That's sharp, Terry. Nice to see a design that steps away from the typical tried and true. Little attentions to detail like the angle on the alt bearings matching those on the side panels, the lip on the bearings, and the Telrad risers really show the thought that went into this. Thanks for posting it.

What's the front of the base like?
How well does it hold up to torque?

Skyquest XT8 • NexSTar 8i • Eeroscope 6" f/5 ball(sacrifice was not in vain) • Vixen ED80sf • Edmund red-tube 4.25" f/10 • Edmund Astroscan

Facts are stubborn things.

This was my first ATM project--directions taken from an Astronomy magazine article--Abs pipe and copylens RFT.
My son and I built it in 1988 for a homeschool project, and it was our only telescope for 18 years.

And your dob is a work of art, Terry! Thats the way to leave it up in the livingroom during the day- Craft it as functional sculpture!

I felt in love with Gerd Huisel's 8" dob-in-a-box travelscope.

So much that I decided to make my own. It is not an exact copy, but it will be very similar. You can follow the illustrated step by step progress at this weppage.

It is in Dutch, but you can translate it with an online translator. Not that much of text anyway, I think the pictures give a good idea.

Every few days I update te page with new pictures.

Stefan,

What material are your poles made of?

Hi Gregg,

the poles are dark brown powdercoated aluminum, 10mm diameter. I happened to find 'm at a cheaper price than the bare aluminum ones. I thought the dark color was an advance for a telescope.

This is nothing special, but it works good for me. Last spring('06) I ran a cross an add on AM for a Meade 6" objective(1200fl). I bought it with the idea of using it for a guide scope. This year I got around to making a frame for it. I used 3/4" conduit for the poles. I had an old 2" "Novac" R&P focuser. The aluminum mounting brackets have 2° of adjustments in both directions. for right now I have black poster board for a light shield, Will get around make a nylon cover & a front lens extention someday.

Jay,

If, for whatever reason, this project will not finish you can still turn this...this 'thing' into a small BBQ ...
