% transparent.

Magnitude all depends on F ratio and aperture. Using our MallinCam Jr PRO with a EXview HAD black and white sensor, we obtained magnitude 20.0 with a 10" with a MFR-5 focal reducer at 2 seconds exposure and also confirmed with 17.5" Dob. This is documented on our website.

This image of Hickson 50 was taken way back in 2005 at 2 seconds exposure by Jack Huerkamp
http://mallincam.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/hickson50j...

And this one of Hickson 50 with a 10" scope live on Yahoo Live broadcast channel back in 2008 from downtown Ottawa Canada in ALT-AZ:

http://mallincam.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/h50xw.jpg

I do not expect this camera to do the same but expect at least magnitude 18 or so at less than 17 seconds exposure. Keep in mind the ccd sensor used in the MallinCam Micro is only 1/3" in size and has a lot smaller pixels which reduce light gathering ability.

More final tests is expected as soon weather clears here.

Thanks for the question.
Warmest Regards,
Rock Mallin
