Jason,
Great scope. I surely enjoy the simplicity of design. And the ball gives plenty of mobility.
Your adaptation to the field tripod is great.
Great work!

Thanks Rob! I am planning on 6" and 12.5" ball scopes when I get these darn mirrors done!! I really like working on a mirror or scope during the cloudy days of late fall and winter so I have not done too much lately. Still need to get my article done on the ball scope construction.
And I echo the others.. this is a great thread! I find most of my inspiration is from other ATMs. Making telescopes is one of the most rewarding things for me.

I just threw out the suggestion, it was all the wonderful, crafty ATM'ers that really need to be thanked for providing us with such a great topic. And great scopes to drool over.

I saw a portaball at Table Mtn Star party in Wahsington, and man that design is cool.
It provides an infinate range of motion, very effortlessly.
Beautiful scopes.
This thread has inspired myself, and it has also been as you say a great Insiration to many ATM'ers.

Ok, these aren't exotic but do span both ends of the (size) spectrum (bad pun ) my 32" F/4 GoTo & my daughter's 4 1/4" F/4. Both mirrors are homemade. They each took 1st. place optical at Stellafane in '98 and the 4 1/4" took 1st. place Junior mechanical in '97.

John, does your scope have some sort of remote control collimation?

John,
Wasn't this 32" at NEAF this year?
The back of the mirror looks honeycombed. Did you cast it, too?

Hey John,
When are you going to tire of huge telescopes?
Glad to see that you at least KNOW how to build small ones.
BTW, all my heavier scopes continue to glide smoothly in azimuth since I started incorporating your "donut" center bearing approach. Thanks.

I will put that solution to work this weekend! It's so obvious it elluded me!
Thanks John for the idea. Thanks Ron for sharing it.

Greg,
Your scopes are fine. Are all the mirrors in the Trischie flats/paraboloids?
Can you describe your design, and a bit about the construction?
Beautiful.

My OH My!
32"...what a photon roundup.
Once you corral all those photons, I bet the views are spectacular.
Beautiful scope, beautiful.
John, I am impressed. great workmanship.
I put my hand at pushin 6" glassonce , but pooped out, and decided buying was, for me, the best route. I can't imagine 32"'s.
Great job.

Made them, blanks came from Newport. BTW, BK-7 is easy and fast to work. You can save a lot of cash by ordering the blanks "plano-plano fine ground" as you work all 4 sides anyway.

Rob,
The design was presented by A. L. Woods in the old TM magazine. The Stellefane folks have it in their library. Optically it's a 6" ellipse, 3.5" convex and 3.5" concave. The 3.5" mirrors are a little small for my hands and to help with edge issues I used 4" blanks for the secondary and tertiary.
The file's to big for CN- http://www.eclipse-t.com/tri_plot.bmp http://www.eclipse-t.com/2.bmp
Case is recycled closet door skins (3/16 ply), focuser is home brew crawford.
Optically it seems to be defraction limited but that's still under test. The close pair in double-double split cleanly with about as much space between them as the airy disks are in diameter. It's a real hit at the local star parties.

HI--
Mark-- Yes, that's remote collimation via RF wireless. There's a thread in the Reflectors forum on this.
Keith-- The 32" was displayed at NEAF this year. The mirror is honeycombed, the blank was made by Hextek in Tucson. It's 5" thick, slumped to the approximate radius & weighs 85 lbs.
Ron-- Good to hear from you! I think this is the limit for me on size. As for the small one, that was an aberration, a weak moment on my part.
Glad you found the center bearing useful.
Art-- Your welcome also, just futz with the thickness/height to dial in the proper friction for your taste.
Rob-- Thanks for the compliment.
If anyone is attending the Black Forrest Star Party in 2 weeks stop by and say hello as I plan to attend and will have both of the scopes w/ me.
John
