Nice to have your scope back. I wonder why they replace the control panel and the GPS sensor.

says on ticket, the control panel was damaged?? i don't know if it was physical damage or internal. there was not any physical damage when i shipped it, may have been damaged in shipment to them. as for the GPS, i was having real alignment problems with the scope(hope this fixes it).

well i checked out the scope last night. alas the collimation problem is still there. its excatly the same as when i shipped it to Meade, no better no worst. only problem the view seems to be not as good as before??? looks like they did solve the alignment problem i was having. i wonder if Meade would take this scope back and issue a refund, i have had it 6 months???? i would not want to sell it knowing of the collimation problem, so looks like i'm stuck with it. o well whats 3600 dollars(LOL). next time it will be a refractor for sure(no collimation worries)LOL. hope the rest of you made out better than me.

I'm still struggling to get a night that is clear here. Every nite I drag the scope out to cool it seems that the marine layer rolls in before I can feel comfortable that the scope has cooled enough to do a critical collimation check!

Sorry to hear about your experience coop. I have a sinking feeling...

The scope is back in my hands after sitting in locked storage at my wife's workplace..

The report says that the PCB was faulty so they replaced it and the handset.

None of Dr. Clay's work was undone (they wrote that opn the report) other than they gave me a new handset so I will need to load Clay's stuff from the CDROM he supplied.

We just moved house so I can't tell you when first light will be but of course I will post when it happens.

A big (tentative) thumbs up to Meade for a quick turnaround and answering my request that they let me know if any of Clay's work was undone.

The LX200 does not have any info in the handset (autostar 2) you are thinking the LX90/ETX/LXD55 autostar where the handbox is everything. The LX200's memory is inside the scope base.

Do you mean the objects, the tracking checksums or the periodic error correction?

Everything. All the memory chips are inside the drive base on autostar II scopes, and inside the hand controller on autostar 497 scopes (ETX, LXD55/75, LX90,etc).

You can take your upgraded autostar 497 and put it in your friend's ETX for example, but taking an "updated Autostar-II" and plugging it into another scope would have no effect.

Moggi, If Dr Clay supercharged your scope, he probably custom tuned the drive training, removed backlash etc... which might be wiped out every time you update the firmware on your *scope*

Kim, might be good to keep the LX200R topic in mind. Feel free to start a thread on anything you have a question about. You will get a more focused audience that way.

I opened another topic here on some LX200R findings from last night. See the postings on a possible fix or improvement for OTAs that have the collimation manifestation.

Oops sorry, I am just too tempted to know everything. When I was studying about information technology when I was 12, the information was so widely given in magazines. However, astronomy is just opposite of it. I have to dig the information myself. Maybe my way is wrong. May I be allowed to be off topic for once more? What are the books to read for more information about telescope and the related stuffs? Franky speaking, I am more interested in the instruments rather than the astronomy. Is it better for you to reply through private message to prevent to mess this thread again?

It is just the screen and keypad to utilise the memory in the LX200R. I get it.

Hello Mike. I haven't seen a realtionship between serial numbers and the problem. The "working" one I have has an erlier serial number than the "broke" one.

It's pretty easy to determine if this manifestation is present.

Focus the telescope. Then rotate the focus knob counter-clockwise a couple turns. you will see the central obstruction shadow. If it is centered then rotate the focus clockwise through focus and continue until the central obstruction shadow is about the same size as when you started moving clockwise. If the central shadow is not in the same location as on the other side of focus and is significantly off center..... you got the anomoly. As you can tell, it's tough to know how to collimate a scope with this condition.

I got out with the scope last night.

I had trained it on a terrestrial object during the day and then did a two star alignment last night. Chose Capella and Vega for those who are interested.

Anyway; I sent it tracking a few things and it was pretty *Gosh, dang dibbity dag nabbit* near centre of the EP. Pretty good to say I only used the 26mm for the initial aligment when I would normally use the 10mm (highest mag. I have).

I got so caught up in running a huge number of different alignment tests that I forgot to check the collimation issue raised by Jerry. Next time I will.

So I can say that Meade have done what I asked and fixed the issue i sent it in for. I now have an operational scope and am once again a happy guy. I will be even happier if next weekends trip comes off; dark skies and the use of observatories.

Thanks to everyone here for their input and especially Jerry who should run for President! Go Jerry
