Water "spurt" crater and Harmakhis Vallis new
      #1293133 - 12/09/06 02:47 AM Attachment (59 downloads)

With all the hoopla on the possible flow of water on Mars in an un-named crater in Centauri Montes (on the rim of the Hellas impact basin), I decided to look it up and see if it was visible in the digital elevation map of the region I have for Vistapro. It turned out that I already had a shot of the area and the crater as well, so I downsized things a bit and here it is. What you are seeing is a view looking roughly west over the Hellas basin from a peak in the small cluster of mountains known as Hellas Montes on the northwestern rim Hellas. The outflow channel Harmakhis Vallis is at the top center near the horizon as it flows outward towards the lower floor of Hellas on the horizon, while the 10 km crater that Mars Global Surveyor spotted the possible flow mark in is at the right and labled. The small mountains around Harmakhis Vallis are Centauri Montes. Clear skies to you.

David,

A very interesting discovery over this obscure crater west of the Hellas basin. Thank you for bringing this crater down to Mars for us all.

Happy Holidays!

Carlos
