This is just the sort of heavy duty Alt/Az mount I'be been looking for and is NOT commercially available...looks like a very smooth mount (just based on all the bearings alone).
Great job just wish something like it were available to buy.

Mike, Cris, Jeff,

Thanks for the positive comments. The mount is a prototype so no formal drawings exist, just a bunch of “back-of-the-envelope” sketches and parts lists. I’m actually currently working on a second version to fix a few bugs and make some improvements. For example, the clutches as they exist now, though reasonably smooth, are really more suited as shaft locks. I’m designing some large surface area disk clutches, as well as adding worm gears for slow motion and encoders for DCS’s.

I know what you mean about finding a heavy duty Alt-Az, which is why I used large diameter needle thrust and radial bearings throughout, as well as trying to keep all of the moment arms as short a possible. I don’t know exactly what the maximum useable load capacity of this mount would be, but there is absolutely no flexure or vibration detectable with my Tak FS-102, even in an extremely unbalanced configuration.

As for making something like this available in some kind of limited production in the future, who knows, I’ll just have to see how well the next one works…

Thanks again

Derek

Thanks Derek

If you need any formalized drawings let me know....I use solidworks for designing automated machines. I'd be glad to help in development as I would love to have an Alt az mount that heavy. Do you do your own machining? Again, great idea and nice workmanship.

Derek --

Instead of moving to disk clutches, have you tried your current design with Delrin instead of (what appears to be) brass?

Thanks Jeff,

That's a good idea - it would be worth experimenting with that a little.

hi folks,

I think I`ve got another interesting mount to add to this cool thread:

MOUNTEGRA
"she`s" a sigle arm fork mount, carries 50 kg easily, needs no counterweights and is superstable!
a real dream !

manufactured by
GEMINI
Andras Dan is a specialist in mount design nad this was his masterpiece!

MOUNTEGRA

the short horizontal arm is movable and therefore adjustabe in its bearing so that there is no need for any counterweights at all.
the long vertical arm can be altered in height also.

when I decided to pick a 9" TMB Apo designed as a folded refractor I sure wanted a fork mount for its comfortability!
I did no longer want to bounce around a german eq-mount and bump my head in the dark on the counterweightshaft...

wanna learn more about that mount?
I have written a short report - FYI:
REPORT and IMAGES

I hope You like it - I sure DOOO!

And here's my mount holding the 10" Schimdt-Newton and piggybacked 70mm refractor. Intes-Micro Alter D6 fitted with an AWR Go-To drive system. Built like a tank like all Russian made astro stuff. (and weighs like a tank too! )

I spent sometime doing a polar alignment last night. The problem is was 1 degree so I only got a ruff alignment. Its going to have to warm up a little before I can enjoy using it. I just dont work to good in the cold.

Here is a shot of my custom EQ6-Atlas \ G11 tripod mount.
The minimum height to the top of the saddle is 5 feet. With the legs extended and the pier extension (not shown), it moves the saddle height up to 7 feet.

This really helps when using the 105mm F15 Antares OTA.
