V, if you send a PM to one of the Admins (red names), they might be able to work some magic and insert the 'c' into your login-name so it reads the way you'd intended.

Btw, is anyone clear?
Gruithuisen's Lunar City might be do-able tonight.

Eric great shots. I would love to be able to get the contrast in my photos you do. I know image forum. I also like that I can see the same features in your image and mine.
At least I am pointing in the right direction. I am trying to find Vallis Alpes in your photo and mine.

Thank you viking! I'm completely new at this afocal photography stuff, so I'm not sure how to help with the contrast. Right now all I'm doing pointing the camera into the eyepiece and firing off about a dozen shots and posting the best one here. Valles Alpes ought to be visible tonight, but last night it had not experienced sunrise yet.

Carol, my skies look partly cloudy at the moment, but I'll have a look for the city if I can find a hole or two in the clouds!

Eric
Now be careful fella. One by one we are all getting clouded out. Is there enough room in your yard and driveway for us all to decend on you to get a good look at Lunation 1038?Your busy with the galaxy sketches, your posting here the fabulous moon album are you overwhelmed yet? Take your vitamins and stop and eat something too.

No clouds here, Frank, but the air is pretty churned up. The last of them (the clouds, that is) were scuttling off toward the horizon as I set up my scope. The air was very clear, very cold, and more than a little windy...

Here's my best shot for Day 8.

P.S. My driveway (and yard) is quite small, so stake your claims early...

First I want to thank Carol L , you will notice that my sign in name has been corrected. I have uploaded another cropped picture from to nights viewing. I got out early due to clouds coming in. In the photo you can see Mons Piton in mare Imbrum. This mountain is 26x26M 15 miles by 15 miles. The hight is 2250M 16800 feet. And I can see it from my drive way.

Eric I notice while comparing images yours and mine that your views are further down on the moon. I a wondering if it might be because I am photographing before sun set?

Well, i was out for a couple of hours last night, first clear night with a Moon up since mid October, but had to cut it short as the temps in the teens were freezing my tushy off! Anyway, I was halfway through a nice detailed observing report for ya'll when my computer ate it. I'm too disgusted to write it over again. I'll just mention that the most unusual feature of the night that I saw was Birt E sitting atop it's sooty little dome. The prettiest was Plato with the spire-like rim peak shadows almost filling it's flat floor. Makes me wish I was an artist..(yet again!)

I'm guessing that most of the difference is caused by the 3 hour time difference between the east and west coast. Factor in that you're taking your photos before sunset, and I'm taking mine after sunset that will probably add another hour or so. By comparing your photos with mine will give you a feel for how far the sunrise terminator is progressing across the face of the Moon over the course of about 4 hours.

Here is the moon on Day 9 of this lunation. Very windy; horrible high-power seeing conditions prevailed and the cold weather (~40-degrees F - yes, I am a wimp) drove me back inside pretty quick. The images came out very well, but the bad seeing made itself known once I looked at them closely - hence the fuzzy insets.

Was it me, or was it my poor eyesight?
Anyway, tonight I couldn't even lift my scope
of of it's tripod, back problems.
Only thing I could do was getting the finderscope
and by hand try and see something.
I think I missed a big spectacular view of Sinus
Iridium, standing out in the dark, a bright ring
of fire in the dark also a long way out of the terminator.
Am I wrong? Did I see it correctly, please correct me
as I'm still trying to find my way around!
Anyway, for some time now I can't even get my scope out.
Think I stick to the screen for the moment
Soo few clear sky nights hear and this had to happen!
Good views and clear skies!

Lunation 1038: Day 8.24 November 28, 2006

Gambart B and C with domes

About 300 km southeast of mighty Copernicus, on the floor of Mare Insularum, sit two little twins; 11.5 km Gambart B and 12.2 km Gambart C, located about 20 km to the north. Thirty kilometers to the east of B is the tiny 4 km Gambart H. Strangely, it sits right in the center of a small hill or dome making me wonder whether it is a summit caldera. Adjacent to B towards the west is the diminutive craterlet, 6 km G. Above Gambart C to the northwest lies some distended, mesa-like topography. To the west of C lies an obvious, although somewhat rough textured 10 km diameter dome. To the west of this dome, was to my eyes, a lunar cinder cone. It appeared to be conical in shape, and its association with this area of past volcanic activity suggests this may be true. The evidence for an igneous past in this areas is everywhere; pyroclastic mantling is seen in broad dark blankets and spots amid the wrinkle ridges, ejecta debris fields, and bright crater rays radiating from Copernicus. On the terminator is Gambart, it's shallow floor was probably flooded with mare lavas in the Upper Imbrium and then later partially filled with ejecta from the Copernicus impact. A bow of light on the terminator, the outer walls are illuminated by the first rays of lunar morning.

Rich,
That was one splendid geology tour. Your sketch captures this stark landscape so well I can imagine I am seeing the surveyor 2 landing craft 20 km to the upper right of Gambart C (where it has rested for the last 40 years). You are a "lunar sketch artist extraordinaire" R. Handy.
Thank you for sharing these treasures with us.

Hi Mert, I hope your back gets better soon.

Yes, it was Sinus Iridum you saw through your finderscope. Well, not Sinus Iridum, actually.. it was Montes Jura hanging out over the limb into the darkness but yes, you had the correct area in mind.

Thanks Frank , I really appreciate your wonderful comments. I try my best to look for the lunar geology responsible for each region I sketch. I've been hanging around the Bin long enough to learn about some of these processes. I thank Mardi Clark for much of my understanding, Mardi!
