As a newbie to this site, as well as to observational astronomy, I would appreciate any information concerning lens cleaning. I just received a pair of Oberwerk 15X70, 02 model, which I bought from A-mart. I’m very satisfied with my purchase but noticed that the objective and ocular lens have what would be best described as airborne lint on the outside surfaces, but happily no oily reside or smug. Now I’ve read enough to know these particles will probably not inhibit my viewing in any major way and that improper cleaning and too much cleaning will in fact do more harm. But my fastidious nature wants to eliminate these specks. I would love to hear any thoughts…including those thinking I’m crazy or going thought the first new baby stage. Thanks!

Hi, Sam.
Cleaning optics has a couple of hazards; coating damage is always a concern plus it's easy to smear the lenses.
It's not really as scary as some make it sound but the right solution and technique are important to minimize problems. There's a very good tutorial and cleaning solution formula at: http://www.arksky.org/asoclean.htm

Hi John,
Thanks for the website. After careful consideration I decided against the possibility of rubbing all my coating off ;-) and would do a light dusting.
