Vixen BT80M eyepiece recomendations?
      #1082526 - 08/07/06 06:48 PM

I just acquired a pair of Vixen BT80M binoculars... I have pairs of matched Harry Siebert eyepieces which yield approx. 35X & 65X magnification, but Siebert's 11mm eyepieces- with which I had hoped to work at 88X won't focus in them due to their design. I am looking for recommendations if anybody has ever worked with these binoculars for other eyepieces that will yield 88-90X magnification & work well in these. Anyone have experience with these Vixens?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Some bino’s from Miyauchi 5x32 Binon's up through Garrett 20x110 Signature's,
Some telescopes from a Stellarvue 80mm NHNG up through a couple of 8” reflectors…
And a wonderful 4.25" Delmarva Shiefspiegler!
Some good friends, made here on C/N.
Oh- several cats and a wonderful wife!
Anyone want a cat???? :-O

Wes,

That is disappointing! We have BT100s and two pairs of Siebert Ultras (24mm and 17mm) that give us 25x and 35x. We are delighted with them and will be looking for more powerful ones soon.

Have you considered or tried Barlows? I take it your Oberwerk 100s are not BTs?

Hi, Graham-
You have the same eyepieces that I have- the 24mm/17mm Sieberts! The difference is, my Vixen has a 900mm focal length, your Oberwerk BT100's much shorter, giving you lower magnification with the same eyepieces- however I do wish my Oberwerks were the BT100's! They are not; they are the lesser IF's.
Barlows... Hmmm- that's an interesting possibility- something I'll have to research. Anyone else used barlows on binoc's???
Wes

Wes,

I asked the question about Barlows on CN just a few days ago and the only reply to date is from EdZ!

Our BTs are 'only' 600mm and I envy you your 900mm. The Ultras are wonderful, compared with the originals, and we are delighted with them.

I exchanged emails with Harry Siebert about using his Barlows, but haven't followed up just yet, partly because I think it will be better to phone him to decide whether to buy them or more of his EPs.

He commented that Barlows might have some undesirable effects in binoculars and I would prefer to talk them through on the phone with him, but want to get a few problems with our BTs sorted out first (that's a long story!).

Well, Graham-
All I can say is I hope you have free long distance when you call him- if you've never talked to him before- because he is as long-winded, friendly, sociable & informative on the phone as he is short in his emails! Seriously- when you get done talking to him, you will know the history of the guy that dug the sand out of the earth- and who smelted the glass that they made your barlows with!!! He is absolutely the most informative & sociable person I've ever dealt with... always a true pleasure to talk to! Wish he lived next door! The kind of a guy I'd love to have as a neighbor. An absolute gentleman & a pleasure to do business with. That's why I have about a dozen of his eyepieces. Not to mention the fact they're good, too!

Wes,

It's a great help to know that! I'll let you know how I get on, though it may be a while before I pluck up the courage!

Just solved the problem... ordered a pair of Vixen LV 10mm eyepieces... since they were what was originally supplies with/recommended for these binocs, should solve the issue!
