Olympus Trooper DPS-R 10x50 C or 8x40 mm opinion
      #12695 - 10/02/03 08:33 PM

Hi ,

I am Mohit from India , am new. Most of the Bino's Discussed here or on Yahoo groups are sadly not available in my country.

What is avaialable at the moment is Olympus Trooper DPS-R 10x50 C or 8x40 mm . Though the optics look good , but are not BAK 4 or even FMC.

Another one available is 20X50 MM ZENITH Bino's.

From point of view of performance on DSO , I will be glad if some one can narrate something on performance of these two.

Thanks a Lot

Mohit

Mohit,

I once had a pair of the Olympus 8x40 and found them very good given their low price and presume that the 10x50 will be similarly good value. If I were you I would go for the 10x50 to get the extra aperture - a tripod and mount would also help your observing a lot.

I don't think the 20x50 would be my choice since the field of view will be too narrow.

I presume that their is a limited choice of binoculars in India due to import tariffs/foreign exchange etc. If not you might consider importing some of the Chinese 15x70's. India has produced some great astronomers and astrophysicists so the demand would probably be there - and you must get some great skies as well.

Hello Ian ,

Thanks for encouraging reply. One such Great Astronomer is Vishnu Reddy in states right now.

I have heard lot of discussions on Burgess/skymaster/Oberwerks/Apogee/Barksa & closed on Obie's as were given max ratings.

Sadly not able to get them in India due to limitation's yu said.

The ratings on Excelsis was not encouraging & looks like these have BK 7 Prisms as nowhere it is mentioned BAK4 & FMC.

They use the term anti reflective coatings & aspeherical lens.
They do show blue coatings though.

I look forward to others comments as well.

Thanks a lot once again.

Mohit

Mohit ,

Do NOT be discouraged by your apparant limitation of choice in availablity of binoculars .

We all talk a lot about this and that and the finer points of optics but at the end of the day ( literally !) it is the binoculars you use the MOST ( regardless of their quality ) that will give you the most pleasure .

Even these relatively inexpensive Olympus binoculars are not plastic TOYS -- they WILL do a job for you -- and a FAR better job than your naked eyes.

Too many people in this hobby tend to run before they can walk . Patience is a priceless trait when stargazing.

Marvel in the skies with whatever you can get your hands on.

Remember that many of the famous astronomers from ancient times had nothing much better to look through than what can be obtained for $100 US these days.

Life is not about getting what you want -it's about using what you have .

Enjoy your binoculars Mohit -- and keep in touch with the helpful people on this wonderful site.

Clear skies -- Kenny ( from the UK )

I am also from India. I only have a 5x40 (local made) and a 20x21 (samsung). Both are absolutely hopeless for night sky viewing. Lookin for a good astronomical binocular.
