Vixen 80 BT Vs Oberwerk BT 80 new
      #1125701 - 09/01/06 02:00 AM

I have narrowed down my choices to one of these two binoscopes. Pros and cons of each? I have read reviews of both but still undecided.

I do not know about the specific binoculars, but BigBinoculars.Com has a very good rep for service if you have problems later.

I could be wrong but I thought the Vixen were discontinued.

One thing I would do when considering buying a BT, is work out in detail which eyepieces I was going to buy, and what that would give in magnification, field of view, exit pupil. The Vixen have longer FL so there's a significant difference there.

agreed

the Vixen is about f/11. the Oberwerk is about f/6. Vast difference.

Low power in the Vixen without field stop vignette is about 28-29x. So the largest exit pupil you could get inthe Vixen without vignette is less than 3mm. In thee BT80, it's closer to 15-16x and 5mm.

The Vixens aren't multicoated either. But they are relatively light and compact and they sell for less than $400 here in Japan!

cheers,

i have had both mod. the vixen uses built in barlow lens in front of the 45 degree angle to get the focal length oberwerk uses fully multcoated optics and you can get lower power, the vixens had vignetting on lower power and wide field eyepiece and the oberwerks did not have any vignetting. i liked the oberwerks much better and they have sharper optics, much better prism assembly and easy to collimate. regards john
