RCX400 with MaxMount new
      #1087351 - 08/10/06 11:06 AM

Anyone here has a MaxMount yet? It looks so cool. I am curious to know its performance. Is it possible to mount any LX telescopes onto this GEM?

General question:

Is it advisable to stick with the same diametres of scopes in the future new-buying? Let's say the accessories which are mounted on the objective lens, if I get a larger diametre telescope, it just can't fit onto it, right?

Still vapor ware. And most accessories are interchangable.

If I am thinking of the right mount, the MaxMount, when it is available, is huge, larger than anything else amateur astronomers are accustomed to. It is designed for observatory use and would not be the sort of thing one just sets up for a night's viewing.

If I remember right, the center of the mounting plate sits over 5 FEET tall...

for that price of a GEM I would stick with either a Paramount ME or AP1200 or even a TAK or highend Fork... THese are proven very capable GEMs with over 150lbs capacity.. i have the paramount (a real work horse) - my brother has the AP1200 (a real beauty...) IMHO

Not to mention they are proven performers. Given Meade's track record, I sure wouldn't want to be the first kid on the block. Not at that price.

Sure. The MaxMount will probably be attractive only to those requiring a larger payload than the other mounts mentioned can support, or to folks using the 16" and 20" RCX tubes, which require that additional capacity as well as the included electronics.

Looks like the MaxMount is really a big monster. Basically, paramount is better or ap1200? (Although I am not going to get them as my 8"LX90 does not need that gigantic and powerful mount, right?)

I ended up putting my 10" GPS on a Paramount. While some may say it is over kill, there are things about those mounts that make them atractive, other than just their good looks and payload ability. The remote operation of the Paramount is a joy. But it has taken me awhile to get my TPoint model refined for accurate pointing. The one thing I really liked about my wedged mounted LX200GPS was the pointing on that scope was as close to perfect as one could ask. It is ashamed it had motor problems as that is what lead me to place the OTA on the Paramount in the first place. Meade did give me a new motor and controller board, but it didn't show up until after I had the Paramount.

Is Paramount portable enough to carry it to a camp?

While some may consider the Paramount ME portable I don't. It is not only the weight it is the power it needs. The Paramount runs off a 48 volt DC power brick. The means you either need AC mains to plug it into. Or you would need one of the following: an invertor, four 12 volts batts in series or two 24 volt batts in series. That is alone is enough to make me leave it home.

Wow! Such a power monster! I am not likely to get it as its rocket price. (at least, to me.)

Hi Kim,

just to let you know, 'Telescope House' in the UK has started taking orders for these monsters. They are also for lottery winners only (judging by the price) a little out of my price range.

http://www.telescopehouse.co.uk/page.aspx?theLang=001lngdef&pointerid=7445B6BB07E14579A23331F256C3FDD1&action=lnk

If I had the money they would be certainly worth considering, I'd just need the large country house to go with it.

Regards,
Neil.

The price is really sky high! Is it cheaper to get the 16" RCX400 together with the MaxMount? Is 16" equal to 0.5 metre or 20" equal to 0.5metre?

Kim I believe 20 inches is equal to 0.5 metre.
1 inch = 25.4mm so 20 inches = 508mm or half a metre.....I think..;)

I also think you are saving a little if you buy the mount and scope together. It doesn't really matter as I can't afford it, and probably never will. Not that I'm too bothered, still loving my paramount to be honest.

Unless I won a lottery, I wouldn't consider this mount. It's better for me to stick with the current fork mount. Is the fork mount reliable?
