I have never seen such a monstorous mechanical head like that before. I looks quite rugged and based from what I know of Bogen's quality, it must be. Very impressive.

How smooth is the hand cranked motion?

It runs very smoothly. It also runs fast enough to be quite practical to use. There is no defeat unlock to the gearing either, so it is also very safe.

If I had a pair of giant Fujii 25 x 150s there is even a chance that they would be able to manage those as well.

The binocular and tripod combination ran about $900, so this is not a casual purchase though.

Ed Cannon,
Regarding your question,

>Anyone, Michael mentioned an arm with a counterbalance. What is that called? How good or bad are they for big binoculars?<

That is called a parallelogram mount. It is great for just about any size binos and especially for big binos except you have to match the size of the parallelogram mount to the weight/size of the binos (the heavier the binos the more sturdy the mount and tripod).

You can build your own parallelogram mount of wood or metal. There are plans mentioned here on Cloudy Nights, just use the search engine for, parallelogram. I built my own using square aluminum tubing upon which I have mounted my Takahashi binos. I use the parallelogram mount while reclining on a lawn lounger and thoroughly enjoy very comfortable viewing.

Hope this answers your question. Nick

In that instance Claudio, the tripod is called a "weapon of opportunity".
