Sky and Telescope isn't too bad . I did prefer the format from the seventies and eighties. I especially preferred the older style star charts. Plain white on a blue background from then.
Astronomy on the other hand, After subscribing or newstand buying issues for the past 30 years since they started I've decided I just plain hate it. I still subscribe and probably always will but I hate the last several formats of the magazine. Magazines have always been perfect examples of change for changes sake. I don't know, I 'm old fashioned and definitely prefer to read someting in hard copy than on a monitor but I'm wondering if these magazine's aren't outliving there usefulness. The breaking news sections are always woefully out of date by time they are published and the equipment reviews are to be kind 'shallow.' The internet in general and perhaps even sites like this one may simply have rendered them irrelevant. I hope not, as I said I prefer a hard copy , it's easier to balance on my lap when using the head, and it won't break when you drop it. But I wonder if they aren't going towards the wrong niche to keep them relevant.

That's what made me worry a bit about S&T's announcement of format changes. One of my pet peeves is the use of "same product, great new look" marketing ploys to try and keep the attention of the consumer. Changes that lack substance and are put out there to just catch attention insult the intelligence of anyone paying attention. Astronomy, sad to say, seems to me guilty as charged. S&T, while it fixed some things I didn't think were 'broke' in the first place, also made some changes that really improved the content and readability.

I actually find the 'old news' in the hard copy an advantage. I've read it all before, online, but the quality of reporting in magazines still strikes me as being higher overall than what I get with online services. And the repetition means it's more likely to stick in my brain.
