Dave these stores run hot and cold on aluminum extrusions.
You might be able to make do with a variety of large poles that are used to hold curtain rings. They are in a different department and come plated, painted and bare.

I've priced the curtain rods -- way over the top. And the broom handles are too narrow.
It's not for my current scope, it's for my future 16", or else my future home-ground 10" . Both of these are a couple of years in the future, so there's no rush.

Dave a number of ATM's here at CN have purchased carbon fiber tubes from Aerospace Composites. The prices are right, the strength is phenomenal and they are easy to work with.
Mike Jones is using them now for his big planetary scope.

I'm in the process of building the sector drive for this pier which uses a frame head from a bicycle as the basis for a fork mount.
Developing a second unit, a GEM, from two donor bicycles that will slip into this head so it can be either be a fork or a GEM.

This what it will look like when completed.
The sector drive (not shown in this image) will use a 1 RPM Hankscraft geared DC motor driving the sector via a 10 x 32 threaded rod. Speed control will be micro-adjusted with a Frequency Modulation Circuit.
This unit has already been registered in both mechanical and optical contests at Stellafane this year.
The scope, a 4.25" F/7.4 has seen a lot of use on a CG-4 mount. It's been so satisfying I've elected to build an almost identical scope around a 4.25" F/5 mirror.

Here are the 4 TMB lensed scopes I've made. The first was a TMB130 in a Tak FS128 tube with an AP focuser in an AP155 tailpiece. (Following Jim Buchanans lead.)

The second was a TMB152 lens in a totally custom aluminum tube, fully threaded design. AP 2.7" focuser with FT.

The third was a TMB152 lens in a red tube identical in design to the white one except for the 4" AP focuser in place of the 2.7" focuser on the white one.

The fourth was a TMB175 lens in a fiberglassed phenolic high powered rocketry tube. This had a "space frame" design like the TMB CNC tubes did, where threaded rods pulled the focuser and lens adapters together, compressing the tube. You can also see the tailpiece of an AP155 in this shot, allowing easy compatibility with the AP 4" focuser.
My 5th custom TMB is IN PROGRESS... it's a TMB105 lens in an AP Traveler tube with AP Traveler focuser and a custom machined dewshield.

To all: Please post only pictures of completed scopes. Scopes in progress should have their own thread so members can watch the progress and help as needed. Thanks!

Gorgeous scope (except for the missing strut, of course :-) ). Looks like you've visited with Albert Highe! Got any more photos?

Where's that confounded strut?!
Zep ref!? Cool!!
Sorry I've been away, That's amazing Art that the ball scope actually fits inside the ball, Wow. I like your bike fork scope I also designed one of those a while back in college when I was dirt poor and yearning for an equatorial scope.
Nice 10" er Dave. I was using square trusses last year when my scope was set up as a ultra-light. I thought they were easy to work with and very sturdy. Looks like you have the only thing that may be more important than aperture, dark skies!! I was out near Nevada in Utah earlier this year and the skies were amazing> M101 my favorite!! All of these scopes are a testimony to what skilled labor can create through passion. I am always impressed (and sometimes depressed at the level of excellence that has been established).
