Emiiel...

101103 looks astigmatic, look at the cross hatching and lack of clarity in the image, compared to the other one (blue), that is not a "gold objective or rust" problem, that is astigmatism.. exactly what I was seeing with my old PST, and now gone totally with the new one (though still to batter it at F40 next summer!)

Send it back to your dealer..

It's a misalignment in the prism sadly and whilst you may be able to adjust it yourself, I personally would not risk it

Sorry, but it looks like rust to me...

So, bad news...

I'll try to contact Coronado and Meade Europe, and I'll let you now

The worst new is that I have not any garancy or any original box, ecause I bought it used.
I checked it in the shop and it looked nice, and the view seemed good.

I noticed the rust only looking from a certain angle from the side

Heee Nick and others,
just wrote Meade Germany a mail about the astigmatism problem. Let you guys know, when I recieved some answers and what to do...it's 4 months after the warranty limit, so I don't know if it will cost me money to get the problem fixed. Added the images above too, so they can see it for themselves...

@ Claudio: You just can sent it back, no need of original box or warranty is necessary...the rust problem is caused by the factory, so Meade is repearing them for free...You only pay for sending it to them. Just contact them before you sent it: info@meade.de Good luck, and let me know, when you hear from them!

Well, that will be interesting to hear the reply. I was lucky enough to have two Cak and two H-Alpha scopes last summer side by side, supposedly identical. One pair would not reach focus at F20-F40, the other pair would, and the difference was noticeable. The artefacts were astigmatism, as others on this forum have also seen (sadly), but in my case, I was lucky enough to have it fixed in the case of the H-A as part of an overhaul on the rust problem, and the CaK is now in Irvine, being fixed for the astigmatism, which is also proven via a direct A/B comparison with a perfect working model.

Hi,

Just found this thread; what a resource! I am calling Meade on Monday as the objective on my PST is now completely rust colored when viewed from a 45 degree angle. The serial number of my scope is 96264. Please add it to the list.

Thanks!

When I called about my PST's rust problem yesterday, Meade told me to expect about one month turnaround time.

I know, four weeks is a long time! Especially because I will have some time off over the holidays and could have been doing some daytime observing.

Oh well, looks like I'll be doing my observing at night with the 18" for the next month or so.

Hi Stephen,

If I were you, I wouldn't send your PST anywhere. Not all PSTs are created equal, and from your many posts it sounds like you've got a good one. I can't remember my PST s/n right now, but I know it's 964xx and shows no sign of rust. Apparantly the supplier returned all their PST stock to Coronado (Tuscon) for objective replacement when the rust issue was first raised. MY PST came with old (Tuscon) address details for the warranty, together with an additional piece of paper with the 'new' address for Coronado/Meade in CA.

I'm aware of the bandwidth specs, but my PST appears to have a narrower b/w than my SM40 filter. Reading the posts and from other sources, there certainly seems to have been a lot more variability in the final PST b/w than in the case of the SM40 filters / Maxscope 40's / SolarMax 40's. I just hope mine stays in good health.

andy

Cuda,

I just sent mine via USPS. I did insure it and paid for delivery confirmation. The rep at Meade made no reference as to how the PST was to be shipped to them.

Hope that helps!
