Lyra new
      #105230 - 05/10/04 12:53 PM

Spent a little time last night in my front yard with 15x70 Burgess binos (and my 5" Mak)...

Just wanted to say that Lyra is a beautiful constellation in binoculars. Nice binocular doubles everywhere, one really red star (like the color of Betlegeuse) that held my attention for quite some time, and I could detect M57 (Ring) through my 15x70s. First time I've done that. Didn't look like much, but hey, I guess I can say I've done it now, right?

And though not in Lyra, I also checked out M13 in my binos. Pretty cool. In fact, I could detect M13 w/ my naked eye last night...from my light polluted front yard!

Anyway...I highly recommend spending some binocular-time in this region of the sky.

cheers,
jeff

Most definitely a beautiful constellation and the Double-Double is always a fun challenge. A few years ago I was working on my Binocular Messier program and was shocked to see the Ring in 10x50 binos. I'll admit that the skies were very dark but it was still a surprise. There are some globulars in Lyra and also in Delphinus that are challenging but do-able in your 5" mak. Check em' out.

Ya, I like looking for the Ring in 10x50s. I've done it from my light polluted back yard, with a couple of narrowband filters.

There's a whole slew of doubles in Lyra, including one of my favorite binocular challenges. Struve 2470 and Struve 2474, the double-double's double. Much greater separations than e1e2, do-able with 15x70s.

Close to Lyra is 100 Herc a near perfect even 14.2" binocular double, I've split with 12x50 Pentax.

Some of the corners of Lyra are doubles or even triples.

Don't forget M56.
