Steve: It starts with an orange colored area on the objective. BTW, what's your serial #? I don't see you on the list! Here's a photo of MBZ's objective (I'm in a hurry and can't take the time now to hunt down the original post, sorry mods!) for reference. It starts with a few specks and progresses to downright opacity! Rich

Hi Richard,
Guess you had a nice time in MAINE! Most of what you experienced is why I live here! (and more).
I've tried to get through but LOOOOOONG periods of hold time. Need a stretch where I can hold on for awhile and wait to talk to a real person.
Thanks for the info, Richard. very helpful.

Stephen:
Now I see ya! I had your handle in there as darkstar 528, but I was doing a search for darkstar528 (with no space) and couldn't find it!
I did have a good time in Maine, I even swam at the beach in Acadia Park!
Brrrrr!
It was.... um.... envigorating! Yeah, that's it!
Even the wife and kids got envigorated!

I used to swim every summer at York Beach in august, and I swear the water was like 60 degrees. Blue lips after 5 minutes! You notice only the kids are in that icy water. BRR!
But on the original topic of this thread, I was blisfully unaware of this PST issue, and I've owned a PST since March of '06. Now I can't wait to check the front element and see if I have the same problem! Mine was definitely made pre-Meade ownership of the Coronado line of scopes. Gee, thanks, guys (and gals) for getting me all paranoid!

My rusty PST (Serial No. 96603) was returned to Coronado through the local dealer in March this year for warranty repair and has just returned. I had been told Coronado had unfortunately lost all their original staff team when acquired by Meade last year and to show my understanding I insisted on my local dealer not to chase up Coronado and just let them take their time (thus it has taken 6 months). I also gladly paid for the transportation charges. My PST is now working normally. It would appear my repaired PST has a lot of new parts fitted in it as the front achromatic lens with cell can now be screwed off completely and the filter has been placed at the back.

Hey Daniel! Yours and Emiel's are a source of confusion for me. You have surely noticed that your serial number is not typical of a gold lens scope. I just wonder how it came to have a gold lens...
Mine is gold too, no problems with any of them (though I'm not sure we could even see the dreaded rust if it occurred inside a gold lens, it'd be invisible) at least no problems that we know of... Rich

Emiel: Here's a small piece of the list: -------------------------- 97148 sick - Bill Leslie "bill-in-forres" Scotland. Replaced by BC&F (Meade). 97449 not sick yet, blue - Steve Durham in NY 97468 sick - Bruce Raemsch "Carpe Noctum" in Cal., returned, lost by Meade, replaced.

Repaired with new blue objective, new ERF/BF/Spacer. 98131 not sick, blue/transparent - Gustavo Phols in Mexico (already repaired?) 98569 sick - Joplin Motisher. Repaired with clear blue objective & ITF tested. 98670 sick & gold (yellow?) "Davo" in Scotland --------------------------------------- There's your scope and Daniel's scope, with gold objectives, sitting in a sea of sick blue scopes! (If they just say "sick" they have the old blue coatings.) I think they must have experimented with gold objectives for a couple days and switched back to the original coatings after the experiment was over. That's the only answer to why you have gold coatings that I can think of, unless somebody at Meade switched the objectives before shipping the scope out...
BTW, here's a new modification that'll appear in the next full list: 98994 sick - Steve Riegel "molniyabeer" in Italia, repaired, blue objective now. Rich

Hello Richard, my old pst with golden coating is two times repared by Meade Germany...the put another golden objective on the oldie...it had after that very lack of detail, visually and with a webcam. Lots of tubecurrent too! after the 3rd time of repair, they gave me an new one with the blue lens. I've heard that Meade made a thousand or so with a golden coating...they were to expensive to make, so they changed it back to the blue "ITO"-lens. Just bought myself a next PST...with an older serienumber...I will have it over a week or so...just another to fill the list. It should have the orange or the gold coloured coating. greetz emiel greetz emiel

Add me to your list. Serial number 94343. The rust has happened to mine twice. The first time was back in 2005. It was repaired by Coronado. I just noticed it again today. I just posted in another thread. I keep my pst out in my pool room that is indoors. This is a high humidity room and I never have a problem with the scope. Sometimes i nthe mornings after the cover on the pool has been off for swimming, and the cieling fans and dehumidifier have been on, I get the dew on all the windows... thats typically not a good thing to do, but I keep things covered and for the most part.. moisture free out there. I am pushing the envelope of this scope.... if moisture IS the culprit of the problem.
I look at it EVERY day to see if it is getting sick, no luck so far!

Daniel: "I look at it EVERY day to see if it is getting sick, no luck so far!" You probably mean "lots of luck so far!"
So now the odd appearance of gold objectives in the middle of a long run of blue (and mostly sick) objectives is partially solved, Emiel had his "repaired" by Meade Germany. It sounds like it wasn't a good repair and they did the correct thing by replacing the scope altogether.
So Daniel, did yours get repaired also? Your scope is the only other gold objective scope in "the blue zone"... It's possible that you had your old scope replaced by a new gold one and I've got the old scopes serial number stuck onto your new scopes objective somehow... Stranger things have happened.
How would you compare the gold objective with the old blue one? Did you notice a lack of contrast like Emiel did? I have a gold scope as well and haven't had much (OK, any) experience looking through other PSTs for comparison. I wonder what (if anything) I'm missing... Other than sunspots, that is! Rich
