How small can you see? new
      #1264305 - 11/22/06 03:45 PM

I finally got around to getting the calibrated lunar crater sequence images I made up on the net.

Using these scopeside, you can easily & accurately determine 1) how good/bad your seeing is and 2) what your maximum resolution on the lunar surface is.

Here's the link: Crater sequence images

Mardi
This should be very useful on nights of good seeing. Thank you!

Gee thanks, Mardi.. now I'll be able to see just how lousy my skies really are.

All kidding aside, this is very generous of you.. thanks! It'll be interesting to compare data from session to session.

Hi Mardi! First, let me thank you personally and on the behalf of all of us lunies here! There must have been considerable work involved in measuring these features regardless of the scale of the map. These charts will be very useful to visual observers, imagers and/or sketchers. I've already made a desktop link on my imaging laptop to these files. Do you plan on extending your work to Imbrium and Oceanus Procellarum? Excellent work!

Thanks for the info. All this time I thought just my location seeing was bad, it looks like its typical. The website is great too.

Mardi,

Just wanted to jump on the bandwagon before it passed me by and express my thanks for all the work involved in the data collection and easy-to-use presentation of the crater sizes. It will be nice to quantify the seeing this way.

It's this kind of selfless contribution that makes CN so great.

I will give this a go with a sketch at the next opportunity, I suspect I will weep at the results though.

I like this. The Antoniadi scale has its uses, but for recording the effects of how seeing and equipment combine to influence resolution on a given night, it's something of a blunt instrument. This will allow those who wish to do so to provide a more precise measurement.

Thanks Mardi, great info... Since it's kinda crummy tonight, I've pulled up my old images and am using your info to determine the resolution of my captures... Fun stuff, more fun than using VMA!

Just an FYI...

A set of three of these charts are now available in laminated form for scopeside use from John Duchek of Duchek Consulting. I do not have any money interest in this so i thought i'd pass it along just so if anyone would like a laminated set you know where to go get them. The files for these will always be available on my website for free download for those who just want plain printed copies.
