Final image of Jupiter this year. new
      #1098805 - 08/17/06 02:35 AM Attachment (48 downloads)

I wanted to try one more time. This would have been better if the air was cleaner. The sky was clear and steady but a thick haze was all around and it was very humid. I had a 40 minute window before Jupiter sank into the muck.

This is a stacked image of about 200 images taken with the C9.25 and the Toucam pro/SPC900NC.

The conditions were so terrible, that I really had to be careful not to overprocess. If I did, I had the Onion effect all over it. But otherwise, not as bad as I figured.

Bring on Saturn, Uranus and Neptune!

Trever, thats a very good image for the conditions!
The amateurs of the Southern hemisphere still have some time for captures, but in the Northern hemisphere it is nearly over.

I wish I could get an image scale that large using just a 2x. With my XT10 I typically resize 2x just to get a more pleasent size.

Nice try, considering the conditions.

I was playing around with future planetary and ecliptic positions in Starry Night Backyard, and it looks like in the northern hemisphere we won't have any really good opportunities for Jupiter until 2010. But at least Saturn and Mars will be directly overhead for a few years.

An excellent image Trever. Don't say goodbye to Jupiter, it's hard but not again impossible.
Your image let me know that if we'll have just one day again of right seeing we'll obtain the last great image before the conjuntion.

Cheers, Antonello

Well when I said goodbye, I was mainly referring to the weather and the angle in the sky. If it were to be clear every night, I probably could have a few weeks at the most. But since it is usually hazy and couldy on and off every day here this time of year, I figured I wouldnt get too many more chances.

Hey Trever,

That's a pretty good image. Even if I had the time to image Jupiter right now, the sky here is filled with wildfire smoke, so I don't think its worth trying.

Justin,
The haze and humity here is as bad as smoke I feel. Byt the time the weather clears enough, it will probably be too late.

Chris,
Let me know if you had any luck, Chris.

Well that was a complete waste of time!

Oh well, maybe I will still get one more chance before its gone. If not, Saturn is coming around soon!

Too bad. But not surprising. I have also taken the same attitude and am now just waiting for Saturn.

I am also in the process of selling the extra equipment I have, scope and ep's, and also upgrading my current ep collection. I bought some Burgess/TMB planetary ep's, and a 21mm Stratus. I will probable buy 2 more to round out the collection but I am undecided on Televue Plossl's or a couple of more Stratus ep's.

Trever, is the SPC900NC a "true" usb2 camera? I'm looking to replace my faulty replacement NexImage with something else, but the DMK's are just ( WAY! ) out of my price range. Have you noticed a difference in quality of frames between say, 5-10 frames/second and 30 frames/second? With the NexImage, and original Toucam 740/840's there was a lot of compression starting at 15fps and up, so 30fps was out of the question for anything resembling higher detail.
Rephrased, how many images per second do you record at?

Chris, I use a 5x Powermate, and get a great image size with my XT10, but before I got it, I stacked a 2x Orion Shorty Plus barlow, and a 3x generic I got cheap off the internet(which effectively gave me 6x) and Jupiter plus 254mm of aperture gave me enough light to image the planet at 1/10 sec. shutter speed... it's just real hard to get it alligned.

Hey Wade,

I do not have a "true" SPC900NC. I have a Toucam pro flashed to a SPC900NC. It pretty much is the same camera so i am told, but i did the cheap thing. Using the new YUY2 compression, I do notice better resolution and color in my images. I usually record a 5fps or 10fps if conditions allow. I get clearer images using that speed than say 15fps or higher. I never record at anything higher than 10fps.

Chris may know better if it is a true usb2 camera as he has the actual camera.

Wade,
My biggest problem at the moment is tracking. I hae a 3x apo barlow ( plus the Orion Shorty Plus I just got ) but anything over 2x is difficult to manually track and get enough frames to work with. I am in the process of selling a car right now. Once it is sold I am investing in an EQ platform, so tracking is not an issue anymore and I will be able to up the image scale.
