10" LX-90 GPS versus CPC 11 new
      #1249788 - 11/13/06 11:57 AM

I’m considering stepping up from an Orion XT8i dob to an SCT; maybe a 9.25”, 10” or 11”. I’m in the process of comparing Meade’s and Celestron’s offerings so I was curious to read Ph6Guy’s thread asking for advice regarding the 12” LX200R versus CPC11. Unfortunately, my budget tops out at the CPC 11 or 10“ LX-90 GPS limit; I don’t have an additional $2k to spend on a 12” LX200. I understand this section of the forum is geared toward higher end Meades but I’m hoping you guys will give me some unbiased advice regarding these 2 models.

Thanks,
Greg

I briefly owned an 8" LX and have never owned a CPC in any size so my comment is based on the usual guidance:

aperture is everything!

There are quite a few people on here who can add more detail being as they owned and used the scopes you mentioned.

BTW: I went from an XT8i to an 8" LX to a 10" R and have enjoyed every one of them.

CPCs have a less delicate motoring system than LXs. If you move the dec motor of a cpc up or down without unlocking the dec lock, no damage will occur to the motor (I think it is the motor). If you do this with an LX, there is a possibility that there could be some problems. This is not a big deal, its just that you have to remember to unlock the dec and az locks before moving your LX manually. This is not as much a concern with a cpc. I chose an LX90 8" over a Celestron 8" because I was familiar with the autostar system and such with Meade telescopes already. But like Morris said, the more aperature the better (just don't get aperature fever, that could cost you thousands ).

Hope this helps and congrats on getting a new scope!

Thanks for everyone’s feedback. Pending capital expenditure approval from the finance director (aka wife) I’m going to purchase the CPC1100 GPS XLT.
