Your experiences with OMI Torus? new
      #1000768 - 06/15/06 03:26 PM

I will soon be living within about 3 hours of OMI Torus in Iowa. I am considering getting my 15" f/5 mirror re-coated (which it needs), maybe re-figued (if it needs it).

What have your experiences been with OMI Torus mirrors?

Thanks!

They are as solid as it gets. Do they coat in house? I was not aware of that fact. I only owned one of their mirrors, I bought it used even and they still bent over backwards to make sure I was happy with it, way above and beyond considering I purchased it used.

How old is your 15" Truss Dob? I have a couple of pretty old Discovery mirrors and they really don't show any signs of needing a re-coat. One is 5 years old a 17.5", the other is 8 years old and a 13.1".

It's about 6+ years old, but the guy who had it before me improperly cleaned it and there are some superficial scratches in the coatings and some oxidation I can't seem to clean off. I suppose if the guys at OMI Torus tell me it doesn't need recoating, I won't have it done, but I want the mirror tested anyway.

I believe they send it out to Spectrum to have the re-coating done.

They send it to another coater whose name escapes me at the moment. It's the same one Obsession uses.

As to OMI-Torus, James Mulherin is as professional as they get. I'm thrilled with my 18" OMI mirror.

Thanks, fellas. Honesty is as important to me as quality when it comes to things like this. It's good to know they have a rep of being honest AND precise!

Kevin,
You can't go wrong with OMI. James Mulherin is a pleasure to work with. A true gentleman. The last I heard they have their mirrors coated at a company called Flabeg. I think they're in Pennsylvania.

I have a 15" OMI and it is a superb optic. OMI supplies complete documentation on their work and you can be assured of a top quality mirror. I have emailed James on several occasions and found him to be extremely responsive and informative. OMI is noted for it's customer service and James will make sure you are completely satisfied with your mirror. I strongly recommend them.
