I can't believe what just happened I just took my new 15x70 Celestron Skymasters outside to do a thorough testing on them on my tripod and when I turned my back after looking thru them...I heard a loud "THUD" behind me
I feared the worst ....and my fears came true!!!.The binos were there right on the ground and I immediately picked them up to inspect the damage.
No glass was apparent and all I can really see amiss is the retaining ring on one of the objectives...it seems to be out a bit from the initial crash.
The one thing that is very apparent is the double-vision views thru the binos.
I emailed the store I bought them from and asked if I could return them for an exchange because I recall seing a limited lifetime warranty in the box when they arrived yesterday.
I wish this never had happened....and I now realize why it did after inspecting pics I just took of it on the tripod.
The piece that holds the metal "L" bar that clamps on was slightly "off" and when I went to aim the binos high, gravity took over and down they tumbled
You can see in the pic that I enlarged why they fell.

Tough break Mark. I'll have to remember to triple check mine when I mount them. May we all learn something from your lesson.

thats too bad, i feel your pain. for what it's worth... if you're gonna send them back, try whackin' 'em on the ground and see if they'll "collimate" back to normal.
seriously, i did that with a pair of cheapies 7x35's and it actually worked!

Yea...you're right. I'll NEVER use a cheap tripod like that again for binoculars...a big lesson has been learned by this, NEVER EVER use a cheap, flimsy tripod!!!! Hopefully the store will replace them or fix the alignment. If not...I'll just buy another pair when I can.

I feel sorry with you.
I was in the same situation like you, but I was lucky, when I like a goal keeper catched my falling 25x100.
After that I always triple check the tripod and mounting.

One of my freinds dropped a Celestron C5 (SCT) trying it out on a small camera mount. I've moving in the direction of heavy, beefy mounts. I wonder if a safety line may be a good idea?

The same thing happened to me with a Bogan tripod/head. The small locking pin for the plate that holds the binoc mount got gummed up and didnot catch-and the binoculars fell about 6' to the ground. I was lucky with only scratches and sand on the binoculars.

You are not alone. Same thing happened to me the other week with a brand new pair of Obie 20x80s. Binocs fell out of my lap when I bent over to pick up a chart, and when I picked the binocs up again to look through them again I saw 2 whole moons in the sky! I tried to collimate them myself, but I could never re-merge the images by adjusting the collimation screws alone. I finally sent them back to Oberwerk to have them readjust them for me properly (for a small fee of course).

Hi MARK,
That is very sad,I hope you can get them replaced.
I use a similar tripod for my 15x70s,and drilled a hole right through the mounting plate,AND the section the Mounting plate sits in. I fitted a Stainless steel bolt right through the whole assembly, and the "L" bracket.
It is no longer "Quick Release",BUT, it CANT fall Either. Hope this helps.
Regards. John

Thanks for your replies everyone I just got off the phone with the nice gentleman from the store I purchased the binocs from and he said the regular warranty does not cover accidents....of course I figured this, but tried anyways in hope of getting them replaced.
The good news is that celestron has a "no fault" warranty which covers any kind of defects or accidents like mine.
All I have to do is mail a US money order for $25.00 and I ship them off to get fixed or replaced !!!
Has anybody else ever done this before?
I hope they get replaced because the entire binoculars are now "loose" from the fall. Thanks for that tip John.....I will be doing the same to my tripod today!

It'll probably be cheaper for them to ship you a new pair straight back - than to mess about fixing them - you'll almost certainly get a new pair.

You have my deepest sympathy Mark .
If it's any consolation , there could well be some truth in the old adage " what goes around comes around " !
I confess to having chuckled to myself not THAT many moons ago when a most esteemed fellow member reported the undignified descension of one of his most favoured binoculars , which thankfully ( and probably due to their being of stout construction ) escaped any serious damage ( which I WAS pleased about , to be truthful , in spite of my amusement )
What I have NOT reported until now , is that recently a less fortuituous fate occured to what is by far the most expensive instrument amongst my modest collection .
I was in the process of dusting down and carefully cleaning my Zeiss Diascope and the Bogen 501 head and Manfrotto 055B tripod it practically lives on in the comfortable but precarious surroundings of our lounge , when my mobile phone rang , which I have to take outside to enable callers to hear me , due to a poor signal .
I carelessly left the whole set - up just around the corner from the door , when another family member , who shall remain nameless , came rushing along the hallway to answer a call on the LANDLINE telephone , dashed into the lounge , and apparantly sent my pride and joy crashing to floor :-(
I'm glad I wasn't actually there to WITNESS this nightmare of occurences !
It's only fair to admit that the " culprit " was even more upset about this accident than I was , and I can only blame myself REALLY -- but suffice it to say I didn't at the time !
The blow was not softened by the fact we have no carpets in our house -- just wooden flooring throughout , but at least the tripod was set at it's shortest height at the time !
Luckily , the damage was limited to a slight scratch on the scope body but a SERIOUS crack on the zoom eyepiece .
I was 90% CERTAIN the eyepiece itself MUST be damaged as in a state I can only describe as being considerably less than CALM , immediately grabbed the entire set - up with both hands and somehow CAREFULLY took it outside to inspect the REAL damage , while the " culprit " was doubtless cowering in a corner like a puppy which KNOWS he or she has just " had an accident " displeasing to it's owner :-)
I am eternally grateful , and thankful to Zeiss Optics , that the damage following THIS particular accident is wholly restricted to cosmetics .
Granted , the damage HAS devalued the little scope , but it's not an item I would ever dream of SELLING in any case .
Regards , and BE CAREFUL folks !
Kenny

Well..I just got back from sending my new 15x70 skymasters to Celestron. I had to pay a total of $54.00 Canadian for shipping plus the $25.00 U.S. fee,(which is the equivalent of $47.00 U.S. total for both), not bad for them repairing or replacing them.
They will likely have to replace them since the entire housing is loose.
When I get these from them, I will be EXTRA cautious this time around and take no more chances of having them fall.....even without the tripod, I will be putting the strap on it !!!
I also discovered on another close inspection that I put the piece in "backwards" and the locking part wasn't "locking" into place !!!
