obviousley nobody does own it now, but what i want to know is what will happen when people start building bases on it. Will say the USA for example, tax these bases and own the bits of land that people from their have collonised? Will there be wars on the moon with lasers?

Hmmm, not sure. What I do know, however, is that if there are wars on the moon, then, yes, they will be fought with lasers!!

It's hard to say who will end up owning it, but if the idea interests you you should read Robert Heinlein's "The Man Who Sold the Moon".

Under international treaty, nobody owns the Moon. The problem is the treaty only names countries not companies. However companies building on the Moon would be accountable to the country that they are from. More then likely that would be determined by where they are headquartered.

The Moon has a treaty too...

I think that land on the Moon will be managed in same way as Antarctica.

At that point in time, the Moon will perhaps be owned by the same entity who, at that time, may own the Earth. Time will tell.

Current treaties essentially treat the moon the same as Anartica. How long that will last is anybodys guess. Territory usually belongs to the ape with the biggest club...

There wil be an international holding company established to manage all lunar commercial and support contracts; this company will at some point decide that it is accountable to NO nation, and will then subdivide the moon for its own profit.

Interesting point... I don't know. I just posted the links that I had found. I also recalled hearing a planetary society webcast and it brought up the problems with companies developing the Moon and not takeing care of the lunar "environmental" damage they could cause.
