IF I were you, i would wait until after NEAF, see the Lunt reviews (or ideally first hand), and then make the call.
If the Lunt scopes are as good as the hype, don;t have rust issues (which I guess they won't), don't have asigmatic optics (which i guess they won't), and deliver 0.75A (which they say they will), then it's a no brainer..

I don't think we can see granulation with the PST...I can see the orange peel carpet, but never granulation...

Thanks for the sound advice. I will be attending NEAF. I didn't realize that Lunt would be there.

I have a reparied PST and I love it. The resale value on the PST has been pretty good so if you want to sell it later it should not be hard to get $450 for it. They don't stay on Astromart very long.

That's right, Stephen. Granulation is a photosphere term. But I believe granulation is broadly being used to describe that orange peel effect/dark mottles against the chromospheric network that we can see in the chromosphere in h-alpha.

Ben, Colin is right about the PST's. They're a great value for the money and Meade is fixing the problem that came with the product when they bought it.
Lunt is something to keep your eye on though. It'll be interesting to see the results once these scopes are actually produced and on the market. I hope they have several actual scopes to for everyone to try out at NEAF this year.

Hi Erika: Lunt says they definitely will have the scopes at NEAF. I see in my latest issue of Sky & Tel that they "are taking orders for April delivery"!!! If you go on to the European site that sounds wildly optimistic. I am really looking forward to the Lunt reports from NEAF. Time will tell. Keith

Hi Stephen: About the granulation, David Knisely sorted me out on that one and provided enough information to fill your average telephone book. The man is an absolute gold mine of information. He feels that a 6" white light filter will show granulation, although I must admit that I have never seen it [that I know of] through my F 11.7 6" newt at left. But the sunspots look really terrific. Come to think of it, I have not noticed granulation through my 10" dob either. I'll have to pay far more attention next time. Trouble is, since I got the PST I haven't looked at the sun with the newts. Keith

This explains to -MY- satisfaction his scope's superb health. The question there (to which we'll prolly never have an answer) is why does it have a gold objective instead of the sick blue? It might be that the original owner had it fixed (which Dan says didn't happen) or it might have been an experiment at the factory with the new objective supplier.
Fernando: Yes, it's the rust. No doubt about it. Meade has been -VERY- responsible about fixing them, so get it in the mail immediately. I'm sure that sunspots will return someday soon... I hope..... Rich

Any idea what the current turn-around time is for a Meade repair of a PST? Sent mine around Feb. 1st, wondering when I should start to be concerned.

Hello friends,
here is my first posting:
My PST I bought 2004 in Germany with a specialist dealer. The objective "rusted" slowly. 2007 were repaired free of charge it by MEADE (EUROPA). Now it is more wieser as new. The new objective is very transparent, so that I can see into the telescope inside.
96722 sick, repaired now blue/transparent -Arno Hesse Germany
Many greetings from Germany.

Arno, do you have any more examples of your PST latest images, as the old ones on your website also show astigmatism. I guess Meade Europe fixed that with your rust problem?

Astroarno,
Welcome to Cloudy Nights! I recently had my rusty PST repaired - sent it to Meade in December and got it back in February. I'm very pleased with the improvement.
Now that you have joined Cloudy Nights, please tell us how your solar observations in Germany are going.
