Clicking sounds...
      #1094968 - 08/14/06 10:23 PM

The Azimuth (LX200GPS) axis makes some clicking sounds sometimes while tracking...very quiet but still there. GOTO and Tracking seem normal. This is only some positions, its like its from the base (computer), very faint clicking. What could be wrong?

My 10" GPS started doing this after about 2 years of use. The noise would show up when the scope was unbalanced. I posted this message on the Yahoo group last June:

"I finally took my scope of the pier to find the source of the loud ticking in the RA drive. I found a number of things wrong when I opened the base of the scope.

1. There was excessive backlash in the replacement steel gears. I had replaced the plastic gears with Bucks Gears about 2 years ago. At that time I had adjusted the backlash out. I re-adjusted the screw that controls the backlash.

2. The spring loaded worm gear was to tight. I backed off the stop screw 1 turned.

3. There was little or no grease left on the steel replacement gears. So I re-greased the steel gears and the worm gear.

I re-assembled to scope and tested it. The ticking sound is
completely gone. It also used to be really noisey during high speed slews. The gears would "ring", that noise is gone now too.

In a few days I'll check the Dec gears as I am sure they may need to be re-lubed also. I guess I need to do my yearly PM every 9 months."

are there instructions on exactly what to do/ what kind of grease to buy in the free MAPUG archives perhaps? or do I need to spend a lot of money for Peterson's instruction manual?

The Software Bisque recommends Lubriplate Motor Assembly Grease Series 105 as the lube for their scopes, I have now be using a similar grease for all my scopes.

I meant instructions for opening the RA base, what to look for, which things to tighten/loosen, which things to NOT touch, etc or for that do you have to pay over a hundred for a bucks gear upgrade/tune up?

Everything here that starts clicking goes under water for 24 hours while standing clear. If still clicking continue submersion another 24.

Marcus, what grease do you use?

I actually use 2 types of gease. On the Paramount I used Dynatex 49598 Motor Assembly Grease and have also applied it to my LX200GPS. Before that I had been using Mobil One Synthetic Grease on my LX200GPS mount as well as the gearing on the observatory's dome and shutters.

Thanks Marcus. Mobil One Synthetic was the one I was trying to remember. It was in a thread exchange you had a good while back.
