OK. I have got some Bobs Knobs for my LX90 and I am scared to fit them for two reasons. 1: I've never fitted these things before and I've heard rumours of springs falling out... 2: I've never collimated an SCT before and collimation is currently OKish... I don't want to make matters worse by fitting the knobs and then failing to collimate properly.
I'm off to a star party at the end of the month and I am undecided as to what I should do.... or take them with me and get a seasoned SCT user to take me through it..
Cheers... and wish me Clear Skies for my 1st star party.

Ken,
if you decide to wait till the Star Party make sure you fit the knobs in daylight JUST incase a spring goes flying.
I am in a similar position to you (my scope needs to go back so I'm going to wait till it is fixed before I fit the knobs). I have pretty decent collimation and don't want to risk upsetting it as I have never owned an SCT before so collimating itis new to me.

I'm not sure about the LX90, but I recently installed Bob's knobs on a LX200R and it was quite an adventure. Although I felt I had carefully followed the directions, the spring loaded secondary "popped" and I was forced to remove the corrector plate and push the the springs back on the secondary so I could thread the collimation screw. This resulted in a fingerprint on the secondary, which I have yet to do anything about because I'm scared to mess with it. On the bright side, the knobs are great and easy to use once installed, so all it's all worth it in the end.

There is a trick to installing them. I am going to be going through the same thing shortly. I have found a couple of sites that tell you how to do it and not totally mess up the collimation in the process. Here are the links to the sites.
AstroChris This one tells you how to do it and how to re-collimate after the fact.
Scopestuff This is for an LX90 and a little hard to read but it's the same principal. Hope these help you...and me in a few.

After reading the links pointed to by Marc - I did a little more hunting around and found this Bobs Knobs 6 Screw Method this explains it well - only problem it also mentions the possibility of a spring taking a plung..

I suppose the counterpoint to this debate is to 'not install them'!
I've owned a few SCT's and added various upgrades but collimation screws haven't been one of them. I'm not sqeamish when it comes to working on scopes but I prefer the collimation screws as they are. I have a little screw that has a knurled knob on it and I adjust the screws with this. I do tweek collimation quite frequently and I'm happy with this arrangement.
Just an alternative view.
