L-bracket for tripod
      #1281439 - 12/02/06 11:27 PM

I have a basic pair of 10x50 Orion Scenix that I want to try mounting on a tripod to make it easier for my daughter to see objects. I'm wondering if the standard Orion L-bracket or similar models are compatible with the basic Sunpak camera tripod that my wife uses for photography. I looked at the tripod and it seems to only accept a hot shoe, but it's not clear whether the binocular bracket will attach to the hot shoe. Do I need a specialized binocular tripod?

Thanks,
Sean

Hi, Sean,

I hope I can help. Is this "hot shoe" you refer to really a "quick release plate" that attaches to the tripod head? Usually you attach the QR plate via a 1/4"-20 stud to the camera and then the plate/camera unit snaps into the tripod head.

The binocular L bracket would attach to the QR plate just like the camera. 1/4"-20 thread. Additional QR plates may be available if you're lucky.

Keep in mind that while most any L bracket fits porro prism binoculars, only the thin design like the Pentax will work with roof prism binoculars, if you plan to use a variety of bins with it.

The quality most important for a binocular tripod is being tall enough to hold the binocular in a comfortable position. Many tripods that work fine for a camera will be too short for binoculars! Also, the bigger your binoculars are the sturdier the tripod you will need.

Good luck,

Rich V

Great, thanks Rich. Yeah, hot shoe = quick release plate, exactly (hot shoe is just what my wife calls it). Appreciate the feedback on the tripod - this is really just for me and my 4-year old daughter, and the binocs are light, so I figure the camera tripod will do in a pinch. It'll just increase the odds that she will actually see what I'm pointing at.

Actually, I found an even cheaper L-bracket at http://stellarvue.com/observers%20aids.html - can't beat $5!
