Jerry --
Try a radio link. We have to use VPN for work, and it's not compatible with the high latency of satellite systems, so we're forced to radio. But we get a pretty reliable 2 mb/s from it here in Ireland. (It is line-of-sight though. We're fortunate to be on top of a hill.)

Man Jeff. That sounds like an alternative. I have line of site to a possible location that is 3/4 mile away. Is there a link to equipment. Last time I checked on microwave it was much pounds.
Luke.... Glutton or magnet????? Or may be politely determined. It's an old trick I learned from my kids. You can get your way when the other party gets worn slap out and gives in. (Speaking of Meade, I haven't heard from them today. Email time.)

Jerry,
Google Motorola Canopy & see if will take you anywhere. It's a campus system, but it may provide you with other links or ideas.

Also Jerry,
If that near by source is a WIFI, there are people who make ant. & amps for longer range reception. Check with your local computer store or the web.

Thanks Jerry. I just got back from a washed out BFSP and the scope is still in the car but will check my s/n tomorrow as I am heading out straight away to Long Beach Island to a rainy beach house
No word from Meade I take it; I'll be back online Monday pm.

From what I understand, Meade's SN won't give you any idea of a production timeline.

Folks, just finished a long conversation with Scott Roberts, VP at Meade. They could not find the problem in the production run last week. However, they feel the work we have done here has identified something in the early production run. They feel it may be a mirror problem or most likely something with the baffle tube. They are sending me another one that has been examined by them and will pick up mine for careful analysis in the lab.
Scott says they stand behind their products 100% and asked for anyone that has this problem/manifestation to notify their support people. He said if anyone with this problem felt better going through me here on CN for the notification process to ask them to PM me and I would contact Scott directly for you. This would give it priority treatment. I'll be glad to do that because, again, from the results of testing my 10' RCX last year and what I've seen on the LX200R the optics are a technological improvement.
So things are looking good.
This will be posted in the other related thread to make sure others that are affected become aware.

Well done Jerry and a big hand for Scott Roberts too.
Now I just need a clear night to see if my scope has the same problem before I send it back for the drive to be fixed!!
Fingers crossed on the new scope for you Jerry.

My SN is 102406, so less than 500 scopes earlier than yours.
I have contacted Scott directly to plead my rather unique case. I am hoping he can come through for me and help me. I live in the UK but imported the scope directly from the states.

Well, after monitoring your discussions for a very long time, I have decided I am ready to jump in and ask my questions. I hope I am in the right forum. If not, feel free to point me in the right direction.
I currently have an 8" dob that I have been using for about 8 years. Never really had the $$ to move to anything bigger/better but that has changed and I am ready to move up.
Naturally, my initial research got me interested in the 10" LX200R. However, after following your posts, I am not suer that is the right move. Is now a good time to make a move on the LX200R?
Also another forum suggested buying the mount seperately and only getting the OTA from Meade. Is this a good move? Also my budget is about $3500 + tax. Is this enought to get into the 10"?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Ken and welcome to CN.
I am told the latest production runs are fine. I won't know if the one I have due to arrive tomorrow is fine until I mount it up and test it. If you would give me until say Saturday night to complete at least a bench test I can say for certain on this particular OTA.
For the money mentioned some of the folks here with Atlas mounts and Advanced CG-5s might want to chime in. The CGE or G11 would bust the budget so it will have to be in the slightly smaller mount area. They are very good mounts though. I bought the Celestron C-11 on the Advanced CG-5 for a little over 2,000 and it is a good visual setup. You could buy that system, use it till you are perfectly comfortable with the LX200R 10" prospects and sell the C-11 for about the cost of the LX200R 10".

Don't forget to look at the Orion 11" Atlas. It's an Orion badged C11 on an Atlas goto mount... The Atlas is good for about 40lbs, I don't know how much the Meade OTA weighs, but I'd bet you'd be close to the limit, if not over.

A list of the Cloudy Nights members with LX200R 10" collimation symptoms was sent to Scott Roberts at Meade a short time ago. Scott will be contacting them individually. There are not that many OTAs affected (a good thing). There were only 3 owners with the problem that PM'd me. With the two posting earlier from the UK and one from down under, Morris and Chris (Steddyman) that would make 8 OTAs plus mine. (Morris isn't sure if he has the exposure so possibly 7 plus mine).
I really appreciate the effort Meade is putting out on this. It is an obscure problem many new users may notice but not understand the implications of. Meade is taking a sincere effort to diagnos and correct any and all problems with their equipment. That's the old Meade I started doing business with in 1992. (Scott, I know you and the folks at Meade are reading this. You still need to get some time shaved off that phone line when on hold for support and have a dedicated "high end" scope representative for RCX/LXxx. The EMail support is a great new alternative.)

Thanks again Jerry for your help with my LX200R. I'm very much looking forward to hearing from Scott and finally getting this resolved so I can get out and see what this OTA can really do on long exposures. I've had two LX200s now and still have a LXD55 5" achro, so I'm a Meade fan and hope to be for many years.

Jerry, I certainly have one that has the issue. I was going to fight the battle to get it replaced/repaired myself so as not to bother you with the issue. If, however, you think going through you is going to yield a better result overall for everyone then I certainly will. Your call on that.
