Night Sky Magazine - Question on Back Issues
      #1086717 - 08/09/06 11:12 PM

I have just renewed my interest in astronomy recently and I will soon purchase a new scope but until then I am spending time reading these great forums and whatever magazines I can. So I have this question for the forum: Which, if any, back issues of Night Sky magazine would you recommend to pick up? Which issues would you consider as a must have?

thanks,

All of them.

Well, . . . Night Sky has not been published for very long, it's a fairly new magazine so there isn't a long list of back issues. I've enjoyed every issue from #1 to the present.

Welcome to Cloudy Nights, Richard!
I agree, I have most of the issues of that magazine. You can't go wrong with any of the back issues.

I've never seen an issue of Night Sky. Isn't it an offering by Sky Pub that's a little more entry-level than S&T? Or do I have the wrong idea about it?

Yes Rick, that is the one. I find that there is always something of interest in that mag. I still learn something new everytime I read an issue of that magazine.

I'm also a fan of this magazine. IMO every issue so far has been very good. Not all of us in this hobby are tech oriented so some of S&T and Atronomy is
lost on us. However, I feel Night Sky is of value to those beyond the newbie classification too.

I whole-heartedly agree! I subscribe to all 3, & S&T, & Astronomy has too much "deep" hi-tech articles for my taste. For that reason, I'm not renewing S & T. Night Sky has down-to-earth articles that benefit all levels of experience, plus it is just plain, easy, fun reading!

Thanks everyone,

I picked up the July/August issue, the last copy, at borders the other day and read it from cover to cover. Plus my girlfriend thumbed through it and wanted me to order one of the Spotlight Prints for the living room! Looks like I will need to pick up all the back issues of Night Sky. I called the other day to subscribe to it.

Thanks for all the replies

BoriSpider,
I only have the July/August issue since I am just starting out fresh with astronomy again. I would be interested in any you have available. I am new to CN and am not sure how you can contact me. I hesitate to leave my email on the board with spam bots lurking around. You can contact me from my website here at Blankmindblog.com

Some of us are pack rats, while others don't save every snippet of paper. You might try a classified wanted ad on one or more online astronomy sites (such as this one) and see if you get any responses. In all likelihood any that are offered would be cheaper than going to Sky Publishing. And welcome to the hobby. Peter

Richard, welcome to CN! Try your library...no sense buying them if they have them.

Well, you do eventually want to challenge yourself in this hobby, and the material in Sky and Tel will help you do just that. There is still a lot of good information in the magazine even for the beginner which isn't necessarily present in Night Sky, so reading Sky and Tel will help you grow in the hobby. I recall getting Sky and Telescope as a teen ager and not understanding all of it, but I still looked forward to each and every issue arriving in my mailbox. That feeling has not lessened over the years. Night Sky is a good beginner's magazine, but I still recommend Sky and Telescope to those who ask about which periodical to take. Clear skies to you.

Nght sky seems to have returned to the basics and is geared towards people that want to observe.

There are numerous articles about observing things in Sky and Telescope, so although there is a lot else in the magazine, observing is one of the areas which is also well-covered. It offers a larger span of areas of interest for those from beginner to expert, which, in the end, may make it a better magazine for the average amateur. Clear skies to you.

I've been getting Night Sky since spring of this year and absolutely love it. Here's why: S&T and Astronomy strike me as trying to be all things to all people. Many of the articles are clean over my head and many others deal with aspects of the hobby I've yet to embrace, like photography.

Night Sky knows its audience and doesn't monkey around reaching out to PhDs, or reviewing $6900 CCD cameras like Astronomy did in the September issue (Puleeeze).

In direct answer to your question, the Mar/Apr 06 issue of Night Sky included a 25 object mini-Messier tour and a great explanation of how weather patterns affect viewing.

It simplifies finding things, which is what this hobby is all about. I'd consider it "must have".

I encountered the magazine for the first time last night and I was actually pretty impressed. I didn't see a single article (except maybe one that touched on photography) that I wasn't keenly interested in reading. I'm one who doesn't care if I'm reading something I already am familiar with, as long as it is presented in an interesting manner. And of course I'm far from familiar with everything, so I'm sure I stand to learn something from nearly any periodical I read.

My nephew, who is thinking about getting a telescope, bought a copy and brought it up for me to thumb thru, so I was unable to read it all. He will bring it back, though, and he is subscribing to it, so I should get to read it regularily!

Nightsky was designed expressly for newbies. Great magazine for the newcomer. I tend to find the articles a bit on the basic side. But then again I did take an astronomy course in college. Highly recommend it though!.
