Internet Explorer Error
      #1094777 - 08/14/06 08:27 PM

When I try to get on the internet on my desktop I get an error. I can't get IE to open and get on the web, but the computer is still downloading updates from Norton and other various programs. The error pops up instantly when I try to get on.
The error is:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C\Program Files\Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This your only computer?

Do you have the install discs for Windows?

Do you have a previous instance of Windows you can roll back too? (you access on boot up with F8)

Have you updated the OS recently (ie. new patches) or installed new software?

In the mean time, delete all your temp files (right click on your C drive in My Computer, choose Tools (this is all from memory so I may be off a bit, the windows machine is off due to lightening so I'm on my laptop - a Mac) from there you want to clean up your drive. If you don't have Empty Temporary Internet Files checked at some point the OS chokes on all those files. I seem to recall this side effect - once. So it's a reach.

But hey, gotta start somewhere!

Thanks rboe
Yes I have my laptop.
I have my XP Pro disks, is IE on those?
I don't know, I'll try the F8 thing.
The OS is updated automatically and I manually check weekly.
I ran all my anti virus, and spyware utilities, (about 8 of them which I keep up to date) and nothing shows, one of those is cache cleaner that dumps all temporary files and cookies. I'm only using about 10% of my hard drives capacity, I also did a system restore, with no luck.

Hmmm, go to Microsofts' sight and see what they say about a solution without reloading the OS. My guess is something got walked on during the patch install (maybe it didn't complete properly) - but my ham fisted solution is reloading the OS - without formatting the drive. Should restore your files but then you're looking at downloading all those patches again.

I did the F8 at booting and the only option that looked like it would help was" Restore configuration to the last one that worked", and I also did another system restore back into May, neither worked.

Check with MS, they may have run across this already. The restore option was my last great hope.

I did a quick check at MS, there are a couple of things I will try. I think Frontpage is causing the problem somehow. It started doing this when I started working on my webpage.

Try WinSock XP Fix 1.2 ...

Layered Service Provider or LSP, typically handles low-level Internet-related tasks, and data is passed through a chain of these programs on its way to and from the Internet. However, due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of the software, this chain can get broken, causing the Internet connection to become inaccessible..

(I keep this utility on my HD)!!

Maybe I was too hasty blaming Frontpage for the problem, this morning when I signed on the computer I got about a dozen different Norton Internet Security errors and it will not load. I can open the IE browser now but it still won't connect. I tried to uninstall Norton, and it shows I did, but all the files are still in the Program Files directory. Can I delete the Norton folder manually, from the program files directory? I'm hoping with Norton gone I could get IE working again so that I can get help from Norton or MS website.

That's a good lesion to never install Norton. I have fixed far far far more computers from Norton and mcaffee then I have from viruses themselves.

NOD32 is good AV software that doesn't screw up your computer.

I have a Corporate version of Norton on all my Machines with XP-Pro and they all function fine. I have had issues with other versions of Norton in the past.

Star Wars
Thanks for the Norton uninstall link, I downloaded to disc from my laptop then loaded and ran it on my desktop and everything is back to normal except I don't have an anti virus now. I appreciate your help, you probably saved me hours.

Which is the better of the 2 evils, Norton or Macaffee, both are free, I got Norton internet 2006 with my router and the Mcaffee from comcast? I have always used Norton since 2002, it always works well but it sure causes a lot of operating problems.

I used to use Norton and it was constantly conflicting with my wireless adapter. It would cause both to lock up on bootup. After many searches and researches I ended up with Avast antivirus free version and have no problems at all now.My firewall works fine,my antivirus works fine and the wireless adapter works fine.Happy customer

Do not use the lesser of the 2 evils Mcaffee or Nortons. Both will mess up your computer. Use the all good NOD32. It is raked #1 at stopping viruses, it uses very little memory so performance won't suffer, it updates every hour, it will have a profile to stop a new virus far faster then anyone else and the best feature of all is just works in the background and you won't know its there.
Don't forget about the best virus protection of all. Good old fashion common sense.

Maybe I'm dumb, (but mainly because I'm cheap, my virus updates are already paid for until late October for Norton) but I loaded Norton 2006 internet security again. Same thing, but different, problems happened, errors, locking up, modem losing connection, endless updates.... I downloaded the free Mcaffe until I figure out what to do as a final fix. It's like a new computer, much faster and you don't even know it's operating, much better than Norton as long it protects as well.
