I just got my copy in the mail and I am very happy with it.

Nice looking atlas that looks very functional in the field.

I wish I had it last week when there was a break in the clouds and haze.

Clear dark skies...

We'll be interested in having your impressions of it added to this thread.

Which brings up a question: in the intro, they say it's the seventh major atlas S&T has put out. Here's how I make it:

1) Becvar Atlas of the Heavens
2) Becvar Atlas Borealis, Eclipticalis, Australis
3) Tirion SA2000
4) Tirion SA2000 2nd ed.
5) Millinneum Star Atlas
6) ---?
7) Pocket Sky Atlas

Did I count wrong, or did I miss one, or...?

I'm quoting myself here, but does anyone know what the seventh Sky Pub atlas is?

Hi Rick,

The only possibility I can come up with for the "missing" atlas is the AAVSO Variable Star Atlas issued spiralbound by Sky and Telescope in 1990?

I saw a reference on the web too to a three-dimensional star atlas that George Lovi (who used write the "Rambling through the skies" column") had input to.

Speaking of which, it's a shame Lovi's essay on historic star atlases that was in the first edition of Uranometria was dropped from the second edition.

atb,

John

Hi John,

I have the AAVSO atlas, dated 1990, but mine is in a 3-ring binder, not spiral bound, and it doesn't say Sky Pub anywhere in it. Was there another version of it? It would seem strange for Sky to take credit for it if all they did was distribute it.
I guess I need to email S&T and ask them what they meant. I'll do it and post their reply for all interested.

Rick,

Is #1 on your list the same as the Skalnate Pleso Atlas of the Heavens by A. Becvar?

Hi Rick,

I came across a mention of it last night for sale on Amazon when surfing late. The Amazon site had Sky and Telescope listed as the publisher so I was assuming they had printed it. Many thanks for checking out with them about it.

Tom,
Yes, I believe they're the same atlas.

John,
Maybe there's two. Sky Pub marketed the one I have for a long time (but it doesn't seem to be on their web site anymore).
I received a very prompt (less than an hour!) email reply from Roger Sinnott. He said:
"...I think this is how I counted them:

(1) Becvar Atlas of the Heavens
(2) Becvar Atlas Borealis
(3) Becvar Atlas Eclipticalis
(4) Becvar Atlas Australis
(5) Tirion SA2000
(6) Millinnium Star Atlas
(7) Pocket Sky Atlas"

So I guess there was no mystery after all. Except I'd make it eight instead of seven, since the SA2000 2nd ed. is so much different than the first.

Many thanks Rick for contacting Sky and Telescope about that. As you said, it looks like the count has gone a little out of kilter based on what Roger said. It's rather like what version of one of the annual star parties we're on here in Ireland. The host club says this year's is the 21st but the rest of us say it's the 20th! That said, the road sign from the nearest town to my home village reads 7 miles but going in the opposite direction it's only 5 miles! So it's not just an Irish thing then

all the best,

John
