Help needed in choosing between a few models new
      #1208413 - 10/20/06 02:51 PM

Hi,

I have read and re-read many reviews on this site and others on many different models of binoculars. I already own a telescope and have enjoyed many many nights outside.

However, I would like a pair of binoculars for viewing when time is a little more limited.

I don't really want to spend more than $150. For sure, I understand that you get what you pay for, but it seems to me that there are some reasonably good binoculars around my budget.

In particular I have been looking at:

Oberwerk 10x50 WA
Pentax 10x50 PCF WA
Orion 10x50 Ultraview

From the reviews I have read, it would seem that the Pentax or the Oberwerk would be the better choice, especially since , for example, the Pentax model has a smaller but more usable field of view.

Beyond this I am at a loss at to which model would make the better choice.

I would be interested to hear any opinions from those more knowledgeable than myself or those that own one of these models.

Thanks

James,

I usually prefer binos with wider FOV even if I have to put up with a little distortion at the edge. For ME a bino with 6.5 deg FOV but sharp in the center 75%( 5 deg)and slight distortion beyond is more enjoyable to use compared to a bino with very good edge performance but only 50 deg APFOV. The Ultra view looks nice and is price right. But also consider:

1. I feel a waterproof bino is desireable if I am going to use it for nautre observation as well as astronomy. I don't think the UltraView is waterproof.

2. Extra long eyereilf of 22 mm is good for somone who wears thick glasses to observe. Could be TOO long for those who do not.

Binocular selection is subjective. Friend Brock with XXL hands prefers Porro Prisms, I like compact roof prisms. It's hard to say which is best for YOU. Oberwerk and Orion both have excellent customer service and return policy so I would not hesitate to buy from either vendor. You may want to pick up the phone and chat with Kevin at BigBinoculars for his input. I also have had very good experience buying from EagleOptics.com.

The Ultraview has neither 22mm eye relief nor 6.5°fov, regardless of what the stats tell you. Even with the eyeguards all the way down, some of the field is cut off for my eyeglass. Generally I can see the entire field of view with 15-16mm, so usable eye relief of the Ultraview must be about 14mm or less. With 22mm of eye relief, I can't even put my eye glasses up against the binocular.

The Tfov is 6.1°. It is good out to about 60-65%. It is rather poor out beyond 70%.

The Pentax PCF WP II is not the same as the PCF WP. General reports we have seen seem to indicate the PCF WP II does not stand up the same as the previous model.
