Oberwerk 45 Degree BT-100
      #1102201 - 08/18/06 11:39 PM

Just purchased a new pair of these with fork mount from opticsplanet for a very good price. Wondering how people like them? I read some good reviews, but not too much out there. Are any eyepieces preferred over others? How is the CA on planets and bright stars? Any tricks for optimization? Are they easy to collimate? Are there collimation instructions out there somewhere?

These should be a lot of fun!!

Thanks!

Steve

Steve,

Welcome to the 'club'!

There is a bit of debate buried on CN about alternative EPs for BTs, so dig around for a while. I wrote the review on using them for bird watching and have just submitted an update relating to EPs. My wife and I selected Siebert Ultras, have 24mm and 17mm pairs and are delighted with them. If your pockets are deeper there are more exotic choices that may give yet better performance.

The most recent discussion is entitled "BT100-45 Eyepiece Comparison", which can be found on the second page of the Binocular forum index. I have a poor record trying to post links, but it is easily found!

Keep us informed of your choice.

There are a number of links to posts on Eyepieces for various BTs. The links can be found easily by looking in the "Binocular Minireviews" post under Oberwerk.

I think the Oberwerk 45 Degree BT-100 is the best value available for interchangeable EP 45° binocular viewing. The provided 25X EPs are quite good, and a pair of Radians (or something of like quality) will be even better. The BT performance is nicely corrected for CA (call it a highly corrected apochromat or, as advertised, a semi-APO). I get a bit of CA on Jupiter, but not on even the brightest stars. I haven't tried higher magnifications yet because I'm enjoying the 25X so much. I'm sort of hoping that Orion will come out with a click stop zoom EP one of these days, but I probably shouldn't hold my breath. I know that TeleVu has one.

Congrats on your new bino: you will love it.

Exciting!

Right now I have a set of Pentax XL's for binoviewing with my Denk. Hopefully my eyes will allow me to use these with the BT-100's. I will probably try some other sets too and let you all know how they work.

Now, on to the articles mentioned to check these out further.

By the way, when you all told you wifes/spouses, was the response "Oh, another pair of binoculars", then I showed my wife the pictures and the response was "oh my!! Those are huge!"

PS, if my price is any indication, I think the value may be getting even better.

Steve,

My wife and I use our BTs for birdwatching mostly, and we both use them a lot. So no problems after she had used them a while, just "when can we get more power"!
