My name is Ken and I live not far from portsmouth,UK I have just brought a second hand 10 inch lx200 classic ,and wondered if any one could help me. I have been looking on the Internet for some information about a problem I have with this telescope but no luck so far,the problem I have is in right ascension, when I put the R.A. Lock on,I find that their is still some play,I can move the arms left and right about 5mm.any help to over come this would be much appreciated as I would like to have a go at astrophotography.

Your lock is possibly getting warped. You can either unwarp it yourself or you can send it in to get repaired. I had the same problem crop up with a LX200 I owned. I choose to part the scope out since I didn't want to pay to get it repaired or do it myself, also it was an excuse to get a bigger telescope. When you store the telescope store it with the locks unlocked, also when you transport it keep the locks unlocked.

It could also be loose. Loosen the set screw on it, rotate the lever back a bit and retighten.. See if you can lock it any better that way.

As Jeff said your RA clutch may be loose. When the RA lock is locked look at it and there is a small allen wrench screw. Loosen your allen wrench screw then release your RA lock and move it counter clockwise a little bit. Then retighten the screw. Now relock your RA and see if it still has play in RA. I just had to do that last night. Mine was slowly working loose. Don't go too aggressive on the adjustment.

It after that, it still moves, open up the base and check the gears and engagement of them. You may have worn gears, or little engagement. If so, look into a set of Bucks Gears.

After some of your comments i decided to take the base of the bottom of the scope, and their lay the problem, the two screws that hold the worm gear housing were very loose, so i tightened them up,and now all the play has gone,
