I'm not sure how many of you visit the "Beginners Forum", so I thought I'd post a link to the thread I made there very early in the morning, after one of the most memorable nights of observing I've ever had. I hope you can feel the thrill my dad and I did, as you read what I wrote!

my WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!!! thread

Hi Cam,

I checked out the link you posted,
After reading it I can well understand, why you,and your Dad,were so excited.

I have seen a few Bolides, here in Australia, one of them so low,I thought it was going to hit the double story house next door,Certainly a very exciting event.

I have Never seen as many as you in one night though.

Regards.John

Cameron, I read that when you posted it, but didn't reply. I fully share your joy. One of my most memorable observing experiences was something similar I saw about 1982 or so. A bright orange bolide tracked across most of the sky at an unusually slow rate, then exploded and went down in glowing sparks. I was told this was likely the re-entry of some space debris. If you spend a lot of time under the stars when the major meteor showers are on display, eventually you'll see bolides as bright as the full Moon!

I saw somewhere you thought these were Leonids, but your description didn't fit. They have to be seen escaping in a direction away from Leo's head to be Leonids.

In 1998 the Leonids threw a display that had multiple bolides all night long, basically one every few minutes, sometimes more, sometimes several simultaneously. I'm crossing my fingers that tonight they will repreat that spectacle!

Hi all,

Didn't see a thing here in upstate New York. Locked in by clouds for the past several weeks.

However, about three or four years ago, a sporadic bolide crossed right over the house. It seemed close. However, it was the first time that I heard and audible whistle from one. Interesting. Thought I'd pass this along.

Best regards,
Dave.
