The new version for the LX200GPS is 4.1i and it does the following:
Improved pointing on Alignment Stars after Cal Sensors.
Can now do normal (not Safe Load) code update from either RS232 port. Max serial baud rate increased to 115K (you must update first). Enhanced RA PEC training (3 turns required). Note: To save PEC data you must have the new version of the Updater (4.3), also DO NOT load previously saved PEC data. When scope is first turned on with new code, old PEC data is converted to new format.
The new RCX400 version is 21h. The update provides:
Improved pointing on Alignment Stars after Cal Sensors.
You can download the firmware here.
To install this firmware you will need the cable and the Autostar update software, which can be found on the same page above. If you are handy and want to build your own cable use this diagram.

The R series uses the LX200GPS firmware since that is what the fork system is based on.

The RCX firmware also adds a Focus calibration..
Plus it also allows you to set the temperature for the dew heater as well as setting the percentage as before.

Gama,
Have you done the firmware update on your scope?

If that is the only advantage to upgrading I think I'll leave well enough alone.. my Autostar version seems to work acceptably well, and I don't want to mess it up!
Cheers,

All right, confession time -- I've had my RCX one year as of this coming Sunday, and I've *never* upgraded the firmware. Perhaps superstitiously, I thought that might be one of the things that would cause the scope to finally have bad bad send-it-back-to-Meade-type problems. So...should I finally do it? Think it's safe? Is it easy to do process-wise?
And as a possibly unrelated (and possibly related ) question, should I get the extended warranty before my one year is up on Sunday? I just now thought about that...

Steph:
I'm struggling with that very same question, see related post today.

You should download the current firmware, then upload the latest. If you dont like it or it plays up, then just re-download the old version back. Thats it.. No problems.
