For the very first time ever, tonight, on TV, the show 'Vanished', the hero was using some binoculars to spy on the bad guys, the camera showed the view through the binoculars. There were the bad guys, in the middle, surrounded, not by a sideways 'eight' blackout, but a perfect circle!! Finally! or do you think Joe lunchbucket will think the hero is using a telescope and get all confused?

What I'm referring to here is the common Hollywood practice of showing a binocular view as two side by side circles, overlapping in the middle, kind of like a sideways 8.As an avid binocular land & sky viewer, this has always annoyed me. In this show last night, they showed the view correctly as a single circle. This , I think, is the first time I'd ever seen this. 'Joe Lunchbucket' or 'Joe Briefcase' is just my term for the average, non binocular fan viewer!

Oh I understood your point alright...the hourglass bino views on the tube & movies are pretty famous true enough! My post was just a knock at the often overlooked class prejudices re; intelligence such monikers evoke is all. I always wondered why a mythical character was never invented by the media to represent white collar ineptitude...
Anyway, glad to see Hollywood catching on to optical instrument realities! Maybe someday we'll see someone using an astronomical telescope in a non sci-fi movie?!

Or correctly? In the recently aired 'They Came From Outer Space' the local astronomer/author is out in the back yard with his girl with the funkiest looking focus setup you'd ever see on a refractor- it looked like TWO diagonals set up in a pattern so that the view ended up parallel to the original. No eyepiece apparently either. I guess this guru didn't need one, since he seemed to be looking ABOVE the OTA anyway. Dead reckoning?
I've noticed a number of protagonists in Sci Fi movies that didn't seem to know which end was up on astro equipment. Probably wouldn't fare any better on musical instruments.

I always wonder when the movies show someone using a telescope in an observatory, how they are able to see anything as they always have all the lights on!

I always found it wryly amusing that in the movie Contact, a young Jodie Foster is out on the front porch with her father watching a meteor shower through a 3 inch f/12 telescope.
Carl must be rolling over that one.....

During the Leonid storm of 2001, I had a 4" refractor set up, just in case there was a lull in the action. At one point when the meteors were falling like rain I decided to point the scope at a visible trail left by a bright Leonid. All I can say is, "Holy cow!"
Try it some time.

As a movie buff, I always go crazy when I see the binocular figure 8. Note: the figure 8 is also used in British movies (I guess it's universal).
People from my generation were dazzled by the amazing movie, "2001 A Space Odyssey". I actually saw it on opening night in 1968 on a giant cinemascope screen; a real wow experience.
Now the bad part. Next time you see "2001" check out the stars. In every space scene, space walk, etc. they twinkle excessively!
